I think this song is under played, under rated and just amazing! It's always been my favorite song and I play it (and all ABBA) in my car all the time. :-) Great review!!!
🧡 ABBA! The Name of the Game is pure ABBA! Discussing the vocals as harmonizing to create the effect of a third female backup singer: The sheer talent that was ABBA at this time is eventually what led them to end their quartet on top. As much as their fans wanted them to come back they refused because they didn't feel they could compete with their younger selves. Well, if it's true that there is a reunion in the works, I have to give credit to us fans for finally wearing them down. People mature, and their sound MAY be different, but unless they are God-awful (never) they will be welcomed back with open arms by their original fans and a whole lot of new ones, like yourself.
One of the most complex songs ever. Starts in the middle of a chorus and works backwords from there. Even listen to the base -it sounds like it's being played backwords too. Simply pure genius.
It took a while for music critics to finally admit that ABBA records were extremely well written and produced and truly had musical merit because of their complexities. It wasn't formula driven like so much other popular music. Before then it was unfashionable to admit to like or love ABBA music. The two men are great writers and the two women are great singers.
You are spor on with your comment of the 2 girls'' voices. When they sing together it is referred to as the "3rd voice" (not including Benny and Bjorn of course). I don't think there are any 2 other voices that are so harmonious together. I enjoyed your reaction to this, one of the most underplayed and underrated ABBA songs.
I heard this as a kid in the 70s This is a really roundabout songs with lyrics in rounds mixed ? This is a super catchiest song! The song rolled in my head for four days after watching it too much. Sweet lovey lyrics too!! “The Name of the Game” totally blows me away. Trumpets too. A royal and intricate ABBA song!! I want this in my next wedding absolutely
Yes I noticed the singing and it sounding like more singers, like you said. Thanks for doing this I like your input and I’m glad you recognize a really good song when you hear one
DERECK, you react (facial expression, emotional) and afterwards you analyze (words, rational). Both moments are fantastic, but reacting to an ABBA song is always a fantastic experiecence. This song is a masterpiece. Simple chords, but, wow, what a fantastic bass line and beat, and horns (or similar) in the chorus...IMO the lyrics are about a girl with a fails-based love history, and now she asks someone if the "game" is serious or not, before taking a chance on him. Greets from Brasil.
The boys join in during the chorus which creates that unusual ‘third voice’. It’s a very complex song, almost seems like 3 different songs merged in one. By listening more to it, you’ll realize it’s truly one of their greatest masterpieces. Such a shame it’s a little underrated compared to their biggest hits. Awesome reaction mate, keep going with these ABBA reactions! Also, your poll says ‘Under Attack audio only’ though they had indeed filmed a music video for this one! Check it out :)
Great reaction, Abba's reputation just continues to grow, I think in a couple of decades they will be spoken in the same breath as The Beatles. Everyone is slowly catching up to just how special they were.
Bjorn once said that when the girls sung in unison, it sounds almost like a synthesizer. They also recorded most of the intruments and vocals twice, at slightly different pitches, then mixed them together. Back when musicians experimented in the studio. Today it's a drop down menu effect called "chorus"
The Name Of The Game and Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight) are the only songs sampled with ABBA's consent (Hung Up by Madonna and Rumble In the Jungle by The Fugees)
One of my big ABBA favorites. Agnetha and Frida both have their solo parts in this song but their voices also blend in an extraordinary way. May I suggest another ABBA track for you: As Good As New from their 1979 Voulez-Vous album, ua-cam.com/video/w3UMf20i5Ig/v-deo.html. So much energy in that track and that guitar riff, wow! I think you're gonna love it. Another suggestion is I Feel Love (studio version) by Donna Summer: ua-cam.com/video/Nm-ISatLDG0/v-deo.html. Amazing and very influential record!
I love this song because of how catchy it is, How Frida and Agnetha’s vocals are in it and because I really relate to the song besides the “I have no friends, no one to see.”
This band toured the scene the same time Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin did, and they sold as many albums if not more than either of those two monster acts…Respect
As an abba fan this is one of my favorites.... Lyrically. This and the winner takes it all and chiquitita are so well done. To think that they wrote lyrics in their second language. Which American artist can write so well in French or Spanish or... Lots of respect. And to do it with perfection match to music... I am sorry that we have not heard any new a bad songs for 30+ years but thankful for what they produced in 8 years or so. Pure genius
I got "ABBA gold" when it came out, and being 8 I thought this one was boring... haha. Plus that version was shorted by one couplet (the one after the first chorus). Now I really appreciate the sound of this, the vocals and Frida's singing.
The Name Of The Game is my favourite No.1 ABBA track ever. For me at least its the lyrics that win through big time; everyone of us can relate to the lyrics, an awkward teenager having a major crush on someone desperately trying to convey how they feel to that person without being hurt, we've all been thereLol and the lyrics just unnervingly encapsulate all of that superbly. The vocal harmonies also are just exceptional. In UK throughout the mid to late 70s, ABBA had two sets of hat trick No.1 hits: Mama Mia, Fernando, Dancing Queen, (broken by Money Money Money making No.3) then Knowing Me Knowing You, The Name Of The Game, Take A Chance On Me. In 1980, ABBA looked set for a third set of No.1s with The Winner Takes It All, Super Trouper but the follow up Lay All Your Love On Me only made No.7 summer81 UK chart.
I really enjoyed your reaction! Your facial expressions and hands say it all. You're very observant too, I like that. ABBA is always a joy to listen too, quality as always.
I Love you spotted the third ABBA voice. Two incredible ranges blending. The song is about love but it's her talking it out in therapy apparently. At one time it was going to be part of the musical The Girl With The Golden Hair with both women playing different sides to the same 'star' who is driven insane by fame.
This was another smash for them. They were also "Pioneers" in the sense they were one the first Groups to do Mini Films now known as Music Videos. In sweden they were Royalty in the sense that they were on the Swedish Charts from 1974-1982. Ace Of Base (All That She Wants) was compared to them, and Mattman & Robin are next to Xenomania (England) the hottest Producing Teams in Europe.
Wow, I’m really getting old. I was a huge fan back in the day. I bought my first LP (vinyl) of them about 35 years ago. So nice that you as a young guys react to this. 💕🤘
hi from France... Great moments to watch your reaction... I'd like to know what you thing about the song "put in your white sombrero". This song is (it's my meaning) a great demonstration of the vocal quality of Frida...
Funny, when I see Frida in the brush among the trees, I think of my cat when he's trying to be just outta reach of me. He likes to play "catch me!" Aaargh!!!! That little tyke! Love it when Benny sees Frida, kisses her and takes her into his arms!! 💕🧡💖
Thank you for sharing your reaction 🌷🌷🌷🌷It came out 1977 and I always thought it was one of the songs that had a more 'American" touch, even their English pronounciation sounds more American😉 I love this song❤ Agnetha was working as a dashboard girl at a car dealership when she was 16 years old living in Jönköping and touring with a dance band. One of her idols growing up was Connie Francis. Agnetha's solo debut came when the was 17 years old with this song (English subtitles): ua-cam.com/video/ksO-ky97lrw/v-deo.html

