Learning some new handling skills on Roger; the Royal Enfield Himalayan.

- This is a few stumbling first attempts at improving my handling skills such as a walk around and side stand swivel with the Himalayan, 200kg is not a small bike!
Massive thanks to Dave & Steve at Riding in Action for their time and patience.
A channel I used for reference, hints and tips was the great @advmotoskillz .

Great stuff, all those things are well worth practicing. A little advice put the camera with the sun behind it.
Having passed my test in the 70’s when all the current mod steps weren’t a thing i couldn’t do any of these manoeuvres now with my bike. Back in the day i enrolled on an RAC/ACU course at 17 and so the Department of Transport test was a doddle.
I've seen a few "hold my pint, watch this" moments :) I agree with your statement regarding bikes, if we all wrapped up in cotton wool and stayed away for any potential harm life would be a bit boring. :)
Exactly! 😊
Learnt a few thing watching this, thanks
👍👍
I just wonder how many smart ass bike riders looked at this and said "yea yea nothing to it" when infact they have never ever done it ??
Me being one of them having riden bikes since I was 12 years old NOW 70 JESUS WHERE DID THAT TIME GO ????????I had a go with my Bema 1200 G.S. BLOODY HELL WHAT A GAME THAT WAS BEMA 4 ME ZERO L.O.L........... My only advice with any of this is RELAX ! Nice up load keep up loading cos I honestly keep learning !!
Thank you Allan. 😊
I've subscribed as I feel quite safe riding with you. After 50 high mileage years in cars I've seen so many bike accidents most down to car drivers but nearly all avoidable, sadly I see so many YT videos of bikers insisting on their rights right up until they get knocked off though car drivers are just as bad at that.
I always wince when I see anyone swing a bike around on its sidestand Charlie, I'm not sure they are designed with this in mind & I have seen sidestand mounts that are lugs welded directly to the frame tubes rip out & leave a nasty hole in the frame ! So be careful & keep this activity to a minimum, its probably less likely on a bike the weight of your Himmy ? But I have a 350 RE Bullet frame from the 90's with this exact damage, I will get round to repairing it at some point.
Noted. 😊
Here in the US I've never seen this, but it looks like the UK has Motorcycle EMS - I think that's pretty neat and makes a lot of sense, especially in a large city.
Maybe Charlie will have a chat with one for the channel some time .
I know a few paramedics who ride motorcycles, including my Son.
I did a skills day at Alconbury airfield with IAM, I picked a bandit 600 up using their method and it was great to know I could do that. I’m 61 now and have been riding since I was 17. After a gap of several years, bought a 125, took my practical test on it in 2004 and bought a second hand zephyr 550 restricted for two years. I didn’t have to do the MODs as passed just before they came in. A couple of bandits later and now a RE meteor 350, great bikes. Nice videos and editing.
Thank you, and welcome to the Channel. 😊
RIGHT!.....Inspired, i'm off to the garage to spin the bike around on the side stand. Save me huffing and puffing not manually doing a 6 point turn. If you hear a scream its went wrong 😃
Be careful!!!! 🚑
Looked like you and Roger had it sussed out. Well done on your lifting skills too.
Well done Charlie love your vids keep them coming . I am also in full support of you and all your NHS co workers for the sterling work you all do , im with you all the way .
Thank you Michael. 😊
thank you for another excellent video
Brilliant stuff Charlie - well done :)
Thank you 😊
Greetings Charlie, another great realistic video. Being a first responder is not what someone does, it's who they are. The hours and pay does not matter, but does matter. Learning, having, and practicing new skills is beneficial, even if they are never needed in life. And finally, life is a terminal disease with no cure. So I encourage everyone to live like there is no tomorrow, someday you'll be right. Godspeed in your travels.
Thank you Larry. 😊
Well done Lass, practice makes perfect. !!
I wish you well Charlie on your Dragoon rally.
Fantastic! From your job, you must know that you never stop learning and these skills will either get you out of the cacky or just make like easier with your bike. Just a thought, as Roger has a centre stand then it's a lot easier to pivot a bike around either leg of this. Have a great time at the Dragon, I should be there but work might get in the way.
