Italy.
Various shots of American troops and tanks parading through streets of Rome and past the Colosseum. Cheering crowds greet them on their route. Church bells rings, British and American flags fly from buildings. Various shots of General Mark Clark riding through crowds in a jeep. More shots of crowds and parade.
Various shots of angry crowds outside insurance building in Piazza Venezia where Fascists are hiding. Italians wave their fists and break down the door, antifascists hurl a bomb inside. Italian Carabineri are sent in to stop vigilante action.
More demonstrators knock down door of Radio Station converted into Nazi headquarters. As the collaborators are forced into the street they receive rough treatment from crowds.

My Grandfather made the entrance into Rome as a member of The U.S./Canada First Special Service Force. He was attached to Gen Mark Clarke's 5th American Army.

Yes they were, before the capitulation in september 43.
The resistance rose up and brought a new government. Most Italians hated Mussolini after the war started.
No! they changed after the arrest of Mussolini and dont forget the Partisan.
They were until 1943 when the Italian king decided to surrender to the Allies and arrested Mussolini. Mussolini later escaped to the Northern part of Italy (under German control) and established the Italian Socialist Republic but the Italian Kingdom then fought on the side of the Allies.
Not after September 1943 when Mussolini was arrested.
General mark Clarke was so obsessed with not letting any other force be seen liberating Rome ,that instead of cutting off the German retreat and defeating The Nazis ,He headed for Rome and thereby cost many lives of the allied soldiers in Italy ,
Yes, capturing Rome was symbolically important but the Nazis were not routed, they pulled back to new positions, the terrain of central Italy suits a defender well.
It was Churchill who persuaded Roosevelt to attack through Italy the soft underbelly because he feared mass casualties if they tried landing in France in 1943 which is what Stalin wanted. At least though it lead to the quick collapse of the facist government in Italy. Hitler had to move more units into Italy when the Italian army changed sides.
I know My Grandfather had a high regard for his Commanding officer Robert T Frederick. Not so sure about Clarke though Because he said they lost a lot of Men when they took Monte La Difensa.

I'm a Catholic but as a child I never liked Pope Pius, he turned a blind eye whilst the Vatican helped Germans escape Europe!

Hearing this I wounded whose propaganda was better, the Germans or British. The British hated that the American’s liberated Rome without waiting for their Army to catch-up. It shows in their report where they don’t mention the American army….
The British were ordered to stand aside and let the Americans enter Rome, the reason given was that many American soldiers had relatives there so would be better suited for the task. They did ask a couple of British Royal Engineers, an officer and his sergeant, to enter the day before the Americans would and set up phone lines for them, then withdraw from the City. When they entered, a reception Committee of Roman dignitaries were waiting and pleaded with the soldiers to accept their surrender because they were terrified the Germans would return and kill them. The officer refused and told them why. The Romans argued and pleaded, but the officer was eager to get the job done and went off to start work and left the sergeant to calm things down before joining him. The pleading went on and on until the sergeant finally cracked and accepted their surrender by accepting the symbolic Keys of Rome before leaving to join the officer. Not sure what happened next, although the officer wasn’t that happy. The officer was Robert Maxwell [ Ghislaine’s father] and the sergeant was Roy Staniford [my sister’s father in law]. We only learnt of Roy’s wartime exploit at his funeral when his old regimental colleagues turned up and gave a speech to the mourners.
Oh dear! Read your history. The vainglorious capture of Rome led to many thousands of allied deaths by letting the Germans reform further South. Mark Clarke , one of few Generals criticized by his own soldiers.. Ask the Texas Rangers.

The British were more aggressive in bombing Rome because the Italian Air forces helped Germany in bombing London.

Rome was not only liberated by US Vth Army, but also by the French expeditionnary force in Italy. That is the reason why general Alphonse Juin sat in general Clarck's jeep beside him.