You should react Me and I or Our last summer. Frida is lead vocal in those. There are live or audio version. Also Angel eyes("Angeleyes") is good harmony song by both girls lead vocals.
Love this song and video,a very happy video, the happy vibes in this, the song, the lyrics, the vocals, all about this song and video...you seldom see these kind of happy vibe videos nowdays..and you never see the quality of this again..
Thank you for reacting to this! By the way in the whole video the women don't look at each other not even once! Because after all the song is about love and relationships! Definitely my most favourite. For another abba reaction song.. maybe Money, money, money?
Derek, Have you ever considered doing reactions to Eurovision? Eurovision is the long running song contest (since 1956!) that ABBA won in 1974 and which helped propel our Swedish Fab Four to stardom. There is just a whole wealth and world of material you could work with involving Eurovision songs.
dude, setting aside that they are fkn HOTTIES, I can't believe nobody has copied the quaddrouple track on the "What's the name of the game" That is what made their vocals so amazing. If you listen to them just singing together, it is different than the "what's the name of the game". That is the ABBA hook. I have loved them for ever and can't believe nobody has picked up on this.
" (working titles: "Yippee Yay", "Big John", "Joanne", "Love for Me Is Love Forever") is a waltz song recorded by the Swedish music group ABBA for their 1977 release, . The lead vocals were performed by Björn Ulvaeus in the spoken first verse and by Agnetha Fältskog in the second and third verses. The Spanish version of "Move On", "Al Andar" (or "El Andar"), was recorded in January 1980 for ABBA's Spanish language album
When making that video, ABBA had to consider the fact that Agnetha was pregnant at that time. Therefore the idea of sitting by the table and playing a board game came in very handy.
A masterclass in song writing, dynamics, production, vocal harmony and instrumentation.
Abba tracks are works of art, masterpieces.
Fridas Smile ❤
It’s beautifully constructed, isn’t it
ABBA , all their songs, have been a joy in my life.
It's passing so many modes. From full choir to acapella with only a bass drum.
The ABBA magic at work!
I wasn't an ABBA fan at the time. But how many later did I realize what awesome songs they did.
The Name Of The Game is one of Abba's tracks that you like on first hearing and soon it becomes near your favourite after repeated listenings.
I think this song is under played, under rated and just amazing! It's always been my favorite song and I play it (and all ABBA) in my car all the time. :-) Great review!!!
Underrated?? Number 1 in UK chart during 4 weeks... 😍😍
One of my favourite Abba songs.
🧡 ABBA!
The Name of the Game is pure ABBA!

