  • This Hewlett Packard DeskJet 932c from 2000 still works flawlessly to this day and is built like a tank! The best part is that the ink cartridges are huge compared to modern HP ink cartridges!

Same with my HP Deskjet 990cxi. I bought it in 1999 and it still works perfectly - even with Windows 10. These printers were built to last!!

@bbishoppcm I believe this was also one of the first HP DeskJets to be a "dumb" printer with no internal memory, relying entirely on Windows or Mac software to print. Thus they could not be used directly from DOS anymore.

The blue light you can see when printing is an automatic paper sensor - it detects the type of paper being used and adjusts printing accordingly.

Embarrassed to say I bought this one new. Anyway, it's now making a kind of buzzing noise when it prints. So if you still (12 years later!) have this printer LMK.

I have the Deskjet 990cxi and like your 932 it's built like a tank. I bought it in 1999 and it still works flawlessly (and it works on Windows 10). Even though I now have an HP all in one inkjet (Envy 4500) I have no intention of retiring my Deskjet. Thanks for this video.

Nice video, but this is definitely not one of the first "color inkjet" printers ever made. I bought one of these new in 2000, and yes, it was one of HP's last "well built" printers. The carts are huge, however, they run down quickly, due to the high waste printer engine. HP's first color inkjet came out in 1987 and was branded "PaintJet." The first inkjet printers were the ThinkJet series, and were very small and reliable. This is one of the first that could be considered "photo quality" though

This printer is the one and only printer I've ever used.
Reasons have already been cited in the video - large cartridges for ink, sturdy construction, high quality prints, etc.
However, I find this printer to be a lot like Windows XP in that when it works, it works GREAT. But when it fails, it fails HARD. The biggest hassle is how to fix mechanical problems, cos the damn thing is NOT easily disassembled (I'm still looking for a way, via a service manual or tutorial, which is how I ended up here).
Not sure I can endorse the cost of the ink, though. I think today's prices are just the result of greedy sellers capitalizing on the rarity and high-yield of the ink. Remanufactured inks for half the price can be suitable, but it depends on whom you get them from. Some are decent, others are total crap.
But despite all the hassle and headache, it's worth trying to keep these beasts going, cos modern printers are complete crap. At the very least, even if modern printers produce quality prints, the ink capacity is ridiculous. Three thimbles worth of ink per cartridge? Please. End up using 5 cartridges just trying to print out test pages. And with MY print projects? I'd be lucky to see an ink cartridge last beyond a handful of double-sided pages.
This printer needs to be resurrected as a benchmark standard.

We have a Deskjet 940c. It was used to print architectural drawings and was used for so long the ink sponge in it got over-filled and started to leak. Plan on fixing it though, and it will be our third working printer.

You can get refill kits on ebay that have enough ink to refill them fully about 10 times for about $13. Takes about 5 minutes to do

I wonder if that blue light allows the printer to determine if the ink cartridges and heads are alligned correctly. What kind of iMac is that?

That's an ok printer for what it is I got this model myself I found it sat out by the curb well there was nothing wrong with the printer except it needed ink and you're right it is expensive for those cartridges but it's better than the newer hps which I have one but I don't use it anymore so I replaced it with this one.

2000? I wouldn't call it one of the first color inkjet printers. I have a deskjet 600C from 1995, and I still think there were many before that.

@Lachlant1984 The blue light is so the printer knows if the heads are aligned correctly. The iMac is a 400 MHz PowerPC G3 with 512MB of RAM. It is the later model with the slot-loading DVD-ROM drive.

I bought this printer at a Thrift Store over 10 years ago and it's still going strong. Love the Big refillable ink cartridges. I don't believe this printer will ever die. LOL. They don't make them like they use too anymore.

The blue light is a light so the cartriges can "see" what they print with the laser.

I managed to find a brand new one on eBay that someone just never took out of the box and actually used!
I had one of these ages ago after my dad gave it to me. At that point it was 10 years old and had printed over 80,000 pages and the ink waste spitoon globbed up interrupting a motor and a sensor beyond reasonable repair (I was 13 at the time) so it malfunctioned and I had to say goodbye :(
Bulletproof printers though, the 900 series. Can't wait for my new eBay purchase to arrive.
