Thank you for posting this. My wife is Filipina. We have been married for 35 years I have paid for lots of land and have built a huge house there. It was mostly my idea and I did it to support my wife's parents who have since passed. I love going there and staying there, but I always feel left out. It is always clear to me that I don't really belong. Her Mom and Dad clearly didn't like me and never made an effort to make me feel at home, even though I paid for every thing. I never wanted a pat on the back, but at least a little bit of thanks or appreciation would have been welcome.

That's the toxic mentality of the Filipino. They feel that you are obligated to look after them because you're a "rich" foreigner who married their child. Their daughter is their gift to you and you should pay them back.

My filipina wife is an RN and makes good money, (so do i) Her parents are doing well on their own, her dad is retired military and gets a pension of sorts, not once has my wife asked me send money to assist parents/siblings, she just recently purchased a newly built condo in manila and she will rent it out to vacationers/tourists on the months we won't be there. i know a few guys who are married to a filipina and she is always buying stuff and shipping things back home to her siblings. Most filipinas do not have marketable skills such as an RN or a degree in some type of trade so they are self sufficient, otherwise you WILL be on the hook for their needs. choose wisely

If you get with a woman from a peasant family (I wouldn't) then at least make sure the family is somewhat cultured and follows key tenets of Catholicism such as gratitude. Start small with a meal, and see if there is any reciprocation. Don't be scared to drop the trash.

Hi guys. It’s a nice variety of tips to be aware off. However, I personally still find Filipino people to be friendly and loving. Although, one cultural thing may perhaps needed adjustment. It’s the emotional ingrained with guilty conscious for the kids to support parents financially as an obligation; specially from daughters. All others, parents cultivates superior lessons for their siblings. That’s why finding the right Filipina to be a wife can be the golden price.

I’m not in the Philippines full time, but I’m here for many months of the year and your points are so true. My asawa tells me all the marites. She’s told about it from family and other trusted friends, but there is a lot of (way more than I thought) crab mentality, even from people who are nice to my face. If you don’t or can’t share your blessings, get ready for the chismis to start and since there’s usually nothing for them to say about us, it’s always based on lies. As a foreigner I want to get angry and confront them to their face, but I keep quiet and laugh instead (at least then I won’t be blacklisted 😂). With the hate from those that are jealous, it sadly is unavoidable. I totally agree with all your other points too. I really had to learn to relax and keep quiet here 🎉😂. I love this country and there’s some amazing people here (my wife is the best!), but OMG.. sometimes it can be soooo frustrating 😇🤣

Love the video! I think there’s another Pinoy mentality from my experience that non-Filipinos don’t appreciate which you can add to the list. It’s the inconsideration of speaking your language in front of groups who can’t understand it. It just creates disharmony within the group or team instead of unity. I have experiences these in the offices , get togethers with friends or in companies I worked for where there’s a lot of Filipinos . In growing up in Canada, my parents always taught me and my brother that if we are with our Filipino friends and there are non- Filipinos in the group, to talk a language that everyone can understand out of respect and consideration for those people. I remember one time, I had a get together in my house with co-workers.
. Close to the end of the evening, there were 4 of my co-workers left. They happen to come from the same region in the Philippines. Instead of speaking either English or Tagalog, they spoke their dialect. It was the most uncomfortable feeling I ever had. They were all enjoying the food I made and having a fun conversation. They were in a their own world. However, I felt left out like an outsider and felt disrespected. I now know how my non-Filipino friends and co-workers felt in the offices or get togethers when there’ are group of Filipinos. After, this situation, I never invited these guys again. I made sure that the people I invited have the Multi Cultural Mentality so, everyone can have fun and does not feel left out. My father always tells me and my brother, to be a proud Filipino and show to the world how considerate Filipinos are. In doing so, other nationalities would like to know our culture more and gain more respect for Filipinos.

Unfortunately, we can't control how others interpret our actions, but we can control how we respond to their opinions. I just recently experienced the crab mentality we have here. Apparently, if you help someone here, they say it's for the clout, and if you don't help anyone they say you're being greedy. But let's stay focused on our intentions and what we believe is right. You are wrong. In most parts of the world, it is shameful to ask for money. My Filipino wife's family continuously asks for money. I helped my sister buy groceries a few times when she was in need. There is a reason there are so many Filipino nurses and engineers because their parents want them to support them in their old age.

