  • Now that I made the executive decision to start stacking (as opposed to piling) all green firewood I wanted to make a video to show my employees how to get'er done with having to throw on the ground then stacking. This should save some time and time is money.

    Hi Joe - good video and I like the idea of stacking straight off the splitter. Here is an idea for you, and a couple of those rounds may have been a little too big for this. But I've had success doing this on white oak and hickory up to 9 or 10" in diameter. I split it one time right down the middle, then hit reverse on the splitter. As soon as the wedge clears the round, I slightly lift and rotate the round 90 degrees. The wedge is still within about 3 or 4 inches of the round, so I grab the handle and push it back through. It makes for a really short cycle time and I get my 4 pieces of firewood with 2 splits instead of your 3 splits. I also don't have to reach down and pick up the other half. Even if the wedge is not tall enough to get all the way up into the top half, my experience is that as long as it gets about 1/2 way into that upper 1/2, it will split it. The smartest thing might be to get a slip on 4 way attachment.....then you get 4 pieces with one split

    Hay Joe you should weld small tables to the side of your splitter you won't believe how much more user friendly it is

    You are doing a lot of things right here, especially about not having to move the wood any more than absolutely necessary. I would suggest that if you have a helper available you have one of them loading the splitter and stacking the split wood; it will be much easier on your back and you can concentrate on just doing the splitting. Also, I would argue to orient your stacks of wood to point into the prevailing wind, that will minimize the amount of rain hitting the ends of the stacked wood. The wood dries from the ends. If possible, arrange the covers so that they overlap the ends of the wood to provide more rain protection; three pieces of cheap 2 by 4 lumber would do that nicely. Your use of free pallets to stack the wood on is the way to go; a common mistake people make is to put the solit wood directly on the ground; it will soon rot And it attracts bugs.

    Joe if you had a foot petal to operate the machine you would have 2 hands free. It makes a big difference.

    I built a shelf for my splitter, it is attached to the bottom of the beam. I used 2 inch angle iron, 2 pieces under the beam then 2 pieces that are welded to them vertically and the shelf is welded to the 2 sticking up. It is bolted to the beam with 2, 1/2 bolts so it can be removed if I want to use the splitter in the vertical position. When I am splitting the larger pieces, I split them in half and let the far piece roll onto the shelf and after I am done with the other piece the one on the shelf can be easily pulled back onto the splitter. It saves a bunch of work having to pick up wood a second time.

      Just buy one. They run about $40 at L&M Fleet supply and you bolt it on. It's held 20 inch wet Oak rounds 18 inches across with no problem.

    Great 'executive decision' there . The Board of Directors are voting on a stock-split and need to know if maple is as easily divisible as cherry wood. The market is suggesting that it would be in shareholders interests to buck the trend !

    Doing that amount of wood, can I suggest adding a cradle and a 4 way wedge. I’m sure would save a lot if time.

    An outfeed table or tray on both sides would catch the split pieces coming off the wedge and keep them at waist level for either stacking or splitting again. The wet wood wouldn't have to be held against the machine with your body (ie keeps the clothes cleaner and dryer), and avoids having to contact moving pieces.

    That's definitely the way to do it if only one guy is working everything. I try to squeeze the trailer or truck bed in close also so I don't even have to pick up the rounds off the ground.

      Drive around an industrial area or behind a big-box home improvement store, and you will likely see big stacks of empty pallets that they are happy to get rid of. Also check on Craigslist for free pallets. If possible, get pallets the exact same size. ### choose the site for your wood Stacks carefully. If you can find a spot between two evergreen trees that are pointed into the prevailing wind, so much the better, because they will provide some built-in shelter from rain and snow. ### Lay down a 2 in bed of 5/8 crushed rock with fines in the area of the firewood stacks, especially where you will be loading firewood later to take him to the house. ### Place ordinary concrete blocks at all four corners, and in the middle of two pallets joined together with a 1x4 splice alongside two of them - one on each side, to make an 8-foot-long stack that has a minimum four-foot span supporting the load at each end. ### Put another pallet at each end, vertical, and nail them to the two horizontal pallets. Run 2 ea 2x4's on edge across the top, with some slope so rain will drain off. Then nail about 4 pieces of 1x4 across those to form support for a roof of galvanized, corrugated steel roofing available at far supply store or big-box home improvement store. ###Try to estimate your winter firewood usage, so you can minimize your time and effort by building more than one rack at a time. I have been building racks like this for many years; they are inexpensive, last a very long time, and do the job well.

  • @TomBrueggen
    @TomBrueggen 6 років тому

    Hey Joe, not that it matters, but I feel like what you're splitting there is pretty clear. Would a splitting maul not be much faster? I know, antiquated perhaps, and more physical labor, but you said time is money. I'm all for a hydraulic splitter when it comes to any tough wood, but if it's clear and I have a maul handy, I feel like it's much faster, and much more gratifying at the end of the day. Heck, swing the maul till you'r tired then take a break and run the splitter. : )

      Ha! Fair enough. I'm still young and dumb enough to like a maul.

    Why does the machine sound like it's working harder reversing the wedge than it does splitting the wood?

    • @samuelluria4744
      @samuelluria4744 6 років тому +1

      That, and the fact that hydraulics do work harder in "reverse" than "forward". There's less back-pressure...
