A long time ago I heard from an actual Finnish war veteran who shot it, he called it the elephant gun. He wasn't too happy with the recoil, told he had two pairs of thick woolen socks against the shoulder to lessen the impact. Perfectly reasonable as the rifle was used as an anti-materiel weapon when its usefulness was over as an AT weapon, it wasn't just a couple of shots a day.
In Finnish Elephant Gun is used as a term for heavy impact things. For heavy weapons sure. But the sedative combo given to aggressive mental patients is also called an Elephant Gun. I believe it's known as B52 in the English slang for medical personell. Nice info, I just wanted to give a heads up to people Googling this and getting confused.
My uncle told me the Germans would turn the AAA onto the troops and the rounds were so fast that his guys would just start exploding then you’d hear the roar rolling in afterwards. Absolutely terrifying.
I’m sure it is an awful thing to see, but if I was gonna die in combat I’d rather get exploded and die in an instant rather than from a sucking chest wound
Everyone in WW2 turned the AAA on the enemy infantry and armor when they had to. Quad 50s, quad 20s - ultimately ANY weapon would be used on infantry if you were in combat.
@@smgdfcmfah When I was younger, 70s/80s, I remember hearing nonsense that you could not use certain weapons (like auto cannons) against troops, too destructive and brutal. Like artillery wouldn't turn you to mist...
Wow… just one shot disassembled that last guy And that recoil seems pretty nasty too! Never seen anyone get pushed so far back while prone. Justin is THE MAN for taking that and shooting so well
Reminds me when I read the gun inventors memoirs (Aimo Lahti) when he was visiting the frontlines during the war and they encountered destroyed Soviet tank, I can't recall was it T 26 or BT 7, but it was shot on front of the turret with that rifle and the round went straight through, hit the gunner on head and exited from the back of the turret. The inventor peeked inside of the turret hatch and it was just a red mess. Really tells how powerful these were back in the day.
Maybe an 1800s style cannon loaded with a mix of 00 ball, nails, and pieces of glass? Would that be legal to own and shoot at targets? I mean demolition ranch managed to shoot a WW2 tank. There must be a way.
Wow...that last shot...poor guy got some kick from the shield and the bullet too... To be fair that policarbonate face shield held up pretty good despite getting a hit from a 20mm...i expected it to shatter to pieces. Nice video as always. Love ya guys!
I dont know about these specific orange 20x138mmB Rheinmetall ammo, but the general ApI-T (and inert AP-T), HeF to HeFI-T and Pzgr.40 HVAP was build till the very end by germany, and ApI-T and Hefi-T continued by france for some time after the war, cince they used a big stock of german 20mm Mg 151/20 and 20mm Flak 38 L/65 guns. (Note, the Mg 151/20 uses 20x82mm Mauser and not the 20x138mmB Rheinmetall).
According to military records, the L-39 had tank kills with 2/3" penetrations from 500 meters. 1940s soviet steel might not be equivalent to AR500, but it would be interesting to see if it could do better from a shorter distance.
I had a buddy, retired Air Force, bachelor, who was a Class III collector. He had a Lahti set up on his living room coffee table, as a conversation piece. He had made a loading press for the 20mm round. Every so often, we would go shoot that beast (and other toys) at a “range” another buddy had on his ranch, in Eastern New Mexico. We put some Tannerite in an old heavy refrigerator from the early 1950s. That Lahti was terrible to shoot. The recoil felt like it would pick you up and wave you like a flag. Just country boys having fun destroying stuff. America 🇺🇸 ❗️

You should try using square style buckets of water instead of round buckets. Water has a high enough surface tension, hitting a round wall is probably more prone to deflect the bullets out of the planned trajectory. Obviously you'd still be dealing with a bullet squirrelling through water. But hitting a flat surface will cause less impact on the trajectory. EDIT: I love your style of research and destruction btw!
The orange projectiles are actually unhardened target practice tracer (TP-T) rounds for export to Sweden in WWII, hence the German waffenamt stamp. A dark blue projectile with white stripe would be the equivalent armor piercing tracer (AP-T) round in Finnish service, or bright yellow with stripe for Swedish service. Though at this energy level, the end results are the same.
