If Canada wants to become a Republic there'll be no hard feelings from the UK. The problem is that if Britain ever changed the monarchy/abolished it, Canada and the other realms would have to accept the British decision that they didn't even vote for themselves. So time to think about what new system you want.

You do realise that it's pretty much impossible for Canada to get rid of the monarchy? Their own constitution prevents it from happening. And there would be hard feelings from the majority of the UK. The UK's strong relations with Canada comes down to us being part of the same family and sharing the same head of state.

    • @User-qo8rw

Actually, what you said is false. The British Crown and Canadian Crown are two separate entities, we just have the same person who bears our crowns. If the UK were to ever decide to abolish the monarchy, Elizabeth II would still remain Queen of Canada and Queen of her other independent realms. The funny thing is, legally speaking, it's easier for the UK to abolish the monarchy than it is for Canada.

The monarchy is an important aspect and reflection of this nation's history. After abolishing the Canadian Red Ensign as the flag, The Maple Leaf Forever as the anthem, and retiring the name the Dominion of Canada as well as Dominion Day, the monarchy is all that we have left connecting us to the motherland. The reason this country exists is because of Britain, and we can thank Britain for the fact this land we call Canada is not a part of the United States. The government revolves around the monarchy. It does more good than harm. Liberals have no respect for this nation's history or identity. God Save the Queen and protect the Canadian Crown!

We are fortunate to have the system that we have. Most Canadian's don't fully understand how relevant our monarchy is; due to lack of education on this subject in schools. your speech is useless, Canada is a monarchy only from a formal point of view, de facto it is already a republic, it would be a matter of formalizing it. Don't you think that the French-Canadians have no desire to submit, even if only formally, to the British crown?
Furthermore, I remind you that a correlation is not always an indication of a cause and effect link, republics are often poorer because poor countries are those with an unstable past, which have seen wars and revolutions. In my opinion, you are reversing the cause and effect, monarchies do not make countries more stable, but historically stable countries are the ones that have allowed monarchies to survive. Of course this is not always the case, because the world is more complicated, but this also applies to your vision.

I get where you're coming about how many of republics are poor due to unstable pasts. However, it's still hard to deny a monarchy's effectiveness with 9 out of the 15 countries with the best quality of life are constitutional monarchies. Canada is one of the longest continuing monarchies in the world... starting with the French monarchy, then the British monarchy and now the Canadian monarchy (which is legally distinct from the British crown.. we just have the same person wearing our crowns). The monarchy is a major part of Canadian history. The fact is, if it weren't for it, we would've been annexed by the US many of years ago.

It's a matter of national identity and pride to have our own head of state, and not rely on Britain to give us one--least of all from a single, caucasian, Protestant-only family. We need to look at options before the queen dies, so she has the distinction of being the last British monarch over Canada. We’ve amended the Constitution before, and we can do it again. This is something most Canadians already support, and an opportunity to bring Quebec into the fold (support for a republic is at 72% there). Unanimity doesn’t mean we must all agree. It means 11 legislatures need to agree by just 50% + 1. And I suspect it will be much higher than that.

She's the queen of Canada. Britain doesn't have a figure head over Canada. The Queen of England isn't the Queen of Canada and vice versa. She just assumes the responsibility of both crowns, Canada can even form its own crown with its own leader separate from the English crown. Also the government and even the provinces acknowledge that the viability of Canada becoming a republic is next to none. Barbados isn't Canada, our political stability as a constitutional monarchy keeps investors and businesses running that and the added bonus that the westminster system is almost 1000 years old and proven resilient

Besides, then instead of having a non-political Head of State that is separate from any political party and who represented the nation itself and had great continuity (which is a wonderful thing during turbulent times when people need an anchor that they know will not float away with the tide)... instead we'd open ourselves up to having a head of state that is from a political party and will change with the tide of office...no continuity... .NO THANKS.

I still remember her words and they still ring louder than ever from the day she spoke from her speech. And she has struggled long and hard to keep her families together and the day she lost her husband that was ultimately the saddest day for her as well as us Canadian's. She is the bridge to our rivers and to lose her is not a happy option!! We love our Queen, I just wish her grandson's would show her a lot more respect I know that would really brighten her heart up!!! She realy does have a hard job it's not easy for her and the way the world is right now it's not going to be anymore easier for her.She has a lot of decisions to make for her people as well as her and other countries!! So I totally understand and am sympathetic to her job as a queen. Plus she's very giving to people who she thinks deserve it!!! Like, sir Shaun Connery!!! That's a good woman in my books!!! You may say whatever you want, but it won't matter at all. There's still about 95% chance that getting rid of the monarchy cannot or will not ever happen to Canada. Because, what you don't know I assume, the monarchy in Canada is highly protected by Constitutional act 1982. This act has set a bar to abolishing the crown so high, that it's now as difficult as nailing jelly to a tree. Even for Prime Minister himself or his government, this is not something within their capability. It requires a very very special amendment to do it, which will be very difficult to achieve, as well as lengthy and costly. Due to this reason, many political theorist have even labelled abolishing the monarchy in Canada as simply impossible.

When enough people decide that this relic from the past needs to be removed from our modern society, we will suddenly find "impossible" actually just means inconvenient for those in charge (especially the un-elected ones)

My background is MacKenzie, Stewart and Spencer, so I have roots that stretch across the sea to Scotland, England, Ireland, and France. Our Stewart roots in Canada will celebrate our 95th family reunion in 2022. I look forward to seeing Princess Diana Spencer's son Prince William assuming the throne and reigning in a more modernized British Empire including Canada. After all our Parliamentary system of democratic governance is rooted in the British government system. We have enjoyed amiable relations with the British Monarchy to date. Let's move forward with the New Young Prince William.
