Hmmm, interesting. This video has me rethinking how to construct the desk I need for the living room. I don’t consider myself a DIY’er but your videos have given me a lot of confidence to tackle some of my own projects. There are a lot of great woodworking channels on UA-cam but very few aimed at the limited tool and non workshop owning audience. In addition, the imperial measures used in many of the American videos are a barrier. Cheers and keep the videos coming.
OMG would you believe it - I have wanted make one of these for ages, they are approx £100 plus for one of these. I will be making one soon!! Thanks for all the tips!!!

Whilst building my wardrobe, I too insert wood glue into my screw holes/joints when building with mdf. It is a great tip. Charlie, I just love your channel, yours was my 1st go to when I was inspired to build my wardrobe. Thanks a 🌷🌷🌷
Hi Deanne - great to hear from you again! Aw, thanks for that. Can't tell you how much I appreciate comments like that!! I must say, from all your comments it sounds like you're a pretty accomplished DIYer these days! Ha, yes I decided to upgrade my outfit with something new and branded. Got a few polo shirts as well! Not for sale as yet as I can't imagine anyone would want to buy one 🙂 Thanks again!
@@CharlieDIYte My hubby keeps on praising me, so I must be doing something right. I will send to you pictures of my wardrobe build and I thank you for inspiring me to actually do it. I started out with the mere basics of tools and used Homebase (great advise from you) and B&Q to rip the long sheets to size for the main carcass build. I plan to make a video when all is finished to give praise to you Charlie, Peter Millard (10 minute Workshop) and Andy (Gosforth Andyman)... supporting the best (imo) of British in showing the everyday man and woman how to do good DIY. I thank you Charlie, my wardrobe was my biggest project and now I own Router, Bosch Saw with Guide Rail, jig saw, multi-tool and Ryobi Double bevel mitre saw. Channelling out rebates, like you said in your wardrobe video made it all so much easier to get the job done more accurately and I can now make drawers, which a year ago, I thought to be impossible. ♥️🐣🐥😀
Brilliant. I was trying to figure out how it wasn’t falling off the front. And then you delivered the pin reveal. I know your philosophy is DIY without all the complicated kit and huge workshops, but I would say that if a DIYer wants to treat themselves to a more complicated power tool (beyond combi drill and impact driver that most of us have now) I’d go with Router. So useful on so many levels.
Great solution Charlie. That's what I love about making our own stuff. Creative problem solving. Also really enjoyed the video format. Retrospective storytelling and informative with the sometimes laboured format of every detail we often see elsewhere. Have a great week.
I'm was just looking for some kind of folding table solution and look what just popped up in my subscription feed! Since I don't need the shelves I was thinking more in the line of a hinged tabletop that could be raised up from a hanging down position with a support leg made of some sheet material that could be swung out until it was perpendicular to the wall, right under the tabletop the support leg would probably be as long as the tabletop extended out from the wall when it was raised and much more narrow at the floor. But this hinge-less design is simply just a lot more elegant solution to the problem and the shelves are just an added bonus. The thickest mdf board I've got at home is about 15 mm and that is probably a little to flimsy to use for a folding table, and since a trip to the hardware store is needed anyway I'll probably try to use 18 mm birch ply instead of mdf. Thank you for the inspiration and the good ideas!
You're very welcome Niklas - good to hear from you and thanks for taking the time to tell me about your project. Yes that 18mm sounds like a good option. You just need to make sure that your pins are proportionate in diameter to the thickness of the desk, and therefore strong enough - not that they have to be too strong as they're only guides after all.
Hi Charlie, just seen your videos this morning. Good idea for space saving desk. A thought came to me while watching. The two strips of wood that you slot the desk under to keep it down while using the desk - why not put a long piece of MDF plank across them to make in effect another shelf?! I saw you take the lamp from the shelf above to put down onto the desking, but with the plank going across the unit on top of those two strips of wood on either side the lamp or pens etc can stay down there
You, Sir, just solved one of my problems in doing my own fold down hingeless table! Been wrecking my brain to make it cost less than the initial plan (cuz those lil thing really costing alot once you total it ups😅)
Love the 'T-shirt', do you sell those? Desk is amazing, that would work well in my flat. Thanks a bunch for sharing this. Well done for achieving 33K followers. Simple DIY at its best!
Great design and who cares if it isn't immaculately finished, it is for a child who know doubt do not always look after things. However the design behind the desk is what is genius and it can be applied to other desks that people can spend more time on and finish to a higher standard should they wish. Great job!
It's an amazing way to make the desk flush with the rest of the bookcase: I picture a wall of inbuilt bookcases with a desk like that, and instead of two side rails the desk slides into a "pocket" created by a very low-sitting shelf that would hold monitors and a desk lamp. It'd be a fantastic solution for a home office in an apartment (or anywhere where space is tight): when you finish for the day the workstation just disappears.
Thank you very much for the great inspiration for my Murphy desk. Finished it a little while ago. Used your table locking construction with a few optimisations. Great job 👍
Hey that's great news. Its awesome isn't it. What did you use for the pins? That's where I'd most struggle if I were making this again. Thanks for the comment 👍
Charlie you are a very clever dicky, The ideas you come up with are amazing. Your videos breed confidence, and your workmanship is excellent. Keep producing these great videos
Ingenious. I love it. Couldn't you just make it wider and taller and even add depth to it? Or does your son just want something totally different? It's really good of you to give it away. Thanks for the video.
Great idea mate, just working out some ideas for my sons bedroom, I don't have the depth to do this in a timber clad wall (concealed) but Iv bought from Ironmongery before so may try them.. eitherway enjoyed watching, thanks
great project. I would maybe have used an epoxy glue for the metal pins but I guess there is no real pressure on the glue joint as it only stops the pin from sliding out
Hi Charlie, Do you remember the approximate dimensions of the desk? I wanted to make something similar for my daughter's room. I realise it's a while since you made this, so no issues if you don't recall. Great channel. Cheers
Thanks Robin - really appreciate that and thanks also for generally watching my vids! The boxes with holes in them have the kitchen ceiling down lights in them. It's not so much a heat thing as the LEDs emit almost no heat compared to the CFLS I originally had, but as I was filling between the joists with a Knauff acoustic roll insulation I wanted to keep the down lights away from the insulation and give them a little air circulation. My attempts to insulate the ceiling from sound were pathetic as the Knauff does very little. I should have used Rockwool, followed by an acoustic floor board and not screwed it down. 🙄
Great idea but the paint will wear off on the door where it sliding in and out. Will will have to repaint it all the time. Maybe a hard wearing vinyl would fix this issue?!
Great video, good design and as always executed brilliantly. I'm making a bed soon for a customer (in a box room in a semi) it's going up on the wall across the width of the room and because the room is so small it will impede over the window opening. There's currently a single bed in there I've been told I can dismantle and 'use bits of'!! Any advice?!? A little aside here too Charlie.. has anyone mentioned a passing resemblance you have to Gordon Ramsay ?(much better looking than him I hasten to add).
Thanks Martin - you're not the first one to mention the Gordon Ramsay resemblance 😂 The bed is a tricky one. When you say it's going up on the wall, what do you mean? I probably need to see a picture to comment properly - feel free to email one to me at charliediyte@gmail.com
I don't think so. I meant to talk about the router more in the video. When I bought my De Walt router I was a bit overwhelmed with it at first but it is an invaluable tool now. I use it for everything from rebating locks, putting an ogee edge on skirting boards and of course this. If you're buying one do a bit of research because you could buy a 1/4 inch or 1/2 inch shank router. The 1/4 inch is lighter and easier to use but the 1/2 inch shank is sturdier more powerful and produces more accurate cuts.
It's a good question though, that was the first thing that struck me too; I don't have a router, but I do have a lathe, so I thought I could do the same using some aluminium or steel channel and machine some rollers to fit; sounds expensive of time, and it is, but my time costs me nothing! It's always fun to use what you have .
Thanks Charlie. I think I'm definitely going to get one as I'm moving to a new flat soon and there is so much I want to do that a router will really come in handy.

