    I've had good luck using an old bicycle tube to clamp fretboards to necks. I clamp each end in place, placing one end of the tube under the headstock clamp, then pull the tube tight and wrap it around the neck. When I get to the bottom, I take the clamp off and put the end of the tube under it. There are plusses and minuses to everything, uncontrolled squeeze out is the negative on the tube approach. I cover the edges of the fretboard with tape and that helps keep it clean.

    You know Tim! I really admire your commitment to free content and no money grabs, but really i wouldnt mind if you did, all i care about is your content being pure like it hass always been, no memes, no stupid faces, no click bait, no super diluted content. You have always done that amazingly and I appreciate all you have teached me over the years from following your channel.

      You mean I shouldn't jump up and down and yell and scream excitedly about every mundane thing that happens, then pound an energy drink?
      Cheers man. That means a lot. I experimented with that a few years ago and really felt yucky doing it. I do however have several good, small companies I continue to proudly promote, like TotalBoat, Natural Varnish, ThunderLaser, Vectric and Avid CNC, but we're beyond a "pay to play relationship asnd just support each other when we can, how we can :)

    Man those CNC’s are just an incredible tool. I have a display guitar I’ve been building on an off for years and need to router a channel in the neck to put some LED’s in it, and a CNC would make the job so much easier lol. That’s a beautiful guitar, the real Ebony looks incredible. You’re an amazing craftsman man, you make some super unique guitars!

    Man I always get the factory reject ebony fingerboards. Sometimes they've got a knot hole that causes a big warp, sometimes they just have a little crack you can fix, but most of the time they're put to the side for the crime of being too beautiful. I don't understand people who want their ebony to be perfectly black. If you want it to look like a perfect manufactured material, just use something like richlite or some other artificial material. I have a little box full of $10 reject fingerboard blanks with some of the most beautiful swirling wispy grain I've ever seen.

    It's funny, I have those exact same black clamps I bought for my first scratch build in '98, before Stewmac started carrying them. I found them at Kmart as clamps to hold a bike to a roof rack. I saw them and thought they would be perfect to help hold the fretboard centered while clamping. They worked so well I bought all I could find (like 20). A couple years later I saw them for sale in the Stewmac catalog for more than double what I paid, they were only a couple bucks each at Kmart 😁

      @timsway Thank you! I literally stared at the firewood pile and thought "well that looks pretty, but it's not tone wood. But that Tim guy makes instruments out of closet doors. I can make a bass from willow. So it's more than appropriate to use a Tim Sway pup in it. And man you ship fast. I expected like Monday or something. Nice!

    • @timsway
      @timsway  8 місяців тому +1

      @@MrTeijo lol. perfect. the only thing you have to worry about with using firewood, etc., is strength. Basses have a lot of string tension, so that willow may want to bend under the pull and you might need to reinforce it a little more than maple, oak and other stronger woods. You can do this by laminating some stronger wood with it or hiding carbon fiber, graphite, etc., inside the wood by routing strips in there and filling them with strong stuff :)

    I wonder how you would improve on the Rickenbacker 12 string head stock. I've read and seen a lot of people complain about how tuning them and their tuning stability in general are a pain in the patoot.

      I have an awesome group of folks over at patreon.com/timsway that get early views of my videos and a monthly behind the scenes update video. In no small part, everything on my channel is patreon supported. I'm not sure I understand what you mean by "patreon supporter build"? Like it would only be visible to patrons?

    • @masa-bs6qe
      @masa-bs6qe 8 місяців тому +1

      @timsway a build paid for by your patreons members for your patreon members as a raffle/ giveaway type thing.
      Also is there a option in patreon to pay a subscription yearly? I didn't see it in there
      Hope this clears up my question

      @timsway  8 місяців тому

    • @timsway
      @timsway  8 місяців тому

      many, infact the first instruments I ever built were fretless. You just need to take care to sand it very consistently flat and smooth. That's it!
