Wow. My heart will always hold a special place for Bret. In-between the 1st and 3rd LOTR movies, when I was a huge fan of "Figwit" as we called him at the time, I was hit by a car in an accident, and he wrote me a "get well" letter. I have cherished that letter ever since, and I'm so proud of how far he has come since then! Great job on winning the Oscar's, Bret!!! ^_^
The funniest thing is, he really is telling the truth. I remember all those ghastly old shows. Plus I lived in Wellington for a year and a half, and I knew about 8 people who worked on the film, both on and off camera.
Jay Saccheri Wouldn't it be hilarious if someone actually broke the first zealand and it was a guy named steve.. and if he fled to australia and is hiding under a big rock right now.
It was actually called "A Dog's Show" and had two different competitions. The first with a single barking dog that drove sheep up a hill, as Brett described. The second had 2 silent dogs that had to get 6 sheep into a circle, split them and then pen 3 sheep with each of the 2 dogs. It was really dramatic and entertaining stuff. I much preferred the second half. I really don' think it was on at the same time as the Muppets as it was probably the second most popular show in NZ at the time.
***** it is true! Jemaine talked about it in a recent interview with Hollywood Reporter www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/flight-conchords-movie-being-written-816241
The dog show is not on anymore. It was more than just up the hill, that event is called a huntaway, and they go through a gate. Other events were to have a pen sometimes one pen, sometimes you have to 6 sheep, 2 dogs and the have to separate the sheep and put 3 in each pen. People laugh but remember and English friend who came here to work as a boilermaker in an oil refinery, he laughed the first time but became the biggest fan. The sheep can make it so frustrating. Anyway we , and I have probably grown out of it now. Don't know if I could watch it as anything but nostagia. New Zealand did only have 2 channels, no satellite TV when I grew up. We got 3rd TV chanel in 1989. At the time he did this show, 2012, NZ would have had 5 national TV chanels, not counting several local stations around the country. Of course with Sky TV we about 100+ chanels to choose from. I personally can't see any use in having any more than a dozen chanels.
Bret somehow refrained from mentioning that his two second snippet in lord of the rings started a huge internet sensation called FIGWIT He became an instant cult figure, there's even a documentary about it on youtube
"i'm from wellington where peter jackson makes the films so it's not that uncommon to be in them.." god that is so true! every few minutes of lotr i'm thinking oh i know them, i've met them several times before, etc lol
"I mean, you grew up in New Zealand, did you know about the muppets? Were the muppets on television, in New Zealand?" I swear, most Americans think anywhere outside of America is just dead space. It's New Zealand, not the bottomless abyss of the Serengeti.
Bret, you're beard is still good! Huge congrats for the win, you deserved it, way to represent NZ and Flight of the Conchords!! (the best band/show in the world!)
possibly - but conan is behind many of the best pop culture references of the early 90s... namely, the best years of the simpsons, and snl. his credits are legit
So true. I remember watching The Dog Show on TV on a Sunday evening with the sun getting in my eyes and eating mashed potato with 2 poached eggs on top. Oh and with butter. Flippin good show
He was FIGWIT?? I thought that character looked familiar, but without the beard and the fluffy hair... nope, never would have guessed. Good for him-hope he had fun! (That was great stuff in The Making of... when he was trying to remember his lines!)
As a kiwi, I enjoyed the Muppets. However, there was also a show similar called "Fraggle Rock" & that was my favorite ^_^ " dance your cares away, worries for another day..."
Yes,that's true. One of my cousins married a Kiwi guy. She told us there is only 2 supermarkets chains across N.Z. One of them called Pak N' Save or Push N' Shove as the locals calle it. Aparently there is little to none ready to eat and processed food, so dear cousin had to learn how to cook from scratch, but she says she would'nt live anywhere else in the world.
bret is hilarious, but it is Jemaine that really has me in fits! I can just imagine him elaborating on the dog shows Bret talks about, i def miss FOTC.
We had a dog show in the UK when I was growing up. Same show, called “One Man and his Dog”. Was crazy popular at the time. I had completely forgotten about it!