I thought the exact same thing. Also, imperial measuring is soo confusing, glad I found this video.

I just finished making a desk like this based on your design! It was perfect for my daughters room. Thank you for a fantastic idea.
Very clever, I thought it was a bit dodgy before you revealed the metal pins, but that had me sold, really nice work.
I really like it. The pin idea was great, a simple solution for a clean look
Thanks Douglas 👍🏻

Thanks. Good luck with that 👍🏻
I've been looking at folding desks too and I'm so glad you shared your hinge system, it looks perfect. Another great video 👍
Cheers mate. Really appreciate that 👍👍😏

GENIUS! I'm so doing my desk extension like this!
thx. i love the ideea. i was looking for a folding desk with closing mechanism like yours.

Thanks! He wanted something totally different. He's now got a stand alone desk, which has reduced the space by his bed, but that's what he wanted.
So clever and loving the space saving feature. Very much needed in a kid's room that needs to grow with them for a while ^_^

great project. I would maybe have used an epoxy glue for the metal pins but I guess there is no real pressure on the glue joint as it only stops the pin from sliding out
Fair point. What sort of epoxy would you recommend?
araldite or something similar. Just the stuff they have in diy shops.
very interesting cleaver problem solver ! thanks for sharing
Awesome and simple
I must try to do this! Wonder if something can be managed without a router for the pin rails.
I'm not sure how you'd do it - maybe with a sharp chisel 🤔
Brilliant! I need this very thing.
Glad you found it useful 👍

Great and smart idea for the folding desk but you could pay a bit more attention to the finishing (head sides finishing and painting)
I agree. It only had one top coat and we rushed it a bit towards the end. But I did acknowledge it wasn't perfect.
little bits of hindsight like the tip of lacquer/varnish for the surface are always useful, though, thanks!
