Glad you like Aesop, this whole song is about him regretting putting away his art. He went to art school and focused his whole early life on art but ended up getting into hip hop and stopped drawing/painting.
Naaaaaaaaaaaaaa x100000000000000 hes painting with words now
So no regrets is actually about his regrets?
He's recently gotten back to his artistic side and has focused on drawing and skating over music. He posts a lot of his art on his instagram stories.
@@mgmabone8143 He also posts a lot of his work in his music videos.
I hope he never paints and just keeps rapping so eloquent and hard
[Verse 1]
Used to draw
Hard to admit that I used to draw
Portraiture and the human form
Doodle of a two-headed unicorn
It was soothin', movin' his arm in a fusion
Of man-made tools and a muse from beyond
Even if it went beautifully wrong
It was tangible truth for a youth who refused to belong
No name nuisance, stews in a bedroom
Oozing a brand new cuneiform
Barely commune with the horde
Got a whole gray scale ungluing his world
Might zone out to the yap of the magpie
Unseen hand dragging his graphite
Cross contour, little bit of backlight
Black ink after a Bristol to baptize
You can't imagine the rush that ensue
When you get three dimensions stuffed into two
Then it's off to a school where it's all that you do
Being trained and observed by a capable few
Back in New York, five peeps and a dog
In a two-bedroom doing menial jobs
Plus, rhymin' and stealin' and being a clod
Distractions free to maraud
I left some years a deer in the light
I left some will to spirit away
I let my fears materialize
I let my skills deteriorate
Haunted by the thought of what I should have been continuing
A mission that was rooted in a 20-year affinity
In rickety condition with an ID crisis
Nap on the front lawn, look up in the sky, it's…
[Hook]
Shapes falling out of the fringe
All heart, though we would've made cowardly kings
They will chop you down just to count your rings
Just to count your rings, just to count your rings
And there were colors pouring out of the fringe
All heart, though we would've made cowardly kings
They will chop you down just to count your rings
Just to count your rings, just to count your rings
[Verse 2]
Used to paint
Hard to admit that I used to paint
Natural light on a human face
Stenciled fire on his roommate's bass
It was blooming addiction
Amiss in the pushing of pigment
Book like a tattooed pigskin, look
Pinhead kids of the minute
Drank Kool-Aid from a tube of acrylic
And it grew up into linseed oil over linen
Joy to the poison, voice of the resin
Capture a map of the gesture
Back up, add a little accurate fat to the figure
Redo that, move that inward
Zinc white lightning shoots from his fingers
Studio strewn with illusion and tinctures
Stay tuned for the spooky adventures
You can't imagine the stars that align
When a forearm starts foreshortening right
Or a torso hung on a warping spine
In proportion reads as warm and alive
Routine day with a dirt cheap brush
Then a week goes by and it goes untouched
Then two, then three, then a month
And the rest of your life, you beat yourself up
I left some seasons eager to fall
I left some work to bury alive
I let my means of being dissolve
I let my person curl up and die
Eating up his innards, an unfeasible anxiety
Has brutally committed to relinquishing his privacy
Aligning with the trials of the anti-Midas
Nap on the back lawn, look up in the sky, it's…
[Outro]
I'm getting sick and tired of never understanding
Where is the truth you promised?!
This whole album is amazing, dude. "Shrunk" is in my rotation constantly.
It's one of the best hip hop albums ever created.
Water tower.
That song is incredible.
Agreed man. This album is like a peep behind the curtains. Start to finish it's just great.
Listening to it properly now, it’s gonna take some time decoding and understanding Aesop’s lyrics but the production and performances are top-notch.
The storytelling on Blood Sandwich, emotion on Get Out the Car or the stellar breakdown of the beauty in making art on Rings. All awesome (and just a few highlights mentioned amongst others).
Chop you down just to count your rings.
A subliminal metaphor about how little people care about each other referencing someone cutting down a tree just to count the rings and for no other reason.
Aesop is deep
Third time I’ve watched this, you really need to do more Aesop. Would love to watch your journey into some of the best hip hop ever produced. His whole catalogue is fire. Aes is a legend.