They don't even MENTION Figwit when talking about his little appearance that made a big splash! I can't get enough of the whole Figwit phenomenon thing. It's so very strange and strangely awesome at the same time.
sky wasnt around in the 80's, and even when it first came out it only had a couple of channels. channel 3 came out in 1989 and it was a huge deal. i thought the dog show was something only old people watched, like country calendar. in the 80's in NZ %90 of television was american programming, so the muppet show was really popular, knight rider, dukes of hazzard and macgyver.
Only kiwis would understand "the dog show" it was the best!! I remember watching that with my parents. Aahh Bret McKenzie summing up NZ ....it's all so true. But i love growing up in NZ! Goodluck Bret continue 2 do the kiwis proud :D
AS LINDIR HE IS DROP DEAD GORGEOUS. I CAN DO W/OUT THE BEARD THOUGH. HE' SCORCHING HOT THOUGH. THAT'S ONE ELF CAN WIN A BEAUTY CONTEST W/ THOSE LOOKS.....
There actually WERE only two channels until 1989, when TV3 made it's explosive debut. Now there's a massive number through SkyTV and miscellaneous channels. Sheepdog Trials were moderately popular in the 80s, especially on Country Calendar.

You are so lucky.
As someone who lives in Wellington, I can confirm that everyone knows someone who was in lord of the rings.
You don't even have to be from Wellington, they are all over the North Island
My cousin was an orc
peter jackson was our family friend some time ago
This is true. I only lived there for a bit as a kid, and a guy in my primary school was an uruk hai
@@ashlane3579 TELL HIM TO MAKE THE SILMARILLION MOVIES ALREADY LOL
Brit McKenzie is just brilliant. Glad he's getting the recognition he deserves.

His beard is good
Bret you got it goen oooonnn
I have aids
"Lady Arwen, we can not delay... my Lady!"
a little something for the LOTR fans
I think Bret got cast as a Tolkien Elf and Jemaine didn't because Jemaine's facial features are too deep set to be considered classically handsome.
+Jimmy Campbell LoL !
or because he looks like a llama
Jermaine is quite handsome imo
Jimmy Campbell Hehe I get it
hey..jermaine coulda been an orc XD
The funniest thing is, he really is telling the truth. I remember all those ghastly old shows. Plus I lived in Wellington for a year and a half, and I knew about 8 people who worked on the film, both on and off camera.
Same!
And then I started reminiscing about Tux Wonder Dogs, that was my true jam.
it may sound unlikely but those 'dog shows' are really entertaining. signed a Kiwi
Nobody ever asks about the disappearance of Zealand or why they had to make a second one. The world is very uncaring.
Underrated joke, actually laughed!
+Lucian Tritt
Denmark, actually.
CookieL69 Denmark has a Zealand, but New Zealand is named after the Dutch province, Zeeland.
Jay Saccheri Wouldn't it be hilarious if someone actually broke the first zealand and it was a guy named steve.. and if he fled to australia and is hiding under a big rock right now.
+Rob Fraser
Shhhh, we don't talk about Zealand
It was actually called "A Dog's Show" and had two different competitions. The first with a single barking dog that drove sheep up a hill, as Brett described. Hey Bret, your beard is good.
😂 i get it
+bailey moore He's good at finding shortcuts too.
darkfranky6 Why can't a heterosexual guy tell a heterosexual guy that he thinks his booty is fly?
Sure, you're weedy and kind of shy.
But some girlie out there must be needy for a weedy, shy guy
Just a compliment there. On your beard.
He is the Rhymnoceros
and the Hiphopopotamus, their lyrics are bottomless ....
The 43rd Firedemon *snap snap snap snap snap*
Country Calendar. New Zealand Classic.
Don't forget Tux Wonder Dogs.
UsernameStartsWithU That was my favourite show as a kid. I remember being sick once but I was so pleased because Tux Wonder Dogs was on.
Wonder Doooogs woofwoof woof woofwoof, Wonder Doooogs
His father wasn’t just a king. His father was Elendil!

