Thank you for the video. This tears me up. I am so proud of my grandpapa for what he did for us. First of all, he was all alone and barely spoke English. He came a long way from Germany to the US alone with nothing either. We respect you for what you have done for us. You are still our family's hero forever. RIP

Outstanding, and a most powerful documentary. Thank you for uploading this historical tribute to so many that sacrificed, in order to provide the comforts we take for granted today, in this great country. 10+ stars!

I seen Ellis Island video with my eyes what my father eyes had seen when he came through Ellis Island... An Awesome video to remember how they came.
I am proud to be a son of an immigrant from Lebanon.
God Bless Ellis Island, if it was not for it, I would have never been Born...

Amazing! My grandparents came through Ellis Island and Boston from Norway in the early 1900's. So thankful for their sacrifices and strength to make a better life for themselves and their descendants. I had a tear coming at the end when the father held up his child and waved the American flag....his smile was awesome!

they went through all that to have a better life in America... hard to think any one would be wanting to do this now in those ships with little to no food. Thankyou grandpa for traveling from Ireland to America thank you for putting up with everything. Thank you for the post this was so beautiful.

I visited Ellis Island back in April 2012, and it was a humbling, moving,
emotional experience all tied together. Extremely fascinating how some 12 million people
came through this tiny Island in New York harbor from 1892 -1954. If you ever visit NYC,
    Ellis Island is a must.

My (paternal) grandfather (1899-1977) and his family were actually pretty fortunate, having made the trans-Atlantic crossing in only ten days; as winter would have been the time of the very worst storms! The crossing, in general, could take anywhere from a week to a month. Soon after their later arrival in St. Louis, he got a job selling newspapers (in all kinds of weather and circumstances); newspapers are pretty much what he did all his life -- from age 8, right up till retirement.

This was awesome, this was so much more REAL to me than listening to the stories my grandmother has told us,actually SEEING what they faced/went through with all of those obstacles yet they had their dreams/plans for a much better life than the one they had left behind which was a life filled with no work/jobs & no way to support their families yet many had heard about America & it`s opportunities so here they came & here they stayed making many contributions to their communities to the point where they opened their own shops, becoming police officers & working within the courts as well as being in local newspapers along with getting honoured as well as plaques, yes, they went to school, learned English & went to work as well as helping others just as they were helped,my great grand parents on one side came from the Province D`cainella Di Caserta in Rome Italy which in 1966 my relatives went back to see if anyone would still be there yet it was gone, not even heard of,yet they came to America in 1899,2 women came first,my great grandmother & her sister to make money & then one went back when they had enough & brought the rest of the family who wanted to come with them back with them to stay where they lived in a place called "Federal Hill" an Italian neighborhood as most Italians came & lived here at this place,my other grand parents came from Poland & Austria Hungary as well as Germany & England settling into different parts of Rhode Island also going on to own their own respective businesses so this is such a treat to see as they all truly did achieve "The American Dream" as it was at that time & I almost could "feel" that journey much more in "seeing" it whilst hearing words being said reminding me of my grandmothers voice telling me the same thing yet now there are photos to go with it so yes, much better this way than in only hearing her words & story, lol kind of like "TELL O VISION-Television" with my grand mother "telling" & with the vision it is so much the clearer picture now, giving so much gratitude for the upload : ) : ) : ) !!!

My paternal grandfather (1899-1977) got out of Czarist Russia with his Mom and siblings, to join Dad (and other siblings [who made it back in 1906, we believe]) in Saint Louis, Missouri. It was roughly a 2,000-mile journey to Rotterdam during early 1908 (Grandpa at age eight then), to board the S.S. Rijndam (built & launched 1901; scuttled 1929 for anything salvageable!). And then a long wait (in the middle of winter! -- of hours, or maybe even days!) for their ship to come. Well, anyway, the S.S. Rijndam departed Rotterdam on February 8th of that year; arriving at Ellis Island on the 18th (just ten days later). They were very fortunate in this regard; winter in the northern Atlantic is usually the time of the very worst storms! Well, the next day (February 19th), they were cleared to go on to Missouri; to begin a brand-new life in America! Also note: there were only 46 states at that time; New Mexico and Arizona wouldn't become states until 1912! Once in Saint Louis, Grandpa spent most of his life (from boyhood) selling newspapers to help support the family. Until he and Grandma (1904-'93 -- they were Reform Jews, by the way) moved out to Los Angeles in August of 1975.

