Since the release of the Steam Deck, I've been eager to try PC consoles. My first experience is with the MSI Claw-a unique model. While most major manufacturers opt for AMD as the "heart" of their devices, MSI chose the new Core Ultra 7.
How do games perform? How long does the battery last? Are there any hidden pitfalls? I'll answer all these questions in this video.

A shame MSI wasted that good looking device on those internals ...All the other manufacturers chose AMD for a reason lol
We are essentially beta testers for Intel GPUs.
Intel has been doing graphics for over 25 years. They just suck.

Yeah that's nuts. On my Ally X Forza 5 on medium ia low 60s, low 70s with fluid motion on. It only pulls 20w total package which is like 3.5 hours. Even on turbo it lasts over 2 hours and is 100fps.
I have bought and tested so many handheld PCs and the Claw is the ONLY one that I returned.
Performance in games is just bad compared to AMD handhelds.
But amazing video!
Ally X is better, Claw is the worst handheld to get at the moment.

In my country, the Msi claw is the cheapest handheld Pc you can get.
I don't see it as a gaming device, but as a friggin PC with 13th gen I5 + capable apu+16gb ddr5 ram for 400$!

Windows is another issue, but the intel drivers on linux lead to less preformance. Intel just kinda sucks

Yeah, Intel drivers for Arc on Linux are behind those on Windows, but they started adding stuff, from kernel 6.2 then 6.4 if I'm not mistaken. Hoping they still keep people working on the drivers, in about one full year, things should work well on Linux too. Though Meteor Lake will most likely never be amazing

Nice to see you've checked with the E-cores disabled, and the P-cores limited to 3.6 GHz. I actually expected that to help more. Also, Windows lagging on 6 cores of 3.6 GHz ? WTactualF ? Something is fishy. Windows by itself should not be laggy starting from 2 cores at 2.0 GHz. Very weird. Then again, I lost all hope at Windows being decent after seeing Microsoft's priorities with Windows 11. So happy I jumped to Linux. Which has its issues too, but you have control and in general you're not treated like a stupid slave. Anyway, I'll stop with the Windows rant.
MSI Claw 1 will most likely never be amazing, just decent at most (and that including a hefty price drop).
However, apparently in Jan 2025 MSI Claw 8 (8 coming from 8", the screen size) will be launched. With Lunar Lake, which should be muuuch better at power efficiency. I hope MSI won't cheap out and will use a 32 GB chip, not a 16 GB one.
Why would you even buy it tbh. The reviews by other people already tell you how bad it is. It is BAD and cost as much as an ally X what a joke

Been a ryzen+geforce pc gamer for a long time. So I decided to give intel a chance and this happened. 🤦
Hopefully it gets better in the future.
I believe that the claw is still significantly faster than amd's 780m as synthetic benchmark number scores shows . But the drivers(still beta) are just holding the performance back.
Want to buy one as it’s 300 pounds off which is mental but I’m guessing this price drop is because of it failing to compete with the competition and msi is trying to not lose money

Everyone wants "like on Xbox controller", but Xbox controller has different grip. The only viable solution is Steam Deck sticks or Dualshock/Dualsense sticks
I'm glad they created this. At least it will hopefully push Intel to improve their ARC drivers further. The Arc 770, while a great value, is actually pretty terrible when you consider it's hardware is quite exceptional, but it just barely outperforms the 1080 ti, which has silicon that is several generation behind. Intel has a lot of work to do with optimizing their drivers and improving performance. Also, I'm glad this is not just another handheld with a z1 extreme regardless of how trash it is.

Have you considered downloading msi after burner for overclocking the msi claw cpu and gpu?
Just how bad is this? Currently they're selling it here around 450 USD equivalent for the ultra5 model by msi themselves

Next week I'll be able to test the Claw again for a few days. I will check if Overboost make any meaningfull difference in terms of FPS for Super Battery and Balanced mode. But I am 100% sure that OVERBOOST won't fix the main concern - battery life. And just according to naming, it can get even worse

And if you can, try the core ultra 5 as well, it seem to have a better performance/price ratio than the ultra 7 and in some scénarios it has better fps du to less heat in the socket.
For the batterie life i don't think there wil be any improvement with overboost, when i use my claw with this activated in the supper battery mode i still consume about 20w an get aproximatively 2h of batterie life on doom eternal for example.

Usually MSI/Asus/Acer etc offices are providing (near)top-spec devices in order to show their products from the best possible perspective. So I am not shure if my local MSI office is even have an Ultra 5 variant.

tech isnt there and the battery pointless because tou always need it plugged into a wall when you want full power....like an xbox x that i brought after i sold it two weeks later.

For say...$399 I'd be in on one of these, the top spec model. Otherwise...It's just not competitive enough.
Price for the 135H version is arround 485 to 535$. 155H has more 2 P-cores that take the power from iGPU... And that's bad. Also you can disable in BIOS spare 2 super E-cores what gives even more energy to iGPU. And in price of Ally with Z1 (not Extreme) this is killer. After BIOS update and Intel GPU drivers release it's competition to Ally with Z1 Extreme.
