The brilliance of neil youngs simple yet haunting almost hypnotic acoustic work and lyrics combined with his voice is amazing looks simple but almost noone can achieve what he does with just a few simple acoustic chords and lyrics
Your tutorial unlocked this recording for me- not that I play it as well as you, but I am on the right path with it and appreciated your freeing me to improvise myself instead of trying to get each part exactly “right”. Thank you! Best tribute band name ever, too!
i am so blown away - amazed - in awe of yr playing. & you make it look so easy. & then yr demonstration of the hammer ons on the d chord & the way you finger it - along w palm muting- is a lesson in itself. & sounds so pretty! you are a master! thanks for sharing yr knowledge & playing.
Cortez Cortez this is awesome. T hank you for teaching us. This specific take is a favorite of mine and have been trying to learn it, but haven't had much luck. You have just provided that opportunity for me, thank you.
Neil playing slightly sharp for “cinnamon girl”, “old laughin lady” then slightly flat for “Ohio “ . He’s tuned slightly off this something Survivor used to do - they used to play slightly sharp listen to “eye of the tiger” or “can’t hold back”, also bands like Journey used to do this eg “don’t stop believin” This was a very 70s 80s thing to do. Probably discovered by tape to tape recording when the tapes can be slowed and belt width would make a difference to speed of play and changes the key. As fans who Neil is an analog head guy
ITs been the best EVER way to learn the essence of NY ! I too am blown away by the talent, not just of your playing..but how you speak the lesson, show the lesson, and don't want any money? WOW..I took lessons for years and years, but my teacher was teaching Neil songs without the feel that I get here.Come to Nevada County for a concert someday! Leslie -:) and you need a tip jar!!
Great Job Cortez! You’ve got the Neil vibe going. Best acoustic version I’ve heard. I get that you are a BIG Fan too. I just learned this song because of you. Thanks dude.
A big fan, Hello again, I have a new computer and youtube prime. I had to re-subscribe. That work you did on Hank is amazing! Thanks for all of your videos and spot on Neil's playing. I upgraded my guitarsenal to include a Furch Dread (red) and an Eastman AC622 (Sitka over Flamed Maple). I am practicing every evening and your videos are always in my rotation. Thanks, Bless and keep on Rocking Brother!
Thankyou! It sounds great. I’m just confused as to why Neil’s chord shape is different when he’s playing it live in that iconic video he’s playing in the folk music lounge place
@@cortezcortez739 not sure tbh I’m kinda a beginner. But In the video he’s using his middle finger to do the pull offs and hammer ons and your using your ring finger
@@TheRealLarryFishermando you mean the d chord because Neil’s plays it with his pointer and ring finger then uses his middle for the hammer ons and pull offs, and in this lesson he uses his pinky and pointer fingers for the d chord and ring finger for the hammer ons and pull offs
Hi, is this tuning called D modal or is it drop D but 25% higher on the middle strings ? I’ve heard Neil refer to D modal multiple times to play cinnamon girl. Even in the video your doing the tutorial on at the end
Hi, no every guitar can produce harmonics. Be sure you are in DADGBD tuning, then put one of your fingers over the 7th fret (over the metal), don´t press down but very lightly touch all the 6 strings with your one finger. Then lightly strike all the six strings with your strumming hand. I hope it works
Your guitar is out of tune. The D is sharp and likely the others. Also never sand down your top because it is dry wood which soaks up the new finish and the tone is flat. It may sound good to you but 40 years in this business and I have seen and played thousands of guitars and have learned a lot. Talk to a professional luthier before you do things like that.
Well I had a look/listen. It's not out of tune relatively but it is indeed not in standard tuning. This was cbanged so people could play along to the Neil Young version of this song (see link to youtube). The sanding of the top mod is only a mod that i would do on this type guitar, definitely not a real Martin ;).

Thanks for your very nice compliments! I'm very glad these video actually help people in learning this great stuff. Take care!
That 'slapping' style is Neil. Not 70's, but forever.
He gets that BASE BEAT SO MAGICALLY ! And you get it to but all the other notes are a little loud. Drop double D makes a magic sound!!!
Thank you. Very helpful and just what i needed.
Glad this video helps you out, Frank. Be well.
You did it! I’ve been looking forward to this forever. Thank you.
Yeah i had to find the right time for this. Have fun with it

Yes Neil plays double dropped and slightly sharp and sometimes slightly flat - it’s quite fascinating nd always sounds unique

Sweet😁👍
Thanks!!
Do captain Kennedy please
How do I tune the strings 25% higher?
Take a digital tuner. Or with an app on your smartphone. I use Pano tuner, which is free.