Really hope you're enjoying the himalayan. I've had my big license 24 years and bigger bike's as long. Got my himalayan in 2021 and ride it more than any other bike I've had. Keep thinking of trading but then can't stand the thought of it not there in my garage . I ride it to work most days and all year round. That saying 4 wheels move your body 2 wheels move your soul. Anyway hope your glad you got into bike's and enjoying it as much as I do.
Hi Rab, I am definitely enjoying both bikes , they make perfect garage companions. 😊
@@restdayrider they do.
I think you did a great job, and you taught me something to practice. I was a Paramedic for 10 years, and it was a great time of my life. Thank you for your service. Ride Safe
Thank you. 😊
Greetings from Vancouver Island Charlie picked up a new 2021 Himalayan last August to add to my 2 Triumph Tigers, Thunderbird, and Suzuki Rm collection ive been racing and riding 50yrs but its nice to see females riding more than ever being from UK 40 yrs ago nice to see your Videos around the UK on your travels look forward to see more Tc have fun 👍
Thanks David. 😊
I would honestly hate to have to take my test again after all these years of riding I am sure I would fail infact I know I would fail !!
so well done you for getting through that ordeal you should be very very proud of yourself as I am sure your family are .
Thank you, it was stressful but I'm actually glad they make it fairly tricky to get through to get a bigger bike. 😊
Vegas in Charlie! Great work.
What's your take on fluorescent riding jackets/ vests.
Hi Ed, the official research jury is out on how much hi Viz increases your actual visibility to car drivers, however, on a personal note if the weather is horrendous and normal visibility is reduced, I have my day glow orange jacket that goes on. ,😊
Hi, just wanted to say I think your channel is great full of things I'm going through, 52 mid life crisis lol got 750GS and only been passed from Nov 2022 , keep up the adventurous trips , well done 👍
Thank you Daz. 😊
Good to see you practicing. As they say, practice makes perfect. A good one for you to try is slow riding while seated, then standing both on and off road in a straight line and in a figure 8. This will help with your clutch and brake control along with improving rider balance. I have just gotten back on the saddle after 18yrs of not riding and I chose the Himalayan to kick start my riding again. The last time that I rode before getting the Himmie was with the Flying Gunners Motorcycle Display Team between 2000 and mid 2004. I practice on Salisbury Plane as its on my door step.
Wow! That's some history and experience there! 😊
Good exercises! I also have to practice so now I have no excuse after your movie. Gotta learn that side stand flip... 😉Have you bought yourself a new helmet?🪖 I did too when I bought the KTM bike a little over a year ago and love the helmet peak when riding in sunny weather.
Hi! Yes I did buy a new helmet for Roger specifically, it's more an Adv/ Mx style , that peak definitely helps with the sun in the face! 😊
Wow going on the Dragon my royal Enfield is all packed we are coming up from Sussex on Friday see you there safe journey.
See you there Graham! 😊
Great vid Charlie. Hopefully bump into you at the Dragon Rally
Come say Hi if you see me bedraggled and holding a cider!
Whilst I appreciate we have all got to learn how to pick a bike up (we will all drop a bike eventually) Anyone that layed my pride and joy down like that on a rough surface would need the skills of a paramedic afterwards. Who the hell do these people think they are ? They can do what they like with their own bikes but this was bang out of order !
I asked them to. 😊
have a good weekend 🙂
Great idea's, love your 'can do' attitude. As a Himalayan rider I had I entered comments when you first purchased Roger. Went through all your video's again recently and bought a Meteor, now 'Himmi' has a smaller brother. These bikes are very underrated, but the fortunate have discovered their charms and capabilities. Enjoy your weekend !!
That's wonderful! They make ideal garage companions. 😊
I hope all is well, you give out inspiration to all bikers so well done! I also want to say thank you for doing your choice of career, you all do a fantastic job and deserve more in wages and recognition . Enjoy next weekend, I know you will 😊
Thank you Pete. 😊
Good job done Charlie, practice makes perfect, good to see you out and about, it’s been a while since I was up at Wroughton air field , go kart racing with my son, all the best 👍
Thank you 😊
Absolutely fantastic, gives other women and us weedy bloke's encouragment to try hobbies that you may think to risky or dangerous 😀🤙
Greetings from down under. Good to see you,re back. Love your work.