Cassandra Campbell he said quite racistly

Jordan Schlansky no, Jordan. His name is Jemaine. Look it up. How's that expensive espresso machine you bought with Conan's money working?
Bret just couldn't be more adorable! Can't wait to see FOTC at the Oddball comedy fest in August! Never thought I'd get to see them live.

When I was younger I would get so excited watching 'The Dog Show'
The dog show is not on anymore. It was more than just up the hill, that event is called a huntaway, and they go through a gate. he's adorable and hilarious, so everything he says comes off funny.
Calm down Mel
Half of us are from the concords
The rest are from lotr
Nope, Austinland
"i'm from wellington where peter jackson makes the films so it's not that uncommon to be in them.." god that is so true! every few minutes of lotr i'm thinking oh i know them, i've met them several times before, etc lol
"I mean, you grew up in New Zealand, did you know about the muppets? Were the muppets on television, in New Zealand?" I swear, most Americans think anywhere outside of America is just dead space. It's New Zealand, not the bottomless abyss of the Serengeti.
To be fair, we had a prime time show about sheepdogs.
And those dogs were worthy of the front line, god bless their little panting devil hearts
***** Well no I wouldn't, the Muppets is distinguished as a worldwide thing really. I do hate America, but i'm not ignorant.
***** yawn
***** > cool ideas
Bret is such an awesome dude, and Conan is the best interviewer as well.
Bret, you're beard is still good! Huge congrats for the win, you deserved it, way to represent NZ and Flight of the Conchords!! (the best band/show in the world!)
i love conan, but him saying "i don't know who aragorn is" knocked him down a few notches :(
Colbert on the other hand is seriously knowledgeable about Tolkien and other fantasy and science fiction.
BruceLeedar
Conan TOYS with being a nerd. Colbert is gonna wipe the floor with him!
opalexian b'nafia conan's still a nerd.. just more of a history nerd than a fiction one
possibly - but conan is behind many of the best pop culture references of the early 90s... namely, the best years of the simpsons, and snl. his credits are legit
Actually, that's a solid plus in my book.
And the other show was albi the racist dragon
Haha XD you serious?
Spartan2228 Nah. Albi the racist dragon is a short clip from a made up show on the real show Flight of the Conchords
NoodleGeneration Thanks noodle generation :) and Spartan2228 I highly recommend the real show, as well as the made up show. :)
No problemo, always fun to hear from polite people. I also recommend the real show.
The Dog Show is actually compelling viewing. We had it in Australia too.
So true. I remember watching The Dog Show on TV on a Sunday evening with the sun getting in my eyes and eating mashed potato with 2 poached eggs on top. Oh and with butter. Flippin good show
We had that show in the UK, it was called "One man and his dog", I think :D
Bret is so ducking cool. He's cool as shit
+Jordan Fisher quack quack

He's got it going on
He was FIGWIT?? I thought that character looked familiar, but without the beard and the fluffy hair... nope, never would have guessed. Good for him-hope he had fun! (That was great stuff in The Making of... when he was trying to remember his lines!)
There's a FIGWIT documentary on UA-cam that's worth watching ;)
I grew up watching 'A Dog's Show' every Sunday night - one of the best shows ever!!
He came into my work a couple times! A really cool guy who wears New Balances
It makes me so happy to know that he was in the Lord of the Rings
Ha ha, I love how the audience is not sure whether or not he is joking about The Dog Show. We watched that every week.
I laughed out loud when I read this. The lack of "up" at the end made that hilarious.
They both said "WELLINGTON, NEW ZEALAND", I love it.
"ship dogs getting the ship into a pin"... I mean that's what it sounded like to my ears :-D
0:56 Real in Rio (from Rio) was the song Sergio was nominated for!
As a kiwi, I enjoyed the Muppets. However, there was also a show similar called "Fraggle Rock" & that was my favorite ^_^ " dance your cares away, worries for another day..."
hes not lying about only having 4 channels. sometimes if your lucky you might get 2 minutes of discovery channel through static before it cuts off
American audiences are so enthusiastic. Great interview though, I'm so proud of you, Bret.
