As for the meaning of "sisu", you got it right. It's the spirit of gumption and perseverance. It's an old Finnish word, so there's not necessarily a perfect translation in other languages, but I think the English use for "grit" comes close. Etymologically it's the same as saying someone "has guts", as the word "sisu" is related to the finnish words "sisus" or "sisällä", which mean "inside" or "in". Meaning, someone who has sisu is not just "an empty sack" of a person, but someone who has "that something" that makes them go and keeps them going, indeed they have "spirit".
Gary needed a dumb movie to appease an old liberal with drug-induced brain damage. Go listen to some David Irving and then watch a movie like Sisu again.
Finnish man here, definitely check this movie out! Sisu translates as courage, just look at what we did to the Vikings and later the Russians during the winter war.
Ngl, Im sick of Nazis being the bad guy in every. f-ing. movie. If it's based on a true story (like the polish boy scouts who fought nazis) = cool. But there are legit worse villains in history (or at least others who havent been done to death)
It’s in so far based on a true story in that Germans were fighting Finns in 1944 in Lapland. Finland was originally an ally of Germany, but it did make peace with the allies in 1944. But there were still German soldiers in Lapland at that time (fighting the Soviet Union and protecting some mines). Despite the Germans agreeing to leave peacefully, did the situation under pressure from the Soviet Union lead to an open war in which the Germans used a scorched earth tactic.
The wife and I went to see it opening weekend on Sunday. There were about 6 - 8 of us in the theater. So not quite as bad as yours. :) But yeah, it was amazing! I had a little issue with the plane crash. I think it would have made more sense if it had been more of a skid than a slam. But other than that, I could not recommend it enough.
I think they implied that it hit a bog and that saved him but yes, that was the most unbelievable part of the movie. My wife hated the way the plane crashed and said had it skidded in that it would have been more grounded in reality.
This movie came out like four(?) months ago here in Finland and I'm ashamed it took me this long to go and see it. Much to my surprise, I sat in almost completely full teather - out of 300 seats there were approximately only 10 or fifteen at most that were not filled. This is unheard of for a domestic film around here. Loved every minute of this film and highly recommend it to anyone wanting to see a good '80's style action packed revenge film with straightforward plot that delivers exactly what it promises in the trailer. I still can't believe this movie was made by my own country men!
Interesting fact: There was a real life finnish sniper called simo häyhä. He was known as the white death & had over 500 kills in ww2. His story is mind blowing, no suspended disbelief required.
The trailer for The Outlaw Johnny Black (2023) also dropped. Even the TRAILER pokes fun at how many genre blends the movie incorporated in itself (it makes fun of the trend of genre blends by adding as many as it possibly can get away). It started in 2018 with crowdfunding, if memory serves. Also, The Secret Kingdom (2023) also dropped a trailer. Its CGI looks good for a lesser known entry, and it's just a straight up kids movie, which is rare these days.
It is a frickin Awesome movie. I watched it twice. It was great. I don't recommend many movies but this one is worth it. Too bad it's not in more theatres.
That T-55 and the dude fighting marketable nazis who had barely a skirmish with the finns late war, instead of soviets who were a much more serious and merciless threat and were in a war with Finland is a force strong enough to pull me out of any movie.

For months, by himself, and in the cold mountains, he hold the Russian army from an invasion.
When ask how he did it, he said: "I just did my job".
I saw it a few days ago it’s great! I’m going to watch it again today.
I already thought this looked good after seeing the trailer, and now I'm looking up times to go see it. Thanks, Gary! Tell us how you really feel 😂
It was good, trailer is accurate.
Can't you see that from his face? The guy looks like he's just hit the pipe.
Gary needed a dumb movie to appease an old liberal with drug-induced brain damage.
Go listen to some David Irving and then watch a movie like Sisu again.
Yes we know Communist love killing freedom fighters...we get it.....
My jaw dropped when i first saw the trailer. Glad to hear it lives up to it.
I love your reviews of everything. Your channel is the best thing pretty much on any media platform.
Had this on my watchlist ever since I saw the first trailer for it, thanks for the review!
The Finnish Punisher
Finnish man here, definitely check this movie out! Sisu translates as courage, just look at what we did to the Vikings and later the Russians during the winter war.
And now you have Sanna Marin or what is her name?
Sad times...
80s was the best decade.
90 minutes of just pure awesomeness. And he even has a cute little puppy dowg!
The dog doesn't get killed does it?
@@joeyservo Do you want to know?
Damn, they got a T55 in 1944. Anyway, sounds great, will watch
I am a big fan of Finnish history, especially that period - sounds like fun. Thanks for the tip!
I agree with you . For fuck sake find different baddies
Ya, Scandinavian movies/series are found gold. Seriously, they are great at cinema. I'm watching Wisting right now on Prime, 1st season pretty good.
I’ve 100% with you on the reality programming. I want escapism. I’m all set with viewing more reality
I thought the Fins were Allied with the Germans .. but would not fight outside the Finnish designated area ?!? I call this movie Bravo Sierra !
The movie is set during the Lapland War (15 September 1944 - 27 April 1945), which was indeed fought between Finland and Nazi-Germany.
@@kevinintheusa8984 Great minds think alike. :)
This movie makes Rambo look like a documentary
I don't know, John Wick 4 was pretty awesome. But I do really want to see this movie too.
The way all the trailers end with a voice shouting the title "SISU!" reminds me of those Sega commercials. "SEGA!"
Saw the trailer at John Wick 4 and went to it opening weekend with a buddy. Loved it! Very brutal and crazy with a Tarantino feel.
"I'll just remember something."
I can relate to that.
As soon as this releases in the UK it'll be in my list to see!!
me too
Absofreakinglutely!
Also, Robots (2023) and Jovi and Lou (2023) looks like fun as well.
Didn't The Walking Dead: Dead City and The Meg 2 also drop trailers?
It is a frickin Awesome movie. I watched it twice. It was great. I don't recommend many movies but this one is worth it. Too bad it's not in more theatres.
Any movie that makes Gary this giddy is worth seeing.... believe that
Love you and your excitement!
One of those movies you can see again with different friends just to see their reactions
That T-55 and the dude fighting marketable nazis who had barely a skirmish with the finns late war, instead of soviets who were a much more serious and merciless threat and were in a war with Finland is a force strong enough to pull me out of any movie.
