This is, by far, my favorite video you've produced so far. Of course, I'm a tad bias because it's my amp in the video. I can't believe how this thing sounds. All boxes are checked with this amp, great tone, LOTS of headroom, and most importantly, it only weighs 25lbs +/-. Thanks for a job well done, and for those doubters of BJs out there, just come plug in this little jewel.

Detective work at its finest!!!!! Im sure the owner of this amp truly appreciates the effort you put into this amp. You are da' man!!!!

It was driving me crazy! But, until now changing the tube helped.

Hey, long time no see, nice to see a new video. I sold my Blues Junior because it just sounded terrible if you got the master up a bit. This was probably the problem. Nice to watch a guy have a great breakthrough on video. BRAVO!

64 ma.? 😮 Little warm for an el84! That was a crazy one on the oscillation. Ribbon cables are bad idea in any amp. Ive seen grid wires right beside the b plus in ribbon cables on some amps. You would think if they're gonna run unshielded ribbon cables they would at least try to put the signal on the opposite end of the high voltage but nope, right side by side! There have been times that I've gotten rid of them and done individual leads just to get things quieter. Never seen a case this bad tho. Thats just bad layout. Good detective work tho 👌

Yep, very bad design. I have separated them before. I have also gone as far as to replace the ribbon cables with individual leads, and shielding the preamp grids. Problem is circuit board design programs do not see the difference.

We can discuss it. I just did another one a couple weeks back and the owner was blown away. Contact me through the info in the about section of my channel. A short video of one of them also just showed up on Facebook.

This was an entertaining and informative episode 😅
Can I please pick your brain for a second? I bought a Tweed Jnr with the Jensen speaker about 3 years ago. Had the screen resistors and caps upgraded for reliability while a tech was checking out something under warranty.
I don’t mind how the amp sounds (flubby bass aside) but I’m trying to get overdrive pedals to sound better as it can sound harsh and fizzy when the drive or volume goes up and a bit spikey.
People suggesting to try another speaker such as a Celestion Creamback. Others say to put a less gainy tube in V1. I saw another video of yours where you upgraded transformers.
Would the speaker change be the best place to start?
For reference I am running medium output humbuckers into the amp with the bass right off, treble at 3-4, mids right up and the preamp gain on the edge of breakup but have tried it with a little more gain and totally clean with the master up.

The best advice I can give you at the time is to leave the speaker alone. Changing the speaker will not help the amp problems. Change the screen supply resistor and the phase inverter tube, as in my earlier videos. This is mandatory. Be sure to shield the leads as in the last video. Changing the transformers makes a huge difference. But this is only for those wanting the most out of it. Thanks for watching.

@@guitarc.p.r.9675 thanks very much. I’m in Australia or else I’d have brought my amp in 😁
I’ll have a look for the other video and watch it.
If I don’t do any mods, I was looking at something like a Marshall DSL as a replacement. Anything to be aware of with those?

Oh God NO! Look for my DSL/TSL videos. I constantly have anything from the full line in my shop. DSL 20 bad output transformer, etc They are all time bombs.

Thanks, I’ll look for those videos!
Anything in the Marshall studio or Origin lineup worth looking at?

Could this be measured with a mutual conductance tube tester to see if each side matches? I commented way too soon and just watched the rest, lol. Great job, thank you!

What, you think I did not think of that? :) I could not find anything wrong with the tubes. Apparently some are just more sensitive to the oscillations.

Wow amazing work. It looks like at the beginning the blue wire was ABOVE the 2 ribbon cable on the left. But at the end it was underneath. Is that part of the solution?

    • @guitarc.p.r.9675
      @guitarc.p.r.9675  4 місяці тому

Not for this problem. However, I always move the output transformer leads as far away from the ribbon cables (input grid leads) as possible. In fact when I change transformers I actually solder the leads to the bottom of the boards and tuck them away from everything else. Just proper practice. Thanks for checking out the video.