Hi Keith, I'm back! 😊
Wow. Great moves. Your video's are so inspiring and positive! You call you're attemps stumbling, but I think that's what it takes to get more skilled, just go for it and persist and that's what you show in you're video's. Thank you Rest Day Rider. You rock!
Thank you Daphne, that's so nice of you. 😊
Good luck at the Dragon Rally
Thank you 😊
👍
Best of luck on your Rally this weekend Charlie. Well done on the bike lift.
Thank you. 😊
I did the Dragon Rally years ago and it snowed. We were so miserable we had to book into a hotel. I'm not a wimp by any means but it was just too much. Have a great time , can't wait to see the footage💚
The weather forecast is chilly, but not unmanageable, and I'm taking a hot water bottle! 🤣
Well done you and thank you for your duty as as a para medic, hope you get your well deserved rise❤️
Thanks Gerry. 😊
“Braaaaaaap” - you got trouble with yer understays girl? 😜
🤣
It is lovely to see an analytical mind, at work.
You have a very chance of keeping the pink, squishy stuff inside , as l managed, during my 70 years of on and off road riding..
I wish you something similar !
good chance.
(note the no longer analytical mind, at this end!)
Thank you David. (It comes to us all. 🤣)
Good stuff, Charlie! Enjoy the Dragon. Take care. Up with the NHS!
Thank you.😊
Lol Charlie. My daughter is a nurse & she calls bikers " organ donors".
We do disagree I'll add as I've been riding more years than I care to mention & I still have all mine, but I ride more for the joy then the adrenal.
I call riding " meditation at speed". When I'm riding I'm the most focused on the NOW then at any other time so hyper focused on everything that's happening around me. Besides no one ever said life was safe & I've heard that golf is ever more dangerous 😬.
Don't forget that my offer of some proper craft cider still stands. You'll likely be riding right past Ross on Wye going & returning from north Wales.
Thanks Max. 😊
My daughter said the same about riding and being an organ donor. My other daughter got me a t shirt with logo. “ I m an organ donor who wouldn’t want a piece of this” 😂am 64 old and crusty🤷🏻♂️🛵
Hi Charlie
Great video
As others have said it's great to see somebody practicing not only riding skills but also bike handling on the ground.
Well done 👍
Thank you Les. 😊
Loving the videos. Got Harold my Himalayan last week. Tried Salisbury plains yesterday, with only a few offs lol. Would love to meet up for a ride out. I am only from near Romsey!
Hiya, I do love heading for the coast, and I plan to head to Sammy miller's at some point?
@@restdayrider that's great. This is my personal channel. I've put all the royal Enfield owners days and adventure bike days for Sammy miller iny dairy. There is a few of them! T&T
You did well to seek out expert guidance; so important to ride with confidence in one's ability. Agree wholeheartedly with your comment on defensive riding and might I add ALWAYS with proper gear! As a registered nurse, I see a vast reduction in trauma severity vs. those "casualware commmandos" who think sunglasses, jeans, and sandals mean "freedom" 😕 Looking foward to the upcoming rally report!
I completely agree! 😊
Hope to see you at the Dragon to say hello, coincidentally I've just had some new Metzeler Tourance tyres delivered for my Vstrom, just got to get them fitted in the morning, we do the Bruce Pollard rally on the Friday then go to the Dragon Saturday morning, have a safe journey 👍
Fabulous, come and say hello 😊
Nice tires! Looking forward to seeing how they work off road.
So am I! 😊
Well done 😊👍🙏
Thanks for the reminder to practice. I do practice panic braking, swerving, and slow-speed turning but I think adding the balance exercises would help. I've not intentionally put the Himalayan on the ground but perhaps it is time to experiment a bit with picking it up.
And thanks for the reference to the ADV riding skills channel. I'll check it out.
Hi, it's a really good channel. I like the straight forward explanations they give.