@@travellolo No you're wrong - People ask for money all over the World - I seen people asking for money in every country I have visited - Including here in the USA - Filipino families can ask for money, but ultimately it is your "Choice" to say "No" - Same is true for helping your "Sister," you and you alone decided, to help her out in time of need - You could have said "No", but your kind heart decided otherwise - No deference here in the USA, some family members are always asking to borrow money - And the real "Shamelessness" only takes place when they don't pay you back, and this is true all over the World !

@BenzJaguar My sister asked me twice to help her buy groceries when she was low on money. I helped one of my Mexican cousins, one time when he was in a car accident. But about 30 Filipinos have asked me for money, family members, friends, and neighbors. Mostly for stupid things.

This is the first time i have hated about the Philippines being hated...Quite the opposite, like all places there are nuances and customs that may seem very strange if you come from a Western nation and the time factor...People are not used to lack of rushing around, even though that is something cherished before coming there and partaking in the life and lifestyle. The only ones i have ever hear voice hatred is those that are criminals and those that are perverts and those that their visas and visits cannot be extended. Most people, even there are envious to seeing those with more...And are no different in looks nor intelligence or connections, having many avenues in life that they do not...That is really the only negative i can see there, but it happens in all countries and cultures. Good video i hope it helps someone to see why this goes on.....Peace

There are definite cultural differences and mindsets within the family's compared to the 'western' or US experiences. That was quite a list. Some of those behaviors must be 'human nature' because I experienced them 60 years ago growing up in the US. Toxic - describes it very well. - - - You two are wise - very astute - and discerning these issues quite accurately through obvious observations and interactions of life. This warning will be appreciated by some and others may simply ignore it ? Not all expats are 'wise' either ! --- Your sincerity is appreciated and may GOD bless you both.

I've never heard anyone express hate about the Philippines or Filipinos. I've met a handful of Filipino immigrants here in the states, and they seemed like decent people. My impression is that there are a lot of nice people there, but also a lot of desperate poverty. I've never been there, but would like to see it someday.

I always let my Asawa go first weather it's getting a taxi, buying things at the store, or buying street food or just buying anything. I'll be around the corner and when she closes the deal, I swoop in. Also, when my asawa was young, some of her other relatives would look down on her and her family and wouldn't talk or help them because they lived in the slums. Even the ones here in the states. But now that she's here, and we renovated the house in the Philippines, everyone wants to talk to her and the family. Hmmmmm

Cracked me up when Esme bit her lip after imitating the "local" accent.. So, let us think about confidence in a shy person to speak out in any situation. Shy people will have to muster up the courage to speak at that moment. They will think in their mind that they have to say anything with great confidence/arrogance. I find this to be true in any culture BTW. We can understand now why it is said with great confidence, even if it is wrong. They are shy... I often tell people that I am not listening to what a person says. I am most interested/curious on what they do NOT say. Of course you listen to them talk..... right? You will find more value in my approach to conversations... I ask questions of what I do not understand....These things force out what they are NOT saying.... right?

I spent a month in Tacloban and was treated like a king like you said. I had young store clerks ask if they could take a picture with me and constantly giggled. I obliged. I also experienced seeing people take a leak in the ocean with hundreds of people around. The driving was off the rail. Good video.

This is a Universial behavior, Crab Mentality is not something new. As a Filipino, the only toxic and negativity in the Philippines is the human CCTV, an example is Filipinos like to gossip and don't mind their own business, Give and take should be the mentality! In the U.S. some people also don't follow the laws, like road rage, Asians or other minorities in the U.S. or Western World also face racism, don't assume White foreigners are superior over a Filipino, they think foreigners are affluent, that is a stereotype not all foreigners are rich or smart! there's the Good, the Bad, the poor and the Ugly all over the World. I hope you research the Word "Karen" and Google it! Racism is real. The worse is this new trend Black Passport bros searching for a Filipina Girlfriend or a relationship, You don't know their background and should check them before the Philippines allow them to the Country..

When people comment that the bad traits that you mention are all over the world, that way of thinking is wrong. I am of Mexican descent who married a Filipina. Only once in my lifetime has a relative asked for money. An uncle asked for money when my cousin was in a car accident. All cousins pitched in and paid the medical bills. I have been asked by many of my wife's family members for money. Also, my stepson is in nursing school, and all Filipinos know why. Very good blog, keep up the good work.