@BreezesofConey Thank you, I came here from Vietnam as a GI baby through JFK airport in 1997. This Vid brought me tears and overwhelmed of pride, sadness and appreciation. I remember I arrived with $19.00 maybe four set of clothings and a pair of cheap dress shoe, as I came out of JFK terminal, I was informed by the INS officer that I need to take a connecting flight to Utica, NY for my final destination. I was confused but I did not care as long as I am in America ! May God bless our Country !

My grandfather came here via Ellis Island as an 8-year-old boy at that time (February, 1908). They originally came from Reczicse, a small farming village in czarist Russia. Having made the difficult journey during the winter of 1907-'08, they made their way to Rotterdam, Holland. There they waited (for hours, or perhaps even days!) for their ship to come -- the S.S. Ryndam, for Holland-Amerika Lines. It was a 10-day journey to Ellis Island, to ultimately meet with their family in St. Louis.

i like watching history. i looked at ellis island a lot growing up in new york. but as i got older i realized how american history did not include me as a black man. my ppl didn't migrate here we were brought here. i wish our names were recorded so black ppl could trace back were we came from. but we were not allowed to keep our names. very empty feeling knowing every time i write my name i know its not mine. our last names go back to the family that owned us. america is a very difficult place to describe sometimes.

Most of the African Americans came from west Africa, from countries like Liberia (US puppet state), Angola etc. Easier from the British colonies in Africa, the french didn´t send Africans in the colonies of others. They shipped people in Haiti , and other former french colonies. (Oh, and the slaves were send by other black people (land lords) in exchange for money..... Basically rich black leaders from Africa were enslaving other people from various tribes and then they would send them in some ¨market type¨ towns, and sell them to the Europeans that would later bring them in their own colonies to work the cotton, sugar and mines . Trust me , i studied this subject for a long period of time. You can only trace the place from where your ancestors came via DNA comparison. It´s a sad history!

    • @494949david
      @494949david 10 років тому

***** Not really , the names were given to the slaves, they didn´t come from europe, it would have been too *expensive*. They have Irish and European names depending on who was the person that was selling them, sadly.

My Grandpa "Bernie" (1899-1977), who immigrated here with his family as a baby: the trans-Atlantic crossing, being in mid-winter, would have been the time of the very worst storms! -- the short days and long nights making things even more depressing! -- took something like three weeks. It was in mid-February of 1900 that they had arrived, and were processed. Happily, for them: the entire process only took a couple of days, at the most. "Here's to a new beginning! New hope! New freedom!"

All countries have an abundance of cheap labor but none rose to dominance like the USA. something else caused that to happen. Africa was in a state of tribal warfare before European Colonialism. The continent stabilized and black populations increase under white rule not decreased.

Well, not all of them had such terrible times onboard those ships. German lines, like Hamburg Amerika and North German Lloyd of course didn't have very nice accomodations for immigrants. They crammed the passengers into large open berth dormotories. With some other lines, like the White Star Line and the Cunard Line, they had better accomodations, including separate cabins.

"Wubububuubububu" -- Curly's anthem for "The Three Stooges"! Moe and Shemp were his real-life older brothers. Their parents were immigrants from Lithuania, named Sol and Jenny Horwitz -- soon to be "Americanized" to "Howard". "Disorder in the Court" -- 1936: it was Jenny Horwitz (their mother, 70-ish) whom Curly fell into, his arms "accidentally" wrapped around her! Said she, in return: "Broadlane 9-9-7-2, after five o-clock!" -- big smile on both their faces! o:-D

@bosnmate820 Very interesting! Im Romanian myself, and i wasnt aware that some romanians in 1906 spoke Saxon, the german language you speaking of. My grandpa is still alive, and will be 90 this year, i should ask him more about it. He knows German, but thats becouse in WW2 Romanians fought both sides, first with the Germans then agains them.
And as Theclowcard said, im proud to be an immigrant. God Bless the USA

Very wisely said, even with all the spelling bees. America IS the golden land, or at least WAS. If there's anything I love about America it's the cultural and racial respect and the neverending American dream. I say that and I'm not even American XD