Glad you mentioned understanding the risk--wish more mitigated it by wearing good protective gear! Like your chin? Full face helmet. Like your skin? Armored gloves, pants, jackets... Eyes open & always checking around you so you can anticipate bad spots/situations & have the skills to avoid/get out of it, or help another.... Your gumption & smart approach is inspiring! I'm a relative newbie & MotoJitsu is a fantastic channel for learning how (& why) to practice skills & recommend that one, too.
Thank you. 😊 It does make me wince when I see folks ride in T shirts , shorts and trainers 😱
Mini skirts ..only occasionally back in the day.
It's always good to regularly practice manoeuvres, and especially emergency braking, even if you are experienced. I was impressed with the pick-up of a 200kg bike. You made it look easy. I recently got a Himalayan and I'm intending to do a trip around S America on it. I haven't tried picking it up yet! I didn't want to try moving the bike around on the side stand like you did as the stock side stand looks a bit weak. I know you changed yours. Is the new one more robust? The stock one looks like it would snap off if you do that. I was wondering what you think about the front brake? I knew before buying the Himalayan that the front brake isn't that good as almost every video mentions it, but I didn't expect it to be quite so weak. I wondered how you found it? I was thinking about trying to upgrade mine.
Hi Ian, thank you for your comments. 😊 The new side stand I put on is definitely stronger than the stock version. As for the front brake, I haven't noticed any issue as yet, but suspect that and the chain are something that as they need replacing over time I will upgrade anyway. 😊
Thanks for making me dizzy Charlie😉You put a lot of strong guys to shame there, nice work👍
Ha! Thank you 😊
The RE is such a classic bike too.
Well done Charlie! (Diana)
Thanks 😊
well done charlie, as a former paramedic many moons ago, I remember the questions, but I always say the people who dont understand your riding are normally not riders themselves!!! They dont understand the stress relief that riding gives you, and never will!!
I totally agree. 😊
the important thing is to keep up the enthusiasm, I always pray that I will be healthy, always happy, stay focused with positive thinking that is done every day, is running now
Wonderful video so good to see you growing more & more confident with your bike Charlie & kudos to Dave & Steve well done guys👍🏻
Thank you. 😊
Great things to learn and it gives you confidence in handling your bike in slow traffic 👌
Thank you 😊
Good to see you got on well with spinning the bike on the spot. You sounded really worried about it before! If you want to get a little more lean, experiment with using the opposite grip. Oh, and if the ground is soft, use something flat to avoid the sidestand getting all stabby into the floor.
Hope you have fun at the rally!
Hi Ash! Great to hear from you! Will have to come and see your workshop for a brew. 😊
@Rest Day Rider looking forward to it
you are just the best ever
Thanks! 😊
Off Livestream you
Enjoy the Dragon! I did the Dragon in 1966, with a mate on the back of my 250 BSA. Cold and wet. Stay safe, and have a great time!! Les
Thank you Les. 😊
Enjoy the Dragon Rally Charlie. I've only been once in the late 1960's, it was wet and muddy but not too cold that time (above freezing...😀 ) There was a bloke from Hartlepool there on a BSA Bantam and a couple that had come from Germany in Zundapp 600 combo. I remember him because he rode around wearing a Bowler hat...You will meet some nutters...🤣
Excellent! Sounds like I'll be right at home! 🤣
Bretracs is a great channel for learning off road skills. The way he dismounts is amazing, cool. Nice to see someone showing the leaning skills, fails an all. Most channels show you how 'good' they are already.
Thank you.😊
My favourite Brooklyn 99 quote: “I’m fine! The Doctor said it was only internal bleeding. That’s where the blood’s supposed to be!”
🤣
Just in from work and what do you know ? Charlie has uploaded another video . Sat down with a coffee and a Sainsbury chocolate chip digestive ( or seven) to enjoy UA-cam for a few minutes. Another great video with lots of useful stuff . People forget the low speed stuff is just as important as getting you knee down. I’ve never actually done that …. well not on purpose anyway. Off topic … the nurses and ambulance crews have my full support . 😀
Looking forward to seeing how The Dragon Rally goes.
Hi Martin, thank you and hope the biscuit was nice. 😊
Practicing is a great idea! I didn't know about the rotation of the bike on a stand. I need to practice my U-turns. Need to wait until the snow melts! Lol
Take care! Good luck on the rally!
