this is from 2003, i still get goosebumps when i watch this. this is one of those moments in my life that i could take you to the very spot i was when this happened. i remember it like it was yesterday.
Murph is a quality driver, there were a lot of quality drivers back then doing similar times. They broke the 2min and 8 sec barrier which was fast at that point in time, then comes Murphy with a time that was over a second faster was just crazy. Fun fact he thought he messed up the lap as he missed a gear (wanted 3rd but was in 1st) around the dipper, so this time would of been a little bit quicker had he not done that. But still this is rightly considered a lap of the gods and forever will be even though the time was bested 7yrs later by Lowndsey, this lap was 7yrs ahead of it's time..... incredible. Also flaming exhaust on gear changes is a hallmark of our V8 Supercars, glad you noticed it :)
I watched the Bathurst 1000 KM race from the age of 2, back then it was the Hardie Ferrodo 1000 and the cars were awesome, the XC Cobras sounded like thunder as they dropped down gears through the corners, flames shooting from the side pipes as you observed exiting in front of the rear tyres. Kevin Bartlett rolling the Channel #9 Camaro uphill was among the highlights of my youth and my father racing Dick Johnson
If you liked that, then I encourage you to check out a clip from Mark Larkham "This is Bathurst". Larkham is a former driver and now commenator of the Australian V8 Supercar series, and he goes into the Bathurst track in great detail.
That 2:06.85 was unbeaten until 2010 when the winner of that year’s race did 2:06.80
In 2014, after the track was resurfaced the lap times started dropping massively, as the fastest time that weekend was 2:05.60
That time was eclipsed in 2015 by 0.7 seconds (2:04.90)
Two years later in 2017, the fastest time became 2:03.83 and then in 2019 it became 2:03.48
Within a decade the lap record had been broken many times and was over three seconds faster in 2019 than in 2010
The current lap record of 2:03.37 was set in 2021 by the driver who won that year’s race

The Bathurst race track is a public road, because there are farms on the inside of the track. So in-between race's it's possible to drive around the track, although you are restricted to 60kmh. The view from the top is spectacular, hence the name, Mt. Panorama. It's a bucket list thing I ticked off two years ago.
Bathurst is the world of racing. Up hill, down hill, complete concentration required. 1,000 km, 161 laps. Sorts out the men from the boys.
Even his opposition were applauding him.
Murphy won the race on four occasions (1996, 1999, 2003 and 2004)
At this race (2003) he was fastest in four of the seven sessions and he and his co-driver led a combined 120 of the 161 laps during the race

I don't think that's true at all, everybody was stoked at Murph's lap, except maybe a lot of Ford fans.
If you ever get the chance to drive the Mount Panorama circuit in your own family car and you wonder how these guys get around so fast, it's tighter than it looks.

He's a 34 times world trials champion he's never been beaten in 17 years of competition. Two championships a year indoor and outdoor. Trials is like golf the person with the lowest score wins you score points by putting you're foot down or 5 points for failing the section. There's a UA-cam video called OUTDOOR FREE RIDE TONI BOU that showcases Toni's skill on a motorbike and it'll blow your mind he's like a ballerina but on a motorbike