Heard this album so many times I was waiting for "I'm getting sick and tired of never understanding. Where is the truth you promised?!"
i was anticipating that part as well
And he also produced the album.
One of my favorite Aesop reactions!
Fyi for anyone interested chopping down a tree and counting the rings inside the trunk is how you can tell it's age. Love Aesop. Loved this review! Please do "Winners take all" 1 of his BEST!!!
:-:Hehehe #Hurrah
Yeah, that line always blows me away.
Aesop Rock is very unique each album he has evolves quite a bit, and has high points. While it can take a few listens to start to break down the lyrics but that is very often the case with wordsmiths. I would recommend the following. No Regrets - (story telling), None Shall Pass- (general social statement and excellent partner ship with a talented artist) Daylight/Night light - (Iconic dichotomy), Fast cars, danger, fire and knives (often over looked but excellent song)
Always cool seeing someone react to something you enjoy so much. Got my sub. I love this album man. Was great to hear him be less metaphorical, and straight forward in his message without losing any sustenance in his word play.
Hate to reply on my own post, but would love to see you review Mystery Fish from this album.
Come to the live streams
Aesop Rock "Daylight" or "None Shall Pass"!! You'll love these.
Aes' is a master of nuance. Such a way with words, damn.
Think it’s dope when someone flips a word? How bout a bar? Check out Daylight/Nightlight that’s a whole track flipped so many ways.
Dope reaction Aes is a legend.
React to Aesop’s track None Shall Pass
Good review man . I can relate . I love art and was consumed by other things and kind of fell away from it . Aesop is a lyrical genius .
Probably the best breakdown of the entirety of what makes up an Aesop song of any reaction I've seen. It's impossible to listen to an Aesop song and process the meaning, it's an onion you have to peel over many listens, but you hit on the other aspects that get lost in his unbelievable wordsmithing. Good shit man, you earned my subscribe by actually caring for the art.
Yes! Love it anytime I see someone discovering Aes Rock. Vocabulary unrivaled, and his metaphors and imagery are ultra vivid. He's got two decades of brilliant material, solo, collabs, features, dude always kills. Check Hail Mary Mallon, his collab with Rob Sonic. Their flows compliment each other so well.
Subbed @ "buffoonery"
'This is impressive, I love hip-hop!..' sunscribed right there, i'm rhe exact same way, hear a dope bar, hook or a sick beat and i get that same feeling and exclaim it the same way, I love hip-hop!
Yes! this artist is amazing!
"...then a week goes by and it goes untouched ... then two then three then a month, and the rest of your life you beat yourself up".
This lyric hit me hard when I first heard it several years ago. Has been bouncing around in my head regularly ever since.
Bruh this whole album is 🔥🔥🔥🔥
glad u appreciate aesop, man. been one of my favs for years. check out some sage francis too. 👍
Love seeing Aesop getting the respect the dude undeniably deserves. Mystery Fish from this album is my favorite hiphop song of all time, that song is dope as fuck.
You should look up the hip hop vocabulary chart, I think Aesop had the largest vocabulary of any emcee. People should check it out. Most peoplesfavorite rappers aren't as high up as you think. This was a college study
Labor Days is a classic. Any jam off that is great.
Top 5 hip hop song of all time.
Aes is a legend
Agreed
This is an awesome first request for Aes. The man is out of this world and very slept on.
respect my fellow hip-hop head
Its his VOCABULARY, something most rappers do not have
Hes talking about what its like being an artist.
:-:I absolutely FREAKING LOVE AESOP. #Warriors
👇
Excellent review. Thank you.
Thanks for watching!
Solid review man 👍🏽🙏 Makes me happy seeing people appreciation Aesop.
Aesop rock is one of if not best lyricist ever. I suggest listening to Malibu ken, which is a colab album with Aesop and Tobacco. My favorite song from that has to be acid king or churro.
His best song is definitely Daylight. You should react to that!
Alien Pumpkinhead That’s a great song but HARD no from me. I feel like he has DOZENS of songs that surpass that track.
