BIGGS PICTURE JASPER! NEW VEIN uncovered in Oregon
Вставка
- Опубліковано 6 жов 2024
- Kate and Jim head to Biggs, Oregon to explore a newly uncovered vein of Biggs Picture Jasper. The fascinating gemstone has been unavailable for many years, as most of the material is on private land - but recent roadwork uncovered new veins, which have been rapidly collected by intrepid rockhounds. In this video, Jim successfully hews two HUGE chunks of the jasper from the wall, while Kate is fooled into collecting a big pile of basalt. No worries, though - there's still PLENTY of jasperlicious goodness!

Jaspers are like the begonias of the plant world. There isn't just one example. There is tons of hues tons of colorful patterns. Nature truly is so beautiful. If we stop for a moment to appreciate her.😁
Well said! :)
I love that you show your mistakes as well as your successes. All helps the learning curve. Thank you.
Life is full of successes and failures. The reason we think others only succeed is because most of us hide the times we fail. I don't, as I think a) it's funny, and b) it helps other people understand their process is normal.
I don't care if it's jasper or basalt. They will both be beautiful when cut and polished. Keep having fun and be safe and stay healthy 😷⚒
Thanks, SM! I have seen polished basalt - it really is pretty - but the patterns on this stuff are only about 1/4" thick.
I've been there and know the owner. Got some nice samples.Just take the road south of Biggs junction and look up on the canyon wall and you'll see a huge vug of agate,
How cool! What kind of agate is in that area?
Hello Robert, I was wondering if the location is open to the public? After watching this video I'm still not sure, but at least it looks like you can kind of get to it. Thanks.
@@1sec2midnight This is a new vein that was uncovered by road widening.
@@KatyDidRocks Picture agate and many others.
My Indian friend in Redmond makes arrowheads and knives from it.
We learn from doing...
And basalt polishes too..
Jared from currently Rockhounding loves basalt.
I have seen a beautiful polished basalt bench in The Dalles - but I don’t know if the patterns are deep enough to not wear away when you try to polish.
Can’t wait to see what your finds look like when cut. Jim is such a trooper! Thanks for taking us along on this adventure Kate. Love your videos!!
Thanks for joining us! I'm delighted to have discovered that Jim really enjoys digging - very handy skill to have along!
Awesome stuff
Everyone should definitely check out your etsy store. I have never been disappointed in my rocks I have bought. Such beautiful rocks. This was a cool and informative video. I love picture jasper. Mr.Did worked his tail off in this one for sure. Too bad it wasn't all what you were looking for. Thanks for taking us along.
Glad you like them! :)
Found this vein about 6 years ago lol nice job!
Too funny! I had to laugh when you made the return trip. It made me think, the good mountain giveth and the good mountain taketh! ;-)
That clip was my husband's idea - he's an old. movie fan.
My wife and I don't always find what we are looking for but we always find a good time. Can't wait to see what you cut.
That's exactly right! Cutting video soon.
I laughed so hard when you were eating your hat😂😂 I’ve actually consumed a couple myself! Hats off to Mr. Did for all his hard work! I LOVE picture Jasper, can’t wait to see what you have there! Love your videos Kate, and really enjoy learning new things!😀👍👍
Thank you, Donna - I am so happy that Jim loves to dig and excavate, because I really don't. We must be the perfect pair. :D
Had some fun and learned some valuable lessons too, it's all rockhounding fun. Great job Kate!
Thanks, SeaJay - it is always a challenge to go somewhere new, but I LOVE it!
@@KatyDidRocks It sure is but it's not SeaJay, it's Denny...lol
We both really enjoyed your adventure. We have both been in the "I don't know what this is" shoes...lol
Be well and keep rockin'
Loved your excitement even tho you brought all that basalt back to where it came from. Glad you found some beautiful pieces.
Me too! And I was glad to get rid of the basalt, rather than finding out after I hauled it home (about a thousand miles) that it wasn't what I wanted. :)
Thank you Jim! And Katydid too!
Our pleasure! :)
Thank you
Welcome!
Jasper is so awesome! Many colors and patterns. I would be like a kid in a candy store. Interesting finds and information.
Yes, I love jasper a lot. I think it is very underappreciated.
JASPERS ❤️❤️. I’m in love with each and every Jasper. They are so beautiful and all so unique. This was a great 🎥. I too, get what I’m looking for wrong. Although it’s frustrating, it’s a learning experience. The things I’ve learned from your videos are priceless. Thanks Jim for helping out! I wish I lived in your neck of the woods to help too 😉
Thanks so much for the 🎥.
Stay Crystal 💫
Thank you!
Popcorn, check, water, check, drool rag, check.... I'm ready....😁
There's some droolworthy stuff, for sure, Michael - but some things will also make you laugh. :D
@@KatyDidRocks , well we all need a laugh now and again...😂
💚
So exciting and some great finds! Love this channel!
Yay! Thank you for joining me!
Thaaanks Jim,,,, you quick moving, chisel wielding rockhound beast. Great job Dood!! That stuff is hard on an old guy!!
Thanks Kate,,,, I wanna see some of that material after you get done with it!! Bet it's awesome.
Nice video guys!! Love it.
Ha, James, I showed this comment to him - he laughed. Cutting video coming soon (after my new saw blade arrives)
How humbling, you did well🙏🏼
Thanks - yes, it really was fun, and I don't have trouble laughing at myself. :D
Rock hounding is a learning process, awesome finds 😊💙
You got that right! :D But it's so much fun!
Yes it is 💙
Looks like you scored some nice pieces Katy!
