Man, this might sound crazy, but I just realized that second “I don’t know” probably wasn’t even for/towards AJ…
We know in one of the episodes that Clem actually talks alone a lot, going as far as having full conversations with Lee in her dreams.
What I mean is that the second “I don’t know” was Clem probably fully reliving that memory, that’s why she answered in a sad way, because in her mind she wasn’t saying it to AJ, she was saying it to Lee.

It's crazy cuz I grew up with clem frrl that's something that you don't recreate we started out with Lee and clem as a little girl then we go through her life it took years to get through this story and it really feels like we grew up with the characters I love this series
