Thankful for the rain we got the past week. We got about 2" over in Osceola county. This is my first year in awhile that I didnt plant a summer soil builder blend. Glad I didnt because of the drought.
Between the drought the past few years and lack of time, it has been tough to plant a summer plot. Also feel like I just dont get the full benefit of it due to our short growing season in Michigan. Running a couple experiments this fall to try and make it so that I have stuff growing next summer from this years fall blend. Going to add more clovers, hairy vetch, and chicory. Of course rye comes back the following spring and helps suppress weeds and build OM 👍
Yes! I do agree and it is a short turn around. Timing for me wasn't ideal but I had to start this program. My fall planting will be later than usual as well with a little different seed blend. Hopefully we are not fertilizing and cultivating soon. Drought tolerant seed worked great i believe and in the next few years see healthier deer.
@CompleteDeerTV Glad to see you heading more towards no till. Hard for me since I do not have a no till drill. I have been doing a very light one pass with my disc just to get the seed covered. Still leaves a bunch of thatch to hold moisture. I havent had good luck with just broadcasting on top of my sandy soil. The seed just seems to sit there and bake on top. When are you planning on getting your fall blend in? I think i am going to shoot for early august, depending on rain. Im going to be planting a blend of rye, annual clovers, hairy vetch, radish, turnips, chicory. Cereal rye is probably the only thing that will survive the heavy deer browsing lol
@BigWoods40 I hope to get seed in mid to late August. I'll start beginning of Aug. I have a few to get in before then that didn't plant summer plots. Is that your own mix or premixed. I'm looking to plant rye, triticale, radish, turnip, buckwheat, rape, berseem clover
@CompleteDeerTV I make up my own mix. Im not sure if i save any money doing my own mix but do have fun experimenting with it.