It was a great time - and a real learning experience. :D
I love it. It’s so great to find people are just human like me. 😂 it was great to see you putting the stones back where you got them.
:D If I only showed my successes, it definitely wouldn't give a real picture of what rockhounding is like. It's ok not to know everything - that's why we learn!
Love that Biggs Jasper!!!
Me too! Slabbing video soon.
Add a small fine tooth file to your kit. It only adds a couple of ounces and it would have told you that you had basalt instead of jasper.😉
Great idea! As I watched the video footage, I heard myself say "This doesn't LOOK like jasper" or some variant at least five times. Maybe I should listen to myself! :D It made for a great story, though.
Love jasper!!!
Me too!
I just loved this. I seldom know what I'm picking up. Always want to know what is out there.
It was so much fun - even with the basalting! :D
I wish i didn't have to work when you came down! I have a really nice Biggs Spot now ;)
Also love to see you being safe!
Maybe next time. :)
Ha! You got basalted... I might need to barrow that saying!
It was actually James who said it - I just liked it. :)
Wow beautiful rocks you guys! I have to eat my hat every time we rockhounding. There’s so many different types of Jasper, it’s incredibly difficult to identify them on the spot, especially at a new spot! Totally off
:) I thought about cutting a big bite out of the hard hat, but decided that was unnecessary.
Beautiful iam Jesper ston Avelabal my
You might try a scratch test to see if you can differentiate it that way, iron shouldn't scratch jasper and jasper should scratch un-tempered glass. By comparison both glass and iron should scratch basalt easily
Glassy, conchoidal fractures also give jasper away.
Yep, I knew in my heart it wasn't jasper - I just wanted it to be. :D
Hello KatDidRocks, nice video from Oregon, I've been wondering about Biggs and if it is accessible for the public. I would love to get a sample or two. Thanks for sharing the video.
The new road project uncovered some new material - its in the road cuts. It already has been hit pretty hard, though.
@@mightybigtuna Hello, thanks, I have been to this road cut last summer after this video aired and did not find anything good. Take care.
Loved the video 👍
Have you ever seen a hiwall collapse? Pulling the wrong stone can make it happen. Please be safe.
Thank you, James, for the warning. Apparently this area has been listed off-limits now by the Oregon DOT. We filmed this more than a year ago, when the area was first opened - and we DID try to be as careful as possible.
What mile marker are you at?
Not sure - it was literally half a mile past the intersection with the Interstate.
So cool! I'm really surprised you're allowed to pick out entire chunks from the rock face a mere 15 feet from the highway. Are all the bits you are looking through erosion or discards from collectors? Is the area prone to rock slides? Is it safe? Thanks for sharing!
I don't live far from here. Care to share the location?
This is a road cut right south of Biggs Junction. There has been road construction all along that area, and lots of jasper was uncovered.
All the little bits of info you added at bottom, was Nice - but what about "Picture Jasper"? Well, i looked it up. 8 ) Logic - Name says it all. lol I see many things in All Rocks
The jaspers are pretty remarkable when cut. Stay tuned for a cutting video soon!
You get potch with opal too! In fact black opals are backed with black potch! 😁❤️🇨🇦❤️
That's cool!
That black from Bigs makes awsome backers
I yelled timber when the bug rock broke free...
:D!
There's a claim there on the hill you can't see from the road .
Soooo, umm what if a person has rocks like this on their land, but it's nowhere near....Oregon or Washington wherever that is??? Should I take my rocks somewhere to be evaluated? What kind of places do that?
Hello! Maybe find a local rock club and show the rocks to them. There are picture jaspers in several states - but if you have some where you live, I"m sure they might be interested.
The old basalt bait and switch. Typical 😎
:D It was a learning experience!
Ummm. . . Why did you have the basalt in. The first place? Fortunately re-homing it back in the wild isn’t difficult.
:D Basically, we just didn't have a clue!
The OSP told us they wanted us parked completely off the road and not to get onto private property.
Good tips !
@@KatyDidRocks Got some more goodies for you.Head south to Wasco then east towards the John Day river. Up along the banks of the road descending down to the John Day watch the rock seams. You;ll find some beautiful yellos(lemon) to chartreuse agate in those seams. It's opalized so it's a little brittle but as you dig deeper it hardens. As with most opal long exposure to heat and freezinf wrecks it. Happy hunting.
@@robertsnyder5149 That sounds wonderful! I'm back in Montana right now - but I hope to go visit my parents in Oregon again soon. I will put it on my list! :)
Why? Everyone on UA-cam never wanna share their secrets spot?
Hi, Chris. This spot wasn't secret - it was right next to the highway. They have blocked off access now because of danger to the cliff face.
Iam red jesper mins my
jasper isn't always waxy
take a look at dalmatian jasper sometime and you'll see what I'm talking about
Hi, Billy! Dalmatian jasper looks really cool.
So why is it called picture Jasper?
It makes scenes when you cut it.
@@KatyDidRocks Can't wait to see! Thanks Kate for the good UA-cam's
Y’all clearly know what you’re doing. What’s the rules on rockhounding road cuts?
Most of the time it’s ok. This particular area has been closed since we filmed there, as the DOT determined that it was dangerous.
@@KatyDidRocks they did road cut improvements a few years ago. Probably will shed materials for quite a few years now. Will at least be good pickings that come loose.
So why wasn’t I told about this new find if Biggs. I’m not far from there and I like Biggs Picture Jasper.
There might still be some to find - the roadwork is extensive.
Have you ever seen a hiwall collapse? Pulling the wrong stone can make it happen. Please be safe.
Thanks - see above. :)
