It sums up at least this version of the character. Even though he’s a bastard who will kill people to get his own way, he funny enough does some good things on the show and actually tries to help Baldrick learn to count and even likes him unlike his other relatives.
I love how she slaps Percy and we're not given a reason but just expected to understand. EDIT: I'm talking about the slap at 0:22 where Blackadder is not even in the room and she slaps him without any context
I am wearing a cardinal's hat because I'm Cardinal Chunder. I have an ostrich feather up my bottom because Mr Ostrich put it there to keep in the little pixies.
Can you explain what he meant by great booze up Edmond? Give me a minute. Yes, great Boo is a missionary who's recently returned from Africa where he was burning Catholics and has been in a coma, and it appears he's just woke up. Well done Edmond. So you've taken a vow of silence, how interesting. Tell me about it. 😂
What is the story with the crosses on their shoulders and heads? Is that actually authentic to the period, or is it a parody of how the "pious" would dress?
Not authentic, but it's not out of character either as there were a lot of strange Christian sects all over the whole of europe. Most were wiped out by the Catholic Church during the first centuries of Christianity, but others persisted. New ones popped up, in this case the characters are protestant but they go to the extremes.
Yeah it's just a pisstake. They were protestant anglicans (A denomination of Christianity), which was a reformation in England initiated by King Henry VIII who wanted to break free from Catholic Rome in order he could be free to marry Ann Boleyn.
If they had distilleries, then they would have been able to get it just as strong as anything you can buy today. Sanitation issues would make spoiled batches more likely, and no mass production means the range of quality is much wider, but distilling should give you whatever strength you want. Without distilling, I'd guess they probably could get ale in the 10-15% abv range.
"I am a complicated person, you see auntie. Sometimes i'm nice, and sometimes i'm nasty..."
Best Rowan Atkinson, i mean Blackadder, quote ever
I agreed
he's not getting his share now after having too much ale

I love how Percy looks behind him when lord whiteadder mentions the jester. Lol as if to say which jester lol
Never noticed Percy mouthing about the 'little pixies', he's seen him bladdered before lol
My god, i've watched this over and over since i was a child and NEVER once noticed that lol!
I love how she slaps Percy and we're not given a reason but just expected to understand.

You'd understand if you'd seen the rest of the episode. She likes to slap Edmund every time he says something offensive to puritans.
It's because she couldn't reach Blackadder.
She raises her right hand first, wanting to slap Edmund but he was out of reach. So slapping Percy was the next best thing.
WICKED CHILD!
It's because it's Percy
How dare you speak to my husband like that!
‘See the little goblin’
‘See his little feet’
‘And his little nosey wose’
‘Isn’t the goblin sweet?’
"Yes!"
YES!
I am wearing a cardinal's hat because I'm Cardinal Chunder. I have an ostrich feather up my bottom because Mr Ostrich put it there to keep in the little pixies.
Well done
That joke is a lot funnier if you know what chundering is.
And I'm grinning inanely because I think I've just about succeeded in conning you and your daft husband out of a whopping great inheritance. Eeee! 😁
Drunk in 42 seconds. What are they drinking, absinthe?
He can't hold his ale you see :)
Homebrew I bet 😏

" Explain yourself"?
Most difficult questions to answer. Only a drunk can answer it, perfectly.
Percy the devil farts in my face once more lol
Not mentioning farts was also a condition.

Look I just wanted to say thanks for a splendid evening...🤣👍
"Has anyone ever told you you're a giggling imbecile?"
"Oh yes."
Good
I’m surprised he didn’t just point to Edmund.
I love their delivery. He's like, "yeah, don't worry, I'm well aware," and she sounds quite pleased to hear it.
Comedy gold
"Sometimes I'm nice... and sometimes I'm NASTY!"

''shove off,you old trout!'' perfect,lol.

exactly the same shape as a thingy! lol
Well, have you seen a turnip as thingy-shaped as THAT? I haven't!
I’m afraid it’s been taxed
Better than a thingy shaped like a turnip :D.
So this is where the line "Cardinal Chunder's holy water all down my shirt" comes from!
That means vomiting from being drunk doesn't it?
@@mushroomhead3619 sure did, used it all the time in the army
He broke his vow of silence.

Nice callback to Black Adder.
I just noticed one of the drunks is Hugh Laurie
Well he is an evil German master of disguise after all.
Yes, and another one of them is Stephen Fry.
OhMagnetz the guy playing the fat monk played Red 6 “Porkins” in A New Hope :)
So Blackadder, House, Porkins, and Oscar Wilde walk into a bar...
I think this was his first apperance.

Percy or Darling? That is the Question.
+maxcardun Percy, for being a fool but optimistic. Darling was more intelligent but was too cynical and bitter.

I actually wonder how strong booze was back then surely its not as refined as it is now
If they had distilleries, then they would have been able to get it just as strong as anything you can buy today. Sanitation issues would make spoiled batches more likely, and no mass production means the range of quality is much wider, but distilling should give you whatever strength you want.
Without distilling, I'd guess they probably could get ale in the 10-15% abv range.
There is also mead which was popular then and which is plenty strong.
Drinking water in those days was dangerous! Small beer was the order of the day. Fermenting kills bad bugs.
I’m guessing tolerances were lower then too
