Hello Laura and Michael I use to hiking in 28 years a go. That's spongy plants that you was pointing at is sphagnum capillifolium or sphagnum Magellanicum google it so it can give you more details. These videos are bringing back some great memories of Sao Miguel, as my parents were born in Sao Miguel Acores.
I have been there 4 times but haven't visited in over 28 years...but planning on going this summer with my family

Being from Canada i do agree. It does remind me of the East coast of Canada ( Nova Scotia and New Foundland) but with a sub tropical climate.

We don’t really know. A guess would be to preserve the wildlife.
@@LauzaAndMichael That is correct. The Lagoa do Fogo is a natural reserve and one of the means of protecting its wildlife and flora is not allowing people to swim on it.
