Glad you like Aesop, this whole song is about him regretting putting away his art. He went to art school and focused his whole early life on art but ended up getting into hip hop and stopped drawing/painting.

    [Verse 1]
    Used to draw
Hard to admit that I used to draw
    Portraiture and the human form
    Doodle of a two-headed unicorn
It was soothin', movin' his arm in a fusion
Of man-made tools and a muse from beyond
Even if it went beautifully wrong
It was tangible truth for a youth who refused to belong
No name nuisance, stews in a bedroom
    Oozing a brand new cuneiform
    Barely commune with the horde
Got a whole gray scale ungluing his world
Might zone out to the yap of the magpie
    Unseen hand dragging his graphite
Cross contour, little bit of backlight
Black ink after a Bristol to baptize
You can't imagine the rush that ensue
When you get three dimensions stuffed into two
Then it's off to a school where it's all that you do
Being trained and observed by a capable few
Back in New York, five peeps and a dog
In a two-bedroom doing menial jobs
Plus, rhymin' and stealin' and being a clod
    Distractions free to maraud
I left some years a deer in the light
I left some will to spirit away
    I let my fears materialize
    I let my skills deteriorate
Haunted by the thought of what I should have been continuing
A mission that was rooted in a 20-year affinity
In rickety condition with an ID crisis
Nap on the front lawn, look up in the sky, it's…
    [Hook]
Shapes falling out of the fringe
All heart, though we would've made cowardly kings
They will chop you down just to count your rings
Just to count your rings, just to count your rings
And there were colors pouring out of the fringe
All heart, though we would've made cowardly kings
They will chop you down just to count your rings
Just to count your rings, just to count your rings
    [Verse 2]
    Used to paint
Hard to admit that I used to paint
Natural light on a human face
Stenciled fire on his roommate's bass
    It was blooming addiction
Amiss in the pushing of pigment
Book like a tattooed pigskin, look
    Pinhead kids of the minute
Drank Kool-Aid from a tube of acrylic
And it grew up into linseed oil over linen
Joy to the poison, voice of the resin
Capture a map of the gesture
Back up, add a little accurate fat to the figure
    Redo that, move that inward
Zinc white lightning shoots from his fingers
Studio strewn with illusion and tinctures
Stay tuned for the spooky adventures
You can't imagine the stars that align
When a forearm starts foreshortening right
Or a torso hung on a warping spine
In proportion reads as warm and alive
Routine day with a dirt cheap brush
Then a week goes by and it goes untouched
Then two, then three, then a month
And the rest of your life, you beat yourself up
I left some seasons eager to fall
I left some work to bury alive
I let my means of being dissolve
I let my person curl up and die
Eating up his innards, an unfeasible anxiety
Has brutally committed to relinquishing his privacy
Aligning with the trials of the anti-Midas
Nap on the back lawn, look up in the sky, it's…
    [Outro]
I'm getting sick and tired of never understanding
Where is the truth you promised?!

Listening to it properly now, it’s gonna take some time decoding and understanding Aesop’s lyrics but the production and performances are top-notch.
The storytelling on Blood Sandwich, emotion on Get Out the Car or the stellar breakdown of the beauty in making art on Rings. All awesome (and just a few highlights mentioned amongst others).

Chop you down just to count your rings.
A subliminal metaphor about how little people care about each other referencing someone cutting down a tree just to count the rings and for no other reason.

Aesop Rock is very unique each album he has evolves quite a bit, and has high points. While it can take a few listens to start to break down the lyrics but that is very often the case with wordsmiths. I would recommend the following. No Regrets - (story telling), None Shall Pass- (general social statement and excellent partner ship with a talented artist) Daylight/Night light - (Iconic dichotomy), Fast cars, danger, fire and knives (often over looked but excellent song)

Probably the best breakdown of the entirety of what makes up an Aesop song of any reaction I've seen. It's impossible to listen to an Aesop song and process the meaning, it's an onion you have to peel over many listens, but you hit on the other aspects that get lost in his unbelievable wordsmithing. Good shit man, you earned my subscribe by actually caring for the art.

He's got two decades of brilliant material, solo, collabs, features, dude always kills. Check Hail Mary Mallon, his collab with Rob Sonic. Their flows compliment each other so well.

Aes was walking on water with this shit, love seeing these 40 year-olds bringing the heat. This ain't random shit at all - he's describing artistic passion, inspiration and process.
I reckon this track is actually kind of about how he lost his passion for rapping, by comparing what he spits on the beat to painting on a canvas. But he just kinda vanished from the scene for an age when Camu Tao died - so this album was really one for the old fans, from the heart. Like, when he says 'all heart though we would've made cowardly kings' I reckon he's talking about his old crew (Def Jux) and how they never really blew up back in the day; like, hip-hop just wasn't ready for them, and never really embraced them as 'real' ('they'll chop you down just to count your rings'). Metaphors and double-meanings, so sick - but you gotta know, ya know?

Yeah the beat is nasty. Aesop is a world class metaphorical sorcerer. The lyrics are about how his art was suffered from his anxiety and depression. One of my favorite Aes songs. "They will chop you down just to count your rings" refers to the annual rings in trees that tell their age. Basically saying people will cut you down for no other reason than to see what you're made of.

He did go to art school, so I wonder if this is about his getting burnt out with all the technique being valued over creativity and love for self-expression.

You know how when you watch LeBron play basketball and you think "Wow. He might be the best to ever do it; he's the best I've ever seen." My favorite is watching people hop on that same brainwave with Aesop.

if you like real hiphop go look at the orphanage (Aesop slug .blueprint. illogic. eydea. byanary star. silla. sadistic. sage. ) all these dudes are super good. every single one should be known just as much as any rapper.( atmosphere aka slug is my favorite. then binary star . eydea is a legend best freestyles ever. rip.) slug just has like over 200 realy just great songs. with good storys and beats.
