This tea is pretty outdated. back in the older seasons, yeah. But now in recent seasons they get treated good. Kim Chi said that in season 8 they got amazing food. And Blair said that she and the rest of season 10 got to watch IT while filming, and Eureka got sent to a hospital. the only thing that’s true is the edit they get

It's pretty disingenuous to compare it to prison. American prisons don't provide food that you can live on long term. Prison is not just being bored and unable to contact people. Drag race doesn't have the best on set conditions, but it is not like prison at all and comparing it to that is low key disrespectful to people who have been imprisoned.
I always wondered why eliminated queens don't appear on like Ellen or Jimmy Kimmel ... now I know, they are contractually barred from making appearances for one year, and after a year, they are old news. It's kinda sad actually.

The anti-union rule is unheard of when filming shows. Especially in Hollywood. RPDR has some very concerning practices and needs to stop taking advantage of queens just because “they launched their career.”
Depends on the reality and the network, take LHH franchise, some of the acts there sign such binding contracts in their favor that if they get hit once, the network has to pay them their livers, on the other hand starting out numbers or people Mona Scott doesn't really care for won't have such clause, so they are the ones getting into most fights and loosing their wigs the most, and of course we have those who played the system, such as K. Michelle who was protected but always found a way to get hit, and Masika and Hazel, their fights made sure the Hollywood franchise was renewed for many seasons, they were bringing 4M viewers every episode, and getting a bag every single time.

Some queens are Union but they appear on the show not as entertainers, that's not their job titles. Willam for instance for sure has to be union because he is used to be being treated a certain way and had been up front on how badly he pissed off the show by breaking rules constantly. Pretty sure the general rule is, queens sign a contract waiving all union rights, or they can choose not to be on the show. If they don't like it, they can leave. Staying non-union can potentially allow you to make so much money, even if it's kinda evil. Power Rangers, the children's show, was non-union for decades and the actors have said they were paid very poorly and got like no merchandising rights.

Its one month of filming. Every reality show pretty much does this. Taking away your phone helps you stay focused on competition and the environment. Like on the Bachelor/Bachelorette its the exact same
They don't get Willam's money at least, Beatdown is under his own production company. If they're doing it with WoW then that's the producer of the show and a lot of online content, therefore the producers get paid. Trixie and Katya have the new thing with Netflix, so WoW doesn't get any of that money because they aren't the producers. It was worded in a misleading way to up the drama.

Alaska and Willam have their own podcast where they talk about every episode of drag race. They talk a lot about behind the scenes too. They also talk to a lot of other queens for behind the scenes stuff. If you are a fan of drag race then you need to listen to this podcast. It's called Race Chaser.
I work in tv and find the fact that the queens don't have access to decent catering or craft services absolutely ridiculous. This isn't a low budget tv show.
I was wondering if maybe they had craft services or a mid-workday lunch on set, but must provide any food to their hotel room. But that also doesn’t line up with being “taped” into the room. That might have been for one specific period of time. How they provide their own food if they can’t leave or open the door to delivery?
@@twobluestripes easy, they communicate via notes under the door to production assistants and then those production assistants will make grocery trips, etc. If you notice they are in hotel rooms that are "suites" like long-term stay hotels and they have little kitchens. Queens can make their own little meals, eat cereal, frozen stuff, whatever, altho tbh I'm sure they're way too tired to after 10-12hrs filming. What you see in the suitcases is just for their 1st week or whatever

You shouldn’t have to already be rich to be able to afford to go on the show though. They aren’t able to work that whole time and make barely any money off of it. If they were paying them residuals and taking care of them while they were there then that would be one thing, but how is any regular person supposed to survive on that? That’s not to mention contestants that might have families to take care of. AND they aren’t even going to pay for medical care if they get hurt?? They stand to lose more than they ever gain with this bullshit.
And I noticed in later seasons they started doing more physically demanding challenges like the cheerleader competition where Eureka hurt her knee, and the one where Yvie Oddly hurt her ankle. A union would have most likely nixed those challenges or put boundaries in place to make them safer. How sad for these talented performers. I read somewhere RuPaul is worth around $60 million. I know it’s not just his show and there’s a whole studio behind it, but damn! They could shell out some $ for food.

because World of Wonder is money hungry so they leave their queens hungry. This is the first big name television show running today that I've ever heard of not feeding their fucking CAST. I was a BTS photographer on a number of sets (a very small role in the camera crew) and they made sure every single one of us, even the unpaid, PA interns were fed. It's pretty effed up/

They should do the finale live that way the winning queen's reaction is genuine. They can do a tape delay in case someone drops an f-bomb and record the dress rehearsal (a common practice for shows recorded in front of an audience) so they have back-up footage for any mistakes or technical issues.
I heard the reason why they don't do it live is because it's too much money for production. I just think it would be nice because you get to see the genuine reaction from the winning queen like from seasons 1-3. And either way there are still videos on UA-cam you can find to give you all the spoilers so it really doesn't make a difference.
The finale you see on tv is significantly shorter than what goes on in real life. Jakeyonce was at the season 11 finale and said it was like 4-6 hours (I forget the exact number). You really think they final 2 queens have like 20 minutes to change elaborate costumes and change makeup?
One thing to note from this video is to love the queens when they are on the show and off it. Go to their shows, tip them, see their online shows, buy their merch, etc. We've only seen a fraction of them and not the *real* them. Even if they are given a villain edit, you don't truly know them. They put up with garbage to entertain you and get famous. At the end of the day, they are human and deserve respect regardless of what a tv show tells us. Support drag performers.... and dammit someone fight for them so future performers have better conditions on this damn problematic show.

