I was in Vietnam this year in Feb/March. They do convert CAD. I am from Canada. I had my CAD converted at three different places in Nha Trang and also Da Nang. I did find one location that did not convert CAD, but there certainly are many locations that do. Secondly, converting your CAD to USD before you go you will lose money on that transaction before you even leave Canada. Getting Dong in Canada is also very expensive. My conversions in Vietnam from CAD to Dong were almost at the world base exchange rate which can't be beat. Gold shops give better rates than exchange booths where it appears you tried to exchange your CAD. Thirdly, you don't need a phone number for Grab. Make sure you have Grab on your phone and activated before you get there. When I arrived in Nha Trang, I got my sim card at the airport. Within seconds I was hailing a Grab without any hassle or setup that required a phone number. I used Grab daily for the next 20 days. Cheers!
Hello Megan, I want to give you a tip: You can change Canadian dollar to Vietnamese dong at any gold jewelry store in VN because they need them. There is no service fees and you are getting the money at market price. There is no limit in amount either. I found that is the best way to do. I always do that when I go to VN. Also, not all banks in VN accept Canadian money but some do.
Thanks Megan! Good points about the cell phone calling issues and atm credit card problems. Another thing to mention to most people from America is to make sure your phone is unlocked prior to traveling. Everyone else in the world buys their phone already unlocked but in America many companies subsidize a locked phone then make up more money than the phone is worth through their outrageously priced postpaid plans

Hi Megan. New to your channel. Great vids! So useful but a bit overwhelming to process as I’m just now considering going to Vietnam. You mentioned Chiang Mai as well. Thoughts about a first time Asia traveler considering Da Nang, Chiang Mai, and Bali?

Excellent! Thanks! "Breaking Bad" is the best series ever! Check out the first season of "Babylon Berlin", but choose original German with subtitles. An amazing cinematic achievement. Seasons 2 & 3 not quite as strong. Also, "Giri/Haji" is a very interesting British/Japanese series. I also like "Better Call Saul" from the makers of Breaking Bad. Ozark is really good as well.

