However, in the case of Lunge he came to the conclusion he's incorrect after getting testimonies and checking Johan's room while Near had it all fixed by Mello's stunt. Also Lunge is both thinking and action while Near's only capable of sitting in his HQ and waiting for the perfect moment to do anything.
Reading people should go to Lunge, he had such an adaptive mindset and always tried to think how the murderer would think, which allowed him most of the time to predict the next move of the murderer. Just because he suspected Tenma, he is not stupid. The thought of a split persona is a really well thought and concluding theory by Lunge, since everything lead to Tenma, while Tenma was being the good guy. I can also say, Near has bad writing, since his reasoning to suspect Light is very poorly explained. Lunge is smart, but Near is smarter. I don't think he would make the same mistake as Lunge thinking that Tenma is the mass murderer, he would suspect him at the start, sure, but he would quickly find out that someone else is doing the killing.
