I find that having a package of baby wipes next to me when I work with oil pastels is very handy. Saves having to jump up to go wash your fingers when you want to change colors. I have many different brands of oil pastels because they all have different consistencies and uses. The driest brand is the cheapest, Pentel and the creamiest is the most expensive, Sennelier. Most other brands land somewhere in between those two. My Paul Reubens don't sweat like yours were doing, but then the ones I have don't look like yours either. I'm thinking it may have been too warm where you were keeping them. I try to keep mine far away from any heat sources or sunlight. They are an interesting medium to work with. I use the paper stumps to apply the oil pastel to my pages in all the smaller areas and blend with the paper stumps too. I don't seal my page, just leave the book open for a few days and it soon dries to a hard finish on it's own. Have fun experimenting with this new medium.

Shelly, your experiments are better than me at my best. I think you could paint the Mona Lisa with Crayola. You are amazing!

I think she could paint a masterpiece with rags wrapped around the ends of dowels using cans of house paint. Shel has "the touch" and I love watching her work her magic.

It was crazy to see this because I just started my first coloring page experiment with oil pastels for a background yesterday. I'm not happy with it so far but I'm still working with it so we will see. I would love to see more learn with me videos

I agree that using the zest or gamsol before blending would have a better finish. Thanks for sharing it! ❤

Thanks, Shelly! I’ve wondered about oil pastels, and now I have a better idea of how they work. They look tricky, sticky, and a bit messy but fun! “Learn with me” videos would be a great complement to your already awesome channel 😊

I also put the oil pastel on a glass palette and pick up with a blending brush. Works really nicely to get light even layer

These are very beautiful oil pastels! They look just as good as the Sennelier oil pastels! I would definitely test them out in your books before you use them on a page because since they're oil based, over time the oil can soak through to the other side of the page. Or you could just use them on single sided pages. Thank you for sharing this video!😊❤

Hi Shelly, I was really excited to see what you would come up with when I saw this video! The oil pastels you swatched out are so beautiful and intense.
I have used my Mungyo oil pastels with a paint thinner and paper stump in a Hannah Karlzon book. Didn't feel the need to use a fixative. Oil pastels seem easier to use when the background is open. I prefer using them with oil based pencils and filling in any small spaces directly with the pencils.
Looking forward to more oil pastels ideas when you try them out 😊

It is totally normal for them to be very oily. You can use a blending stump, your finger or even wax paper folded in a triangle of sorts. They are best when blended out. You are amazing in everything you try.

I was thinking that one of those silicone tipped brushes might work well for these! Especially since you can get pointed ones that will help you get in those tiny areas!😊

Thank you for this tutorial! I've been eyeing oil pastels, but they seemed a bit difficult to use. Your demonstration changed my mind ❤ I've ordered the Paul Rubens and can't wait to give them a go!

I think it’s the quality. I used them in high school art class (100 years ago 😊) and they were creamy and lovely to blend, they were true colors. When I heard ppl speak about Prismacolor that’s what I thought of, though they aren’t the same kind of blend (the Prismas are wax base). Anyway, that’s just my opinion on them, happy coloring!

Good video. I have oil pastels but am new to adult colouring and haven’t thought about using them for backgrounds. Regarding the oily ness of the pastels I find the Paul Rubin’s one are a bit like that but it is a bit dependent on climate.

    Hi 👋 lovely piece
What liquid did you use to blend the oil pastel with brush ?

  • @mizzy_chiara
    @mizzy_chiara 8 місяців тому

For blending, I've also seen artists use silicon brushes, usually with an oil, linen oil I think. It gives the feeling of oil painting I imagine, but I never tried.

Instead of finger blending, use tissue paper. Facial tissue paper or toilet paper works great