Thank you. 😊
Hell Charlie Farley, you have done more, learnt more in the 1st year or so of riding, than I have done in 40+ years of riding good on ya . This year the Dragon rally, next year the Elephant Rally in Bavaria . You go girl .
That would be awesome!
Practice makes perfect makes you a much better rider nice to see you enjoying your biking journey love the vlogs ☘️👍😎
Thanks Chris. 😊
Aaah great to see you again in action. I thought you had given up vlogging. I liked the little bow you made (around 5' ) made me giggle again. Can't wait to see the dragon rally through your eyes. Keep it up Charlie, great video once again.
Definitely not given up! Just weather and time off limiting my time away 🙄
Nice one Charlie, as they say practice makes perfect 👊
Great Vlog Charlie. Do I suspect the Meteor is on borrowed time and will be up for sale in the near future?🤔
Ummmmm .....
I love her.
We will have to see. 😐
Hello the least we can say is that when you challenge yourself you go all out! I just hope you don't have to lift your bike too often😉✌️🇨🇵
So do I Alain! Merci 😊
Hi Charlie hope your keeping well. Good to see the practice. I’ve done this myself with various bikes I’ve had. A real confidence builder for when you are out and about by your self knowing that you can spin it on the side stand and pick it up when it’s inspecting the tarmac a little closely. As always keep safe and the rubber side down😊
Thank you Robert. Every day is a learning day!😊
nice video, you are learning all the tricks, and do it great. wish you a lot of fun at the dragon rally.
Thank you. 😊
Well done Charlie at the end of the day Roger isn't light tbh , good luck on the rally
Thanks 😊
At this rate you will be doing the Paris Dakar next year!
🤣ummmmm Paris yes, Dakar Noooooooo!
Loving your videos very entertaining and informative,
Thank you Julian. 😊
Great video and looking forward to the rally footage, enjoy! 😊
Thanks Iain. Looking forward to it 😁
Well done Charlie, everyday is a school day with a bike.only thing I've got to say is spinning your bike on the stand, how much pressure does it put on the bracket?x
No idea to be honest, it's not something you'd do every day tho, and I suspect mounting the bike on the pegs while on the side stand puts about the same pressure on?
@@restdayrider you're not twisting it through, I've seen it done in the past on light as a feather sports bikes, anyhoo, as long as you're having fun that's all that counts. Happy riding chuck.
Clever ideas are not always smart Ideas.
Nice to see you again Charlie. Enjoy the rally.
I'm looking forward to it 😁
Now then. From a fellow greenie (AAP) I've been asked the same question. " why do you ride?" etc and you've phrased your response far better than me. So thanks for that ! In other news I recently took delivery of a RE Classic 350 in red and chrome 😍
Excellent choice! 😊🚑
Only problem is there's salt all over the roads and she's all new and shiny and I want her to stay that way 🤨 first world problems 🙄🤣
Coat her in ACF50 or equivalent. 😊
@@restdayrider all being planned 😉
How long have you been passed your test?
Full licence 10 months. 😊
@@restdayrider well done. I passed years ago but had a long break. I’ve lived dreamed licked many bikes over the years and now I’m back on two wheels. Life has never been better. (And yes I did say licked) 🤣🤣😜
@@traceylloyd5382 is it worrying that I wasn't even going to question that you licked bikes? 🤣
@@restdayrider errrr. Maybe. I didn’t want you to think it was a typo and I meant liked rather than licked.
I’ve also licked a lancy bomber in the past coz I got close enough. 😀😀😀. I just love anything that goes brum. Just bought a triumph. My life is complete. Holy grail of all bikes in my opinion.
What sort of Triumph? I like the Bobber. 😊
Is it me or are the mirrors on the Himalayan sort of turned in restricting your rear view.. just saying!
I think it must be the camera angles, no restriction noticed. 😊
You are now a POD apparently! !
What's one of them? 🤔 A dried fruit case? Is that a good thing or a bad thing!?!
@@restdayrider no a " potential organ donor " a term used by Notts Paramedics for bikers - gallows humour i suppose! !
Ah I know the full term but not the anacronym 😊
