Tom and Jerry (Plane Dumb) - Cartoon Racisim from 1933

- There is no relationship between this Tom and Jerry is not the Tom and Jerry cat and mouse that came may years later.
It shows Tom and Jerry afraid of Africa so they put on black face to blend in.
From Wikipedia:
Tom and Jerry are flying to Africa in a plane, which crashes. As they float on a piece of wreckage, they decide that painting their faces black will keep them safe in Africa, and they begin talking like African-American stereotypes of the time. After encounters with sharks, an overly-friendly octopus, and a whale, Tom and Jerry make it to the mainland. They are confronted by beasts of the African jungle, and they meet some skeletal Africans that were retooled from the first Tom and Jerry short, "Wot a Night", then are chased by savage tribesmen at the end of the cartoon. This cartoon has often been considered racist, due to its blackface gag & stereotyping of African Americans. - Фільми й анімація
I always believed that Tom and Jerry was a cat and mouse
Yeah and why tf does the producer “Van” have the same logo as the shoe company “Vans”
I think it’s a ripoff? Looks like it
Read the description...
@@coopa_troopa0192 this tom and jerry is the first one from the the early 1930's and up until 1940 they changed it to the cat and mouse version and for the old human version they changed the name to dick and larry
@@thelilbitofficial I guess it looked cool or something
Very imaginative work, and a fascinating look at the times. Racism is still a problem, and knowing something about its history helps understand it and refute it. This should not be censored, but looked at as education.
I agree
I enjoyed the art & movement . I am so glad to read comments from black viewers who see it for what it is. As we progress to an enlightened society, cultural artifacts like this have to be seen as representing common viewpoints & misconceptions. That's why it's misguided to remove sensitive words from Mark Twain's books, when he was doing his best to represent & satirize generally held viewpoints. Twain opposed racism, oppresssion, & US aggression, yet his books are mistakenly censored.
Hi,
You are a liar.
You never read a comment from any black person approving this"For what it was".
What a pathetic little snot.
You may have been on the right track with Twain, but you're just a punk trying to promote your racist ideals.
Crawl back into your hole, troll.
I'm done with the likes of you.
Loveyouseeyou. Bye!
Peace
@@jmleaf8102 Imagine replying to a 9 year old comment to say something like that
@@generalgrievous3731 Yeah Imagine
@@jmleaf8102 What the hell?
Racist? Yes. But it's also a fascinating part of animation history.
You have to admit, for older animation limitations, with it being the twenties and all, they did a really good job.
They drew frame by frame on glass and them took pictures.
@@Flavia_Lancieri
Plastic, actually.
@@hongxiuquan69 oh sorry lol I was badly informed
I'm offended by how the waves formed a knot
why
What is the knot upsetting??
I was more confused at the waves forming in a knot
He won't respond that was 8 years ago
Great cartoon still rings true today! Great post keep em coming.
Well drawn and underrated animation way ahead of it's time.
And it definitely took a lot of patience with waiting for the paint on each animation cel to dry and animating the ocean and chase scenes with the moving background. The characters and the environment are flexible and lifelike and can be noticed in many cartoons from the 1930's.
What’s also speciesist, is that Tom and Jerry aren’t even animals!!
They should make a reboot of this series on Cartoon Network 😎
Bro
They'd never get away with it especially since Cartoon Network is so leftist and politically correct.
@@japanfanatic1415 I think he means of the show in general. Not specifically the racist African episode.
L laughed only at the skeletins singing lol
Feb.10,1940: Tom & Jerry cartoon created by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera debuts on MGM. Thanks for the upload, zbowling. Blessings
This was originally going to be the first of a series of cartoons based on(and presumably voiced by)Black comedy team Miller and Lyles, but for whatever reason(possibly the death of Lyles), it was changed to a "Tom and Jerry".
is it really a total coincidence or were the makers of the cat and mouse cartoon fans of this?
holy shit tom and jerry were people at the start??!?!?!
They are 2 completely different cartoons made by different studios and are completely unrelated except for the name.
There names were changed to Dick and Larry to not get confused with the cat and mouse
The shark thing on here sounds like a lot of my relatives on their 4th of July fishing trip to the Gulf Coast. After a while of almost getting bitten by "Jaws", they finally learned not to put their nasty feet in the water. ha ha!
wow... the geo in this is incredible
What the hell did I just watch?
I was expecting to see a cat tormenting a mouse 🤔
Tom was actually the more tormented one I'd say
Yea, here we are in 2021, gettin this to 100k
5:01 scary stuff starts

