  • In this video I discuss whether the new Nikon 180-600mm zoom lens is good for wildlife photography. I also look at the pro's and con's of using a big zoom lens or a prime lens for wildlife photography.

    I use a Nikon D7500 with the 200-500. I wish I could afford a mirrorless body and a big prime, but to be honest my set up works really well for me and as me technique and field craft has improved over the last couple of years I'm more than happy with my equipment. One of the things I like about your channel is that you using zooms shows that great photos can be made with them. So many other channels only use professional bodies and primes, which are just totally unaffordable for many of us. 👍

      Hi, really pleased you like my channel. Your setup is great for wildlife photography. The D7500 coupled with the 200-500mm gives great quality results. I love zoom lenses to be honest and the quality is there for all to see. Thanks for watching, all the best, Steve.

    The Nikon 180-600 sounds great😲🙂📸. The positives seem to outweigh the negatives👍. Also less neck ache from the heaviness and strap😲. Interesting video Steve Hedges.

      Yes I think this is a definite improvement on the 200-500mm Nikon zoom. Looking forward to getting hold of one. All the best, Steve.

    Good news for Nikon users Steve, swap in that 200-500mm now ! Great focal range 👌

      Yes absolutely Mark, I think they start shipping in August. I'll be keeping my 600mm prime though.

    The lens looks awesome and all the reports that I have seen / read say that even the pre-production version is great. I'm normally on a D500 with a 500pf lens, however, I have ordered a Z8 and might have to save a bit harder for that lens too. Good video again mate.

      Thanks very much, glad you enjoyed it. Yes I'm definitely buying this lens. Can't wait to get my hands on one. Hope you don't have to wait too long for your Z8. Cheers Steve.

    Looks like a great carry-round lens. There is some fantastic kit out there, I don't have any primes yet but constantly tempted to get one. Love my Canon 100-500 though. Cheers Keith

      Hi Keith, yes it looks like a very good option. I love the flexibility of a zoom lens. All the best, Steve.

    For me the 180-600 woth a Z6II would probably be my perfect combo.

    Hi Steve great video and i think your bang on i use the 200 -500mm and a 500mm f4 and at times i cant tell the difference between the two and yes sometimes i wish i was useing my zoom instead of the prime when they are close as for the new 180-600mm zoom ive only seen a couple of vids on it and the only thing i can say is its what the 200-500mm should of been only thing i wish is that it was still 5.6 at the full focal length and not 6.3.👍

    • @SteveHedgesPhotography
      @SteveHedgesPhotography  Рік тому +1

      Hi Andy, yes totally agree, I think the extra 100mm at the long end is really important. I would also have liked it to have been F5.6 through the whole focal length but It's only a third of a stop slower so I can live with that. All the best, Steve.

      @andyheywoodsphotographya-h7913 did you notice any focus breathing on 200-500mm vs 500mm prime?
      It is field of view the same at close distances? Ari Hazeghi say that the 200-500mm is actually 450mm at the long end on close distance?
      Can you confirm this, thanks a lot.

      @@strix_pht i'm probably not the most technically minded for this but your probably going to get more breathing on a zoom than a prime i cant say that ive noticed a great deal on my copies.

    • @SteveHedgesPhotography
      @SteveHedgesPhotography  Рік тому +1

      Hi, I haven't personally noticed a big difference in focal length at the long end of the 200-500mm with closer subjects. Although I've not really been looking for that to be honest. I've used this lens for over 5 years and have been happy with it though. Sorry I can't be of more help. All the best, Steve.

    I’ve watched a few videos about it Steve and even tho I’m a Canon user I have to say it looks like a really good lens, I like the idea of the internal zoom especially, I’m very happy with my 100-500mm lens and on my r10 I get the benefit of the crop giving me the equivalent reach of 800mm, each to our own mate lol! 👍📷🦅

      I've shot with multiple systems over the years but finally rented the R7 last month and even with an adapted ef 100-400 it blew me away.
      I'd love to see Nikon release a mirrorless crop camera to match it.

    • @SteveHedgesPhotography
      @SteveHedgesPhotography  Рік тому

      I've taught a couple of people who have the R7 and it's a great camera. Yeah I think Nikon should add a crop sensor mirrorless to replace the D500 which is a brilliant wildlife DSLR.

    I'm waiting for the 180-600 to replace my 200-500. All of my lenses are zooms, for me prime lenses would be too restrictive.

      Yes I think the 180-600mm is going to be a great replacement for the 200-500mm lens. I do have prime lenses but like you I love the flexibility of a zoom lens. Thanks for watching, all the best, Steve.

    I have used a sigma 150-600 for 7 years with good results, have the new 180-600 ordered already because it is going to be light years ahead of what it have in terms of focus, size and usability. Primes are way way way out of my budget as a hobbyist who just shoots for fun. Most of my shots are going to be around dawn and dusk and i have coped with the sigma at f6.3 for years so the nikon is going to be no worse in that regard.

    • @SteveHedgesPhotography

      Hi Philip, yes I think this is going to be a great addition to all our camera bags. I can't wait to get my hands on one. You're right I don't think the F6.3 aperture is a problem. Hope you enjoy using the new lens. All the best, Steve.
