      it's called D78 but was actually built from 1979-1983

    Just shows you. Keep it simple. These old trains use old, electro-pnuematic control, and DC motors, and are lovely old relics. I do hope they can be kept going for as long as poss, can't see today's souless tube stock, surface stock, or mainline units running as long. Frank Pick and WS Graff-Baker would be proud of these old trains, and rightly so.

      I do believe the 72 stock have a lot of character - great old trains which may well end up running the longest on the Underground's history of tube stock

      They do make all the right noises, and the Island would benefit from rheostatic brakes with the consequent reduction in wear on the brake blocks.

      the s stock is full of too many computers, all you need is a motor and a switch

    Ha, those two old gits in the depot are still there now. And they haven't aged as well as the trains :-P

    Yeah they still do have a little piece of London - the D78s! Also, they haven't been sent to the scrap heap, they're being preserved.

      @@trainman665Two of them remain on the island, one at the Steam Railway, the other at the "House of Chilli" at Arreton. Two have returned to the mainland, currently in Wales, where they could see further service, either there or at the Epping-Ongar Railway. Another two also returned to the mainland, but went for scrap. The LT Museum also has a full-length 1938 Stock Unit in preservation, which didn't go to the island, and remains with its original interior fittings and green/red seats.

    I don't remember the British Railway livery on these

    • @ianmcclavin
      @ianmcclavin 8 місяців тому +1

      They were painted into Network South East livery just before being transferred to the island in 1989, along with the internal refurbishments, seating changes, fluorescent lighting, etc. On the demise of NSE, all of the serviceable units except one (some had already "died" by then) were painted into a blue and green based "dinosaur livery," reflecting the fossil discoveries locally. The remaining unit was painted back into LT red, and as the dinosaur guise proved unpopular, the rest eventually became red again, and stayed that way until their eventual withdrawal at the end of 2020.

      there are no 72 or 73 stock available and there wont be until the new tube for London is rolled out which is not happening until the mid 2020's

    • @tomedy_official
      @tomedy_official 7 років тому

      gonna replace them with former midland metro trams,
      the only reason they use underground stock is because there the only train that can fit in the Ryde tunnel.
      And if the do use trams they'll open up some of the old lines!!