You should not do your currency exchange at the bank. They either not equipped or not allowed or both to do that. You should have gone to a jewelry shop to exchange your currency. Hello: I'm a new subscriber and really enjoy your video's. I'm a mature, female solo traveller and expect to spend 10 days in Bangkok (in February 2021) and then 3 days in Hanoi followed by 2 1/2 weeks in Da Nang, Vietnam. A full 30 day vacation that I've been planning for over a year. Had to cancel my vaca this year due to the virus. My ideal vaca is going to the beach, eating great but inexpensive food and spectacular ethnic shopping, especially clothes and jewellery. Would you kindly give me some suggestions? From your video's, it sounds like the food in Vietnam is not really great. I'm seriously allergic to mosquito bites so a visit to Chang Mai is out of the question. Many thanks to you for taking the time to read this. Peace!
Actually I did with no problems at a mall location. And the rate seems competitive. Check out Contential Exchange if you can find one in your location.
Is it true that beginning July 2, visa laws will change in Vietnam, foreigners will be required to leave and re-enter every 30 days instead of the customary 90 days? Meaning, on a 90 day visa, a foreigner will be required to leave and re enter 3 separate occasions.
Vietnam's new visa policy only says it will provide evisa to 80 countries. They do not mention limiting the number of days you can stay. That means you can stay for 90 days, then leave the country and come back for a new 90 days evisa (If you want). www.onlinevisa.com/news/vietnam-evisas-post-coronavirus/ vietnaminsider.vn/vietnam-to-grant-e-visa-to-the-citizens-of-80-countries-from-july-1st/
I went to Vietnam in 2016 with the letter of approval for upon arrival visa. I applied for 30 days visa and paid $25 online, soon after landing and as I was waiting for my passport to get stamp. The security officer told me to pay $137 for a 1 year visa and I was told because of the new law.
I did a Vietnam trip twice via the online VOA for 30 days. Fee around 25$ USD. No issues at the airport. My trips was in 2019. Likely the process since 2016 has matured. The key to use the proper govt VOA web site. There are many non-govt sites that can give problems when you arrive
@Tuan Thai I was very tired from a long flight and they held on to my passport for hours. My family was waiting for me outside the airport, I didn't want to cause a scene. I felt like more people need to know about this since the airport security officer target vietnamese American . I noticed that non vietnamese got the passport stamped and go.
@@PortableProfessional It was my first time travel alone to Vietnam. There were three men in dark green uniform behind a glass and they held on to my passport for more than two hours. I was in shock of the additional $137 USD fee for 1 year. I hope everyone be aware of this trap.
I watched video's on medical care / hospitals in Da Nang Vietnam was very helpful , I also checked www.flightradar24.com I only see 1 flight going from Hanoi Vietnam to Singapore . Travel site said travel is permitted within Singapore , however there are check points at borders as well as within Singapore due to Covid-19 Pandemic one site says international flights are banned from leaving Vietnam .
Vietnam also offer Dual Citizenship & 1 year long visa multiple entries every 90 days you do a visa run you can also apply for ( PRC ) permanent resident card says it takes 6 months to process ( PRC ) cards.
I wanted to know, should you get the sim card for your phone prior to going through immigration, assuming they would need a working phone #. Also, after you get your sim card and new phone #, couldn't you go online and update your financial accounts prior to using your credit cards at the local atm's.
I am planning on visiting VN for the first time and according to Mehgan you would need to get a VN phone # so your google maps, and Grab app would work. Also, a working phone # in case your credit cards get frozen at the ATM's.
I forgot to answer your immigration question. I assumed you should get the sim card with a current phone # that immigration would need. So should I get the sim before or after immigration.
Can i also add, make sure the $25 US cash is new money and in $20 and a $5 note. Make sure its not dirty, no writing newer the better. It can be scary at the visa check in when the women tells you to go away and hands you back your dirty cash. I'm not sure what you would do if you couldn't produced any newer notes. Lucky for one of my golf mates i actually had $50 US in cash (i'm not American [Aussie]) but it would be my English born heritage to "prepare for the worst", I also gave $5US to another traveller as her $5US was rejected. But in the end it was ok. Thanks for the Video and anyone going to Vietnam re watch the video. And have a ball. If your a Golfer please go to Ba Na Hills it's a must, Montgomery Links had the best Caddies and Laguna Land co the ones we had (6 off) were really bad. Enjoy its awesome. Recommend the Bamboo 2 Bar its great just watching the scooter's go by having a super cheap beer, later at night they ask what music video you want on the screen. I want to go back!
You are expert on everything Vietnam. If you are short on money, ask your parents to send you money via Western Union. Only problem is WU skim some money off the top in addition for fees.
Singapore Travel Sight says there are border check points in Singapore due to Covid-19 , while one site says Vietnam banned international flights from leaving Vietnam . I checked on www.flightradar24.com it's Friday in Vietnam I only see one flight flying from Hanoi to Singapore ( SIA ) Singapore Airlines no flights at all departing Danang for Singapore or China ect... I also see Sheraton Grand in Da Nang Vietnam fully furnished villas & condos can be rented at this Sheraton Grand right on Da Nang Ocean Front with Western Style breakfast / foods ect... I also found you can have your driver license translated into Vietnamese and then take it to the Da Nang Driver Bureau to apply for driver rights while in Da Nang . I'll continue my Da Nang research and I'm still watching Megan's Tips for any thing or any tips I missed. Thank You Megan You Have Sparked A Research Lightening Bug in Me.
I am a bit confused. You said "a couple of dollars for VPN". However your recommended VPN wants 8+ USD per month. Did you make a mistake or did VPN raised their rates since you signed up?
Hey Richard! There rates have changed since I signed up for a long term plan (it’s been a while!😅). This is still a really competitive option: 15 month option @$6.67/month & includes 3 months free. Also 30 day money-back guarantee. Another one I have used and liked was NordVPN- I’m working with them now to see if I can get a discount code for viewers. They have a great rep and great deals. I don't think my parents would be on board with this one, I'm self-funded 😅
VPN does not work on netflix anymore
Where else in vietnam have you been to?
How Hanoing when you don’t have data... also maps.me is the best app.
Good luck!
@@PortableProfessional thanks for clearing this up. Yes. It a bit completive now. 2 dollars a month would had been a steal of the year. I will be checking closer to a future trip. Just no idea when with the current situation.
You look very similar to someone working at the London oil and gas corporation named Anna 🤓
Haha can't say I have heard that one before!

US dollar is King. People will always be happy to take US dollar more than local currency.
Seems to be the case!