It seems cartoon character having 3 fingers rule (well sometimes three, sometimes four in this) translates to octopi as 6 tentacles rather than 8, just like Squidward!
It took 13 years to get in my recommendation.
Great
That was groovy in a far out happening kind of way.
Very true indeed.
thank you
its been 200 years drop it
That was my first thought too
wow this video was made after i was born
You're probably more right than I want to acknowledge to myself. :)
They really thought africa was a country
I'll admit that last line is a bit of an understatement. What I mean to say is that this cartoon is obviously incorrect from a modern frame of thinking. The thing is that you can't project our current understanding of things on a cartoon that was made in an era where the civil right's movement hadn't fought against this kind of stereotyping and where there was still a lot of misinformation on the cultural and historical aspects of other continents. See it as it is, a testament of another time.
how can they hear eachother in the plane
This ain't racist. :)
Like really they are the ones who have negative thoughts thinking it's racist
And this is what the old tim and jerry
I can't believe Jasper and Jinx copy this guy name
i freakin KNOW RIGHT!
Wow......
What a surprise that, 90 years ago, things were different.
Yes they are necessary or they would not be occurring.
Here's a thought🤔...wow! I didnt know that this is how the cat n mouse started out. And the Blacktopus that jumped on the wing with'm, whoa! How bout the fact that their disguise didnt wear off in the water but when they used their gloves it took it off right when they wanted it off. Must've been KIWI shoe polish. Black skeletons too, now come on yaw. Reminds of that old movie "Soul Man"...🤣😆😭...🤨opinions?
I'm actually quite disturbed that this was my favorite cartoon as a kid and I'm black. japanese anime from now on
That is pretty messed up. I also have a cartoon I got from the $1 rack at wal-mart. At the end of the cartoon they were doing black face, and the editors of the DVD blurred our the faces. My question is, sure black face is racist today, but wasn't it just a performing style back then? Hmm, even if so, yeah may have been based on some kind of bigotry.
ok toggaF
Hi,
Ya Think?
Peace
Totally richard elfmans forbidden zone vibes lol good lord
WOW ITS INCREDIBLE HOW SIMPLE MINDED PEOPLE WERE IN THIS ERA
Yea were better now 🤪
I love this cartoon. Found it on DVD in a Walgreen store back around 2002.
I think its a good educational tool
As long as that baiting goes along with valid arguments, I'm okay with it.
Ain't it Jay? (I'm sorry, I just couldn't resist. Forgive me.)
The only time I wish that not only the sharks won,but got everything on the island! This cartoon isn't even worth the film they used to make it!!
Not as bad as the movie "White Chicks"
:((((((
You're right, and that's why we shouldn't forget that these racial sentiments can have catastrophous consequences when taken serious. That being said, let's not make a silly cartoon from the thirties into much more than it is. This is a testament of a time where they had different ideas on how to representate people from other continents. That's all there is to it!
I’m gonna take them serious
@Kasak1984 You're very intelligent man!
Psychedelic
A bit of a cliffhanger.
Lol They are smart i might try that
i kinda felt bad for the animator who worked hard on this but
then it got banned due to racist stereotypes like the blackface gag and stereotype of african americans
that is why someone posted it and also why there is a comment section under the videos.
@BABERCO i agree my friend
is there one where they visit the middle east
They were originally humans? What?
Just love that cool chick, and the way she steps off the ferry and wakes the whole town up! And man, wasn't Satchmo a racist, singing "When It's Sleepy Time Down South"? I'm not sure if it's racist to show the cat walking on the dog and it waking up with a lazy bow-wow. Boonya, I'm a middle aged Wop with a complex ancestry that includes Vikings and Injuns (likely some Teagues too), but what bearing does it have? Sheesh! Can't folks relax about these things? Are Speedy Gonzalez cartoons racist?
funny shit,,lol
RKO?!?
tt is funny that people are debating whether this is racist. It's definitely racist, but that racism is the only thing that actually makes it funny. I think there is something wrong with anybody who can't laugh a little bit at the blatant racism of 1930s cartoons and comedies.
@ploidh - I have no idea way you are saying what ever about
I'm offended by the fact that the title of the cartoon is a pun
Na
this was funny in a weird way

How can y'all understand what they are saying? 👀
Yes. And while this was a poor imitation of the MUTT AND JEFF series of the silent era, this has to be the worst one of the series that I have seen.
American history.
I respect every ethnic group... haha sorry for my previous comment mistake
What is stupid is to assume the African people would talk like that
lol
I don't mean to nitpick, but this cartoon is actually from the early 30's, not the 20's.
I am. Not. Sleep
What are African Harlemites? I've never heard of them. I'm not sure about today, but the cartoon is from the '20s and the two places I mentioned were once very noted for that type of vernacular. Which of course is not the way Africans talk.
1933.
