i love how snails just simply exist and their owners are like “if this snail isn’t living a life of complete and utter luxury, then what’s the point?”
that’s the mindset pet owners should have with all animals :’)

Haha yes! I just literally saved a Burgandy snail from a super arid environment. They belong in Europe. So cold and moist environment. I found my lil' dude living in an irrigated desert basically. Our temps hit 110 today too. It is in a large and moist jungle enclosure now (high humidity, cold, and lots of leaves for shade from my mulberry tree)

I’m still so frustrated that a person in this community had the audacity to mail you a live animal without your knowledge or desire to have one. It is unfair to toss an exotic animal with a rather long lifespan onto a stranger! None the less, I love your Slushie updates

Awww I love snails. My old school (like OLLLDDDD xD) had two snails in a tank at the back of the class. They where so well kept and where there for years after and years before I was there. I think it was where my love for exotic animals came from. I was always looking after them and making sure they had the best care! ^-^

If you'll be looking for a second snail, I highly recommend a lissachatina reticulata, which has same care needs and gets to similar size. And since they are different types, they won't crossbreed and won't keep up laying eggs, which is very exhausting for snails. Self fertisize is very rare, so you may not ever need to be taking care of eggs.
I also see you giving him a cumber and tomato, which aren't very nutritious. Courgette, sweet potatoe, mushrooms are good base, but it is important to give them variety of food. Very good source of protein are grounded pumpkin/sunflower/flax seeds.
And if you have such a big enclousre it would be nice to put couple of cuttlefish bones in other places so that he can always find one. And it should be put hard side down. Snails doesn't like eating it if it gets moist and brownish, so when it happens, it is best to change it to new one.
If I see correclty you're also putting porcellio leavis in there? They are often used as clean up crew, but can be very protein hungry, so their population should be watched over and if there's too many of them, remove a few, as they can go for snail and starts biting on him.
Your enclosure looks very aesthetic and quite safe i'm sure he'll appreciate it. :D

    • @Emiology
      @Emiology  2 роки тому +33

      Thank you :)
It was cucumber, red pepper and carrot, not tomato. He often gets potato, courgette, mushrooms, carrots on a more regular basis, but this was filmed on a Saturday and we do our food shop on a Sunday, so he just got a small selection of what we had left in the fridge at the time, but he gets a mix of what we have in the house at the time, I don't eat courgette but I always make sure to buy one for the snail and the rats :)

I have 2 garden snails (I used to have 3, one recently passed) I really want to give them an awesome setup like this one day. They are in a tub because it’s easier to maintain humidity but I hate the limited space it has, I can’t go all out for them like I do with my other animals. I do have a spare tank but it has no lid and don’t have a good mister apart from a broken spray bottle.

For snails you have to dig around the soil often to check and dispose of eggs which would disturb a drainage layer I think! Otherwise I would’ve added one ☺️ The spider plant I left in the pot and the other two I think will have to be replaced every few weeks as they’re eaten!

@@emilyfentem6571 The problem is that any pets, but especially small animals, are often abandoned because people think any patch of grass is every and any animal's "natural habitat"; people also keep several snails and don't do anything to stop them from multiplying; and they can escape bad enclosures, especially the small babies.
After these snails are outside, they will keep multiplying and devouring all sorts of plants, more than any native snail in the US does and the damage they can do to agriculture and biodiversity is very difficult to stop. In Florida and Hawaii they're trying to eradicate them at the moment.

Snails can be absolutely fine on their own, they aren't actually social exactly. It's competition for food that makes them more active. If you do want anothery sutralis there's a MeWe group for buying snails from breeders. Please don't get from a pet shop EVEN an invert shop. They don't know what they're doing with snails. I got some from a well known invert shop and they both were unhealthy. One even died after 2 weeks of getting it. 😭
Also, in future when putting a plant in, take the soil from the plant away and give the roots a rinse to make sure there are no nasties.
I'd also add an extra calcium source as it is quite a large enclosure. But I'm so glad he's doing well!! x