FRIDA!❤️
One of the most complex songs ever. Starts in the middle of a chorus and works backwords from there. Even listen to the base -it sounds like it's being played backwords too. Simply pure genius.
I can even pick up some Beatles influence on this one. Also love the additional guitar work in the second chorus.
@andy mcdonald very complex vocals,,,,, from low to high,,,,, amazing range of octaves those 2 girls had. Especially Agnetha.
It took a while for music critics to finally admit that ABBA records were extremely well written and produced and truly had musical merit because of their complexities. It wasn't formula driven like so much other popular music. Before then it was unfashionable to admit to like or love ABBA music. The two men are great writers and the two women are great singers.
@@gustaaf1892 I think their massive record sales were evidence in and of themselves to ABBA's overall music genius,,,,✨⭐🎼
@@AzoreanZionist record sale isn't a mark of genius. Look at what's selling good today.
My favourite ABBA song, so gloriously, unspeakably beautiful.
Agnetha /Frida = The Dynamic Duo !
Björn and Benny wrote and composed most of the songs
Yes dude this is the right kind of music🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥✌🏻✌🏻
This needs a throwback, mainstream music for gays nowadays is too shallow.
This is such a mature and well-crafted song. It's so confident.
I like your smile while you're watching ABBA videos! ;-) Greetings from Germany!
I agree! Always makes my day!
Greetings from Switzerland!

One of their very best songs
This is a masterpiece. Very complex.
Structure is amazing
Hugely complex and effortless at the same time. Blew my mind the first time I realised that the first verse is overlaid on the final chorus.

Another brilliant timeless classic! You should also try That's me!
@Marco De Brabander and they have a great video for "That's Me"
"Maybe had something to do with love," you said. Yes it is. The lyrics give it away.
Such timeless music ABBA has given us. It’s pure perfection through and through. You’ve chosen the right group to react to. 🔥🔥

Brilliant song
Interesting fact: A sample of this song was used in by the Fugees for the song Rumble in the Jungle
Released in 1997
ABBAs best song in my opinion
Well said well bloody said for real
That’s a great song possibly their best song. Again killer refrain on all their songs the chorus its fantastic.
This is one of my favorites. A really well-constructed song. This was their heyday.
