Stubby Bowers , a long-time member and former bartender/manager at the Kent Canadian Club, has said he was present when the hole was made with a drill to route a wire to help steady the mount on the wall. He's told that same story for decades. He first told me around 1991 or 1992. Now why you have to drill a hole when you could wrap the wire around the tine, I don't know.
Bot fly larve can cause holes in the horns ,but typically don't go all the way thru. Or so my taxidermist said after I asked why my buck horn had a hole in it, lol .

You'd need a drill to do that. My guess is that it was a .22 rimfire round. Some noob that works or lived near that arsenal tried to head shoot that buck, missed and punched a hole in the antler. It was also probably hit by another round(s) to the body and ran away and died a slow death near those tracks. Yup, the world record whitetail buck was in all likelihood killed by a poacher, abandoned, wasted, lost....
Maybe it’s only a replica rack but they have this deer full body mounted in a bass pro in NW Ohio. I see it every time I go in there. Obviously the deer wasn’t originally full body mounted but perhaps BPS bought it and re-mounted it as a full body. There’s a plaque by it that I might have to fully read next time but I always thought it was the real hole in horn buck
Have to agree with M. The hole was there and the deer got caught in the fence and died. I cannot imagine a small wire puncturing an antler. That seems completely unreasonable.

The Hole In The Horn Buck should have never been removed from the Kent Canadian Club and should be returned. They were idiots to have ever sold it ! It doesn't seem right to, now, be hanging in Missouri. It needs to be returned to Ohio. ...no, I'm not from Ohio.

A couple years ago I found a good sized dead 8 pointer back in a swamp on the 4th day of WV rifle season. It had been hitting the 70's that week and it was junk. I noticed a white spot at the base of the right antler and looked closer. There was a bullet hole right through the middle of it and about 3/8 wide circular flake had popped out around the front of the hole. The flaked area is what looked white. That bullet had gone through there like a woodpecker did it. Looked about like a .264 or 7mm hole. I don't know about a solid lead bullet cutting a round hole. I am thinking that back then it might have been popular to use solid lead bullets. Anyway, a jacketed bullet will cut a round hole in antler bone.
@@gerritstell6248 You bring up a great point....the only thing is, when "horns" are in velvet, and still growing, the only real "soft" spots are on the very tips. I remember looking at a close up of that hole years ago...they showed pictures from both sides. To me it looked like a small caliber bullet hole, one side was rather "clean", and the other looked kind of "raggedy", like an exit hole. But, I don't know for certain. 🦌✌

Grab an antler you have and try to force a piece of metal wire through it. You'll find out how phony this theory is. In fact I doubt you could even force a nail through an antler in one swing
So gross typical score was 151? pfft. Looks like a sick 4 year old that was getting fed some weird food at the deer farm in ohio back in the 40's. My grand father owned the farm outside of Cleveland. Looks like one that was trying to get out and ended up dying in the fence. There is still a lot of controversy regarding this buck, even the exact location where it was found is still contested. In my opinion a farm raised deer has no business being in any record book. This was a very "photogenic deer" if you catch my drift. Shame.
