  • Chinese development finance in Africa today is a small fraction of what it was a decade ago when Beijing's policy banks provided billions of dollars in loans to countries across the continent.
But while those heady days of easily accessible finance will likely never return, there are indications major Chinese lenders are once again gearing up to extend new financing for badly needed infrastructure projects in Africa.
Tarela Moses and Tim Hirschel-Burns from Boston University's Global Development Center closely follow the latest Chinese financing trends and join Eric & Cobus to discuss why there's reason for modest optimism.

China tried best to help Africa. US tried best to stop China. What will Africa do?

As long as China believes that African friends understand that every dollar flowing from China to Africa is earned by the hard work of the Chinese people, China's loans to Africa will not change much. China looks forward to establishing sustainable financial relations. Money lent to countries in need should be repaid and not evaded with unreasonable excuses. In particular, China is least willing to be hijacked by some countries who take advantage of the current tense relations between China and Western countries.

I can forsee the new innovative ways of financing would be used as propaganda to paint a negative narrative of China especially with equity investment.

Yeah, but at the end of the day, what does it really matter? The two sides are going to continually go at each other over one thing or another, but it hasn't been an impediment to Chinese engagement in these countries. So, again, the question is so what? - Eric

@@chinaglobalsouthOh don’t dismiss the powerful effects of propaganda on the local populace in thinking that they got a bad deal, especially now when the west still generally controls the power of the narrative.
Although it’s unlikely to stop China’s engagement in Africa, the more impediments the less the funds and ultimately it’s Africa that suffers.

@@chinaglobalsouthTake the example of the recent example you mentioned con your earlier episodes where African leaders pleaded with China to renegotiate and waive off the interests of these loans. Where did the African leaders came up with that idea? Because of western propaganda on Chinese loans, did the African leaders even plead with western banks or private institutions on their loans? Nope why because those are private money or they felt that it would not have yielded any results.

@@chinaglobalsouth the two sides are going at each other? when? did China ever attack the USA?
the difference between China and the US .. China didn't spend the last four decades destabilizing the Middles East and Africa through its regime change operations (color revolution) and military interventions (Iraq, Libya, Syria, Afghanistan, Sudan, Somalis, Yemen, etc ) while at the same time fomenting radicalism by supporting ISIS and Al Qaeda both in Syria and Yemen.
the US has spent trillion of dollars on wars in the middle east and Africa, destroying the regions, while China is trying to help Africa and the middle east ..
The US is the main source of destruction of our modern world.

I wonder how Chinese investment views the different kinds of gov'ts it works with. Clearly, some are corrupt & don't spread the wealth to the people. But of course, Chinese investors don't interfere & just make business deals. It seems to me though, that irresponsible use of loan money can create more problems than are solved. New infrastructure is nice, but not when not maintained for example.