Yung Dymebag I’ve been listening to him since he came out. It’s mine and many other Aes fan’s favorite.
My favorite song by far is no regrets because he proves if he wanted to rap in a more traditional style he could destroy 98% of other rappers. Hes a different breed.
Disagree.
I’m a Metal fan, never really been into rap. The only rap I’ve ever really liked was the fort minor material. But when I discovered Aesop rock I was swarmed into a new whole world. It’s amazing I can’t get enough of it.
“Big Bang” is another really dense one. It’s from his earlier stuff, but that just makes it more impressive because he can’t hide behind the music; it’s just him.
Instrumental on point lol ya he did that to like the whole album lol.
welcome to underground hip hop
I grew up listening to aesop my brothers dad seen him at a gas station in Washington State and got a picture.
I love the anti midas line, it's subtle but basically saying everything he touches turns to s***, I can relate with that.
He is talking about tree rings, "they will cut you down Just To Count your Rings"
Been listening to Aesop for years dude is one of the best lyricists I've listened to he's a talking encyclopedia wish more people knew who he was
This song really hits home as someone that used to love drawing as a kid and was totally engrossed in the process of it, when making my own comic strips or just simple doodling.
Think Aesop did a stellar job in showing how unique and special of a gift it is but also how crushing the regret can feel, when you end up not using it to your fullest potential/extent.
Why did to stop drawing?
@@RudeLifeX No particular reasons, really, but I would hopefully like to bring it back. Even if it’s just simple sketches to start off.
Been listening to Aesop Rock for 20 years. Even seen him live. Everything you said is on point. The dude is insane. I'm glad you enjoyed him. You should check out Daylight/nightlight. (Two separate songs but both correlate with eachother)
Come to the live streams
'39 thieves' or 'Fumes' both fire
Aesop rock songs? Acid King, Suicide big gulp, noone shall pass, dorks, zero dark thirthy, blood sandwich...too many
Aes paints the most detailed picture
He's the king of the underground
Gopher gutz - hands down, my favorite. Gotta check it out
:-: Lmbo #Hurrah we Warriors in here lol.
I love that he doesn't understand how "count your rings" is about cutting down a tree to see how old it is, not championship rings.
"We're famous".Aes and EL-p, before run the jewels, these two were the best back to back.
Get to learn one of his early albums float. Thats some legendary shit right there. Each song hits you right in the feels.
Especially the song basic cable.
"Zinc white lightning shoots from his fingers". It's sounds foreign but it's too tangible for that.
His album "fast car danger fire and knives" has a lyric book with it....
This song is all about different forms of art
90s hiphop at its finest.
I first listened to this song after reading The Pudding's study of rapper's vocabularies where it was determined that (based on the sample size of about 200 rappers) Aesop Rock had the biggest one.
Listening to his music it's not hard to understand why.
He’s one of those guys who makes music that’s sounds like less of a song and more of an expirience
Thank you.
@6:55 he nails it.
Aes was walking on water with this shit, love seeing these 40 year-olds bringing the heat. This ain't random shit at all - he's describing artistic passion, inspiration and process.
I reckon this track is actually kind of about how he lost his passion for rapping, by comparing what he spits on the beat to painting on a canvas. But he just kinda vanished from the scene for an age when Camu Tao died - so this album was really one for the old fans, from the heart. Like, when he says 'all heart though we would've made cowardly kings' I reckon he's talking about his old crew (Def Jux) and how they never really blew up back in the day; like, hip-hop just wasn't ready for them, and never really embraced them as 'real' ('they'll chop you down just to count your rings'). Metaphors and double-meanings, so sick - but you gotta know, ya know?
more aesop reactions!!!
the impossible kid album was an instant classic!
pudding.cool/projects/vocabulary/index.html
This article gives some perspective into how complex his vocabulary is compared to many other artists. The writer did a comparison of hundreds of artists from all genres, comparing "unique words" that the artists used in their albums.
Daylight and Bazooka Tooth is where it's at. You should peep some Brother Ali, Eyedea, Sage Francis, and Atmosphere too..