Did anyone watch "Two Little Boys" or alternatively named "Deano and Nige's Best Last Day Ever?" Loved Brett (and Hamish Blake) in that
bret is hilarious, but it is Jemaine that really has me in fits! I can just imagine him elaborating on the dog shows Bret talks about, i def miss FOTC.
We had a dog show in the UK when I was growing up. Same show, called “One Man and his Dog”.
Was crazy popular at the time. I had completely forgotten about it!
This dude is hilarious without even trying !! Hahahaha
We have like 5 channels now if you include Maori channel :)
We have freeview so about 8 or 9 now lol
NZ moving up in the world!! But still no new seasons of The Dog Show :(
I went to NZ last year and I was disappointed in the lack of range in flavoured milks. The rest was mad though
his dad was the king that cut off Sharon whats its fingers and took his ring and his brothers the son
Very cool!
Sharon? Lol you mean Sauron?
Lol feminists cue to come in* hahaha
Sharon lmfao 🤣🤣🤣
We have like 6 channels now! :D
we are still airing reruns of 'A dogs show' sheepdog trials even though the show finished in 1992!!! its great!
I grew up with 4 1/2 channels in England and I'm only 21. Enjoyed it more then as well.
This was taped before he won. So *clears throat* Oscar nominated.
Now, he's in Hobbit 1 & 3!
There was literally a muppet called Lew Zealand, damn straight we watched the Muppets.
"I d rather watch the New Zealand sheep dog competition than a match of US baseball"
It’s the motherflippin
Fellowship of the Ring was filmed over 10 years ago, wow time flies.
His tie is so out of place in that shirt...he looks like a child in a grown up custome. Adorable.
You're actually pretty spot on with that conversational haha
God I miss Flight of the Conchords - one of the most underrated shows ever.
They don't even MENTION Figwit when talking about his little appearance that made a big splash! I can't get enough of the whole Figwit phenomenon thing. It's so very strange and strangely awesome at the same time.
I was an orc in return of the king and i got hit by a boulder which ive kept to this day, lol.
this only adds to my increased fondness for New Zealand culture
He's got it goin' on...
Not shocking because even their comedy songs are so catchy and brilliant.
sky wasnt around in the 80's, and even when it first came out it only had a couple of channels. channel 3 came out in 1989 and it was a huge deal. i thought the dog show was something only old people watched, like country calendar. in the 80's in NZ %90 of television was american programming, so the muppet show was really popular, knight rider, dukes of hazzard and macgyver.
his beard is pretty good...oscar winner now.
Sheepdog trials are actually very impressive. Well trained animals!
Wait. He didn't even mention his favorite childhood show Albi The Racist Dragon
He won it
CONGRATS BRET!!!!! So deserved. ^-^
Bret? Like Brittany? FOTC!
Wow he's actually a really nice guy
I thought he was talking about Tux Wonder Dogs at first. Such a crack up, that show.
He's just beautiful❗
I remember him from back when he was Figwit. Ah. Memories.
3:15 Bret actully says something in that movie too!
Conan, you should have asked about Flight of the Concord.
he should get nominated for playing John Snow in Game of Thrones lol
Albi the racist dragon.
When I was a kid in Austria we only had 2 Channels too
He's so pretty
New Zealand needs The Conan O'brien Show...
I'm pretty sure he's the one who tells Arwen they have to keep moving, before she runs back to Rivendell.
he went from lasgane for 1 to an OSCAR damn
I miss The Dog Show. So many fond memories of watching that!!
Kate Lattey is it really true that there are 4 channels right now?
Is Bret talking about Tux Wonder Dogs?
no, the dog show
Nope, Crazy Dogs.
Yeah haha I was laughing at first but then remembered oh wait, that was actually a real thing
There actually WERE only two channels until 1989, when TV3 made it's explosive debut. Now there's a massive number through SkyTV and miscellaneous channels.
Sheepdog Trials were moderately popular in the 80s, especially on Country Calendar.
"Lady Arwen, we cannot delay... My Lady!" I spotted you!! 8-)
He looks like Jay from Clerks in that elf picture.
