  • In this video, artist Stefan Baumann Painter on location Plein Air demonstrates how to start a painting on location Step by Step. Also included is what all artists should know and how to think when painting outdoors while the challenges of light and shadow change every seven minutes.
Get a free Book at his website www.StefanBaumann.com.
The paintings of Stefan Baumann reveal the true spirit of nature by transporting the viewer to distant lands that have gone unseen and undisturbed. With the huge success of Baumann’s weekly PBS television series “The Grand View: America’s National Parks through the Eyes of an Artist,” millions of people witness for themselves the magic Stefan portrays on canvas, his passion for nature and the American landscape. By distilling his love of nature into a luminous painting of brilliant, saturated color that transcends conventional landscape and wildlife art, Baumann has captured the hearts and imaginations of a generation. Each painting becomes an experience rather than merely a picture - a vivid manifestation of his special and personal union with nature and the outdoor world. Through his mastery of light, color and artful composition, Baumann invites you to experience nature in its purity. It is no wonder that for many years distinguished American collectors, including former presidents and financial icons, have sought out his work.

Ok Stefan. I know your used to great compliments. But i need you to know something.
Im an Aussie wildlife painter from Northern Territory.
Since suffering RSI...from water colour pencil use. I decided to learn to paint in oils.
Ive tried to learn a new way to paint.....but in two weeks of watching your you tube channel ive remembered that I want to paint because the view of our earth is so beautiful. The way the sun loghts up a field and lights up the sky. Thank you!

I love using my fingers, it is so comfortable. When I saw you do it, I said to myself, hum, he doesn't mind about the paint, and then he mention turpentine and wiping his brush on a cloth. Man I ran to wash my hand when I got the turpentine on my hand when I was cleaning my brush. He just made my day. You are not going to die. Thanks.

Ah! A new color to check out: Asphaltum. Surprisingly I can only find it in craft paint for acrylics, which is what I paint with. Not that I need another color or tube of paint! Love this video. Please bring us more!

Asphaltum.. I cannot live without it. A very beautiful transparent color that does every thing including mixes as Burnt Umber does.
Give me tubes of asphaltum, Cremnitz white, cobalt blue, quinacridome Magenta or Rose, and cad Lemon and I will be able to block in, set values as well as temperature and work halfway through modeling.
My work actually comes together more harmoniously than when I had 10 - 12 colors out to start with.
      Richeson Asphaltum.
      Code word "Mummy"
      Thanks, Sensei Stefan

I’m painting along with you in this painting and I really like adding the turpentine and the effects that it causes now that the block in is done I’m going with Liquin for the remaining work, details. Is this ok?
I have another question , do you favor cobalt blue over ultramarine blue ? and you said that cobalt blue was a little sweeter ,do you use ultramarine blue and if so when do you like to use ultramarine blue? I learned a lot in this quick little painting . I want to follow along with you on your Grand Canyon one too. I like how you used paint thinner to remove paint to expose the wash that you laid down prior to starting the composition. very cool !!