Aesop is the god
Aesop Rock - None Shall Pass !!!! You would love it
Do Aesop Rock ZZZ Top, Cycles To Gehenna, Leisureforce, Zero Dark Thirty, Blood Sandwich, Mystery Fish or Sword Box
Nah don't listen to the bozos saying you're an idiot for not reacting to Aes more. You do whatever you wanna do, you know that. Though if you ever decide to listen to something else of his, I recommend Coveralls from his new album (though most of the songs are very, very good). Also, I highly recommend Snakes and Birds by Deca. Keep up the good work
Idk what you talking about but this bozos are doing exactly what I want people to do. Expose and express themselves. They probably don’t check the channel before they type either. So I get some good laughs in at the lack of IQ on this platform.
Hell yeah
I could tell by the intro music that you weren't ready for Ace. But I'm glad you tried.
Haha yup the Intro Music is The clue huh 😂
@@RudeLifeX what the hell does that mean? Lol
Thank you so much for reacting to Aes!!!
Check out The Harbor Is Yours!
some of his best songs are.( big bang . 9to5ers anthem. none shall pass. no regrets. comenmercement at the obedience. and then ill be ok with slug is one of my favorite s
React to Now by Eyedea bro!!
Yeah the beat is nasty. Aesop is a world class metaphorical sorcerer. The lyrics are about how his art was suffered from his anxiety and depression. One of my favorite Aes songs. "They will chop you down just to count your rings" refers to the annual rings in trees that tell their age. Basically saying people will cut you down for no other reason than to see what you're made of.
Dudeee Aesop rock is so fucking good. One of the best musicians I’ve seen in a while. It’s really deep but in a real way, not like a lot of other peoples pieces. A lot of the songs he writes really hit hard.
Edit: I also like the songs Tuesday from the Malibu Ken album, and Kirby which is about his cat (it is very cute)
Aesop is mad talented. Extremely underrated
got to do mystery fish
Also just a fun fact: Aesop has over 7300 unique words in his lexicon or "rap vocabulary". Nobody else comes close
chop down tree to count the rings to see how old it is if you didn't know
He did go to art school, so I wonder if this is about his getting burnt out with all the technique being valued over creativity and love for self-expression.
You know how when you watch LeBron play basketball and you think "Wow. He might be the best to ever do it; he's the best I've ever seen." My favorite is watching people hop on that same brainwave with Aesop.
*Kobe. But I get what you’re saying my g
Zero Dark Thirty
Please react to uncluded ( Aesop rock + kimya Dawson) tv on 10 it's a song about his friends mom dying in a plane crash and they found out while watching the news at his house
Aesop Rock - get out the car
get out of the car is a good one. its on the same impossible kid album. about his friend passing.
Rings i.m.o is his best song.
Why you say that
@@RudeLifeX, it’s just a good vibe. I also like Rogue Wave and None Shall Pass.
if you like real hiphop go look at the orphanage (Aesop slug .blueprint. illogic. eydea. byanary star. silla. sadistic. sage. ) all these dudes are super good. every single one should be known just as much as any rapper.( atmosphere aka slug is my favorite. then binary star . eydea is a legend best freestyles ever. rip.) slug just has like over 200 realy just great songs. with good storys and beats.
Best song for me is the 95ers anthem
This is all his music pretty much in terms of the comment of not hearing certain words that most people have to lookup in a dictionary to understand.
Good shit! Do more Aesop Aceyalone MF DOOM and RTJ please!
Dope review chief but please, for the love of god, spend the few dollars it takes to remove the kinemaster watermark
Naw it’s not that big of a deal to me. Thanks tho
@@RudeLifeX honestly that was like the most alpha response ever.
Aesop Rock - None Shall Pass
plz
He's the most "lyrical" rapper
Hail Mary Mallon- kiln
Thank me later
Rude.. gotta get on Aes. Dude's the actual greatest of all time and you're pacing these reactions. I appreciate your coverage but there is so much to discover especially with a brand new album out.
Maaaaan this is the new aesop.....he.s been doing this since you were in diapers
Fugettaboutit.