Don't worry I don't buy any of my pets from pet stores! All my inverts I get from experiences sellers online, I was just trying to explain that most snails sold in pet stores don't tend to be anything other than Fulica.
I'm not sure if want a second snail / another Suturalis, they wouldn't be my first choice of snail as they don't have much variety, I always had my heart set on getting a completely albino GAL when I was ready to, and as I don't have the space for another tank, perhaps that will have to wait until after Slushie :)

@@Emiology As someone in another comment mentioned, marginatas (both ovum and saturalis) are a special case where they CAN be housed with other species, which would be the achatina achatina and lissachatina reticulata. I'd go for a retic in this case, since they are one of the more healthier snail species, and they do come in albino body and can have a (mostly) albino shell! Achatina Achatina are also an option of course, but they tend to have health problems (respiratory infections) and grow suuuuuper slow.

Hey, I don’t know if you’ll see this, but I’ve been looking into getting mice recently. I happen to have an old 16x16x30in mesh reptile cage and was wondering if that would make a good mouse enclosure. If not I can totally get something else, I want them to have the best lives possible!

how do you keep your springtails and woodlice from over populating? I used to have them in my tank and they wouldn't stop breeding so I had to completely get rid of them

I wish America allowed giant African land snails. There usually illegal almost everywhere here regular snails are somewhat legal but it’s illegal to release them.

Its because they are highly invasive and some of them will eat smaller snails + the babies will enjoy the shell from other snails too. "Regular snails" are probably local snails living in your country naturally :)

Though it’s impossible to kill a living creature without causing any suffering, freezing is recommended to dispose of snails.

Hello, you might not see this comment as the video is 4 months old, but if you do I would like to congratulate for this awsome terrarium, but also leave a suggestion.
The heat mat is an awfull heat source, why?
Because they only emit infrared c ( infrared being the radiation we call heat) when around 1% of the suns spectrum ( the diferent types of radiation it releases that compose it's total energy) is infrared c.
A big part of the infrared it releases is infrared a and b, all of them having different properties and interactions with living beings.
I don't know much about snails but light (being energy) sustains all life on earth, and all or most living being are naturally exposed to it, therefore their bodies will have a use for it. Reptiles, amphibians, birds and mammals have been proven to have positive impacts such as hormonal control and vitemin sintesis, and of course reptiles and amphibians also use this energy to control their body temperature.
Besides that, having that poor heat soure underneath the terrarium doesn't recreate their natural habitat in any way as the energy source comes form above. When infrared a and b waves are reflected by objects they convert to infrared c, and then you better recreate both infrared a, b, and c wavelenghts of wich their bodies will use( including even ours), speacially the a and b as the c can't really pass through melanin.
I'm sorry for such a long post but as someone now with some knowledge I just wanted to make it clear why you should change that heath source( the best one that comes closer to match the suns infrared spectrum is the halogen lamp) and of course the same argument goes to uv and visible light, all found in nature, and although it seems strange and further researching is necessary it has already been proven to many inverts that they have a use for this sources of energy.
That said you're doing a good job and got the right sipirit, and it's great that you recognize the value of that animal when most people wouldn't think in investing for such a space for a snail.

While I appreciate all the benefits of heat lamps for other animals, the general consensus when it comes to snails is to not use them. They don’t bask under them like reptiles would and there’s more potential for the enclosure and also the snail to dry out, having a heat mat on the side or below helps to heat the soil and create humidity, heat above would possibly cause the snails to burrow into the soil and hide. Based on this advice that’s why I use a heat mat for this enclosure but definitely recognise the benefits for reptiles and my gecko gets her heat source this way ☺️

@@Emiology Ok, as I'm not familiar to snails i didn't have these ideias in account.
It was great to share our ideas though I'll just leave an open thought, that because an animal doesn't necessarily bask it doesn't have to mean that they don't us that energy through for example refelcted rays that travel down to the forest flor.
But I do understand your arguments and experience which I don't have with snails, it was more of an ideia worth considering and following research on if further studies come out.
All said thank you for the reply and this sort of mini debate, as foward thinking keepers we always need to strive to recreate nature as closely as possible! ( said by Jhon Courtney Smith) and it's great to see the evolution in care provided even to snails.