The "one year supply of cosmetics" for winner is also inaccurate in the show. Bob the Drag Queen said that everyone gets his/her supply from producers because they wouldn't fit whole makeup in those 5 suitcases. And when they go, they can take whole pack. No matter if you win or go home first
I have worked my entire adult life in art and entertainment. None of this surprises me. I once was a production designer for a feature lenth film with zero pay (with the promise of "exposure," "credibility" and "great opportunities for your career;"), and after the first three days of 22-hour workdays, most of which were done between the hours of 16:00-06:00, and I went into sleep deprivation psychosis and spiraled down from there. It took me years to crawl back into a place where I could work again. Creative people are extremely exploited, and their struggles are often overlooked because it can look cute and easy and light hearted on the outside. Well lemme tell ya: if it's easy to look at, it probably took years to master, and countless hours to make.
There's no way in hell I would ever go on this show or want anyone else to get on because these restrictions are insane and disgusting THEY DON'T EVEN GET RESIDUAL COMPENSATION FOR THEIR RERUNS

It's easy to look at this video and say "God damn, Drag Race is cruel, brutal, and torture." But what people don't seem to grasp is the rewards that come with being on the show. Drag race has essentially pulled these girls out of poverty. Chichi Devayne went from working two full time jobs to doing drag, Katya was able to pay off her student loans, and Kennedy saved her childhood home. In the Devil's Wear Prada, Emily Blunt's character says "You work a year for her and you can work at any magazine you want." That's Rupaul's drag race, it can makes dreams come true.
Your totally right and if you look at the other queens some of them literally became famous. I'm not gonna judge the show based on what they've said here. I'm just gonna enjoy it and watch them turn themselves into a living art just like Sasha Velour has mentioned that she's a visual artist.
I believe RPDR is now a union show. Doesn't just effect contestants but has a knock on effect with the staff. William said on the Race chaser podcast that when they wanted more time to get ready they'd just all do their make up a little slower and demand more time but now contestants can't get away with that and they run on stricter schedules as they can't keep the crew working past certain hours
That's why this season widow von du just got eliminated because she got in her own head. They keep them locked up like that all that stress and stuff get to people head. Some people when feeling down need comfort from others especially family to boost them up but locked up away and no cell phone man that's not right.

I work in tv and find the fact that the queens don't have access to decent catering or craft services absolutely ridiculous. This isn't a low budget tv show.

I was wondering if maybe they had craft services or a mid-workday lunch on set, but must provide any food to their hotel room. But that also doesn’t line up with being “taped” into the room. That might have been for one specific period of time. How they provide their own food if they can’t leave or open the door to delivery?
They do get catering at least in the newer seasons
@@twobluestripes easy, they communicate via notes under the door to production assistants and then those production assistants will make grocery trips, etc. If you notice they are in hotel rooms that are "suites" like long-term stay hotels and they have little kitchens. Queens can make their own little meals, eat cereal, frozen stuff, whatever, altho tbh I'm sure they're way too tired to after 10-12hrs filming. What you see in the suitcases is just for their 1st week or whatever

You shouldn’t have to already be rich to be able to afford to go on the show though. They aren’t able to work that whole time and make barely any money off of it. If they were paying them residuals and taking care of them while they were there then that would be one thing, but how is any regular person supposed to survive on that? That’s not to mention contestants that might have families to take care of. AND they aren’t even going to pay for medical care if they get hurt?? They stand to lose more than they ever gain with this bullshit.
And I noticed in later seasons they started doing more physically demanding challenges like the cheerleader competition where Eureka hurt her knee, and the one where Yvie Oddly hurt her ankle. A union would have most likely nixed those challenges or put boundaries in place to make them safer. How sad for these talented performers. I read somewhere RuPaul is worth around $60 million. I know it’s not just his show and there’s a whole studio behind it, but damn! They could shell out some $ for food.

because World of Wonder is money hungry so they leave their queens hungry. This is the first big name television show running today that I've ever heard of not feeding their fucking CAST. I was a BTS photographer on a number of sets (a very small role in the camera crew) and they made sure every single one of us, even the unpaid, PA interns were fed. It's pretty effed up/

They should do the finale live that way the winning queen's reaction is genuine. They can do a tape delay in case someone drops an f-bomb and record the dress rehearsal (a common practice for shows recorded in front of an audience) so they have back-up footage for any mistakes or technical issues.
I heard the reason why they don't do it live is because it's too much money for production. I just think it would be nice because you get to see the genuine reaction from the winning queen like from seasons 1-3. And either way there are still videos on UA-cam you can find to give you all the spoilers so it really doesn't make a difference.
I wish they did as well. I know they did the Thai edition live. It was nice to see the winners genuine reaction
It seems like filming the different outcomes, and any reshoots, plus necessary editing, would be more expensive then take delay live filming.
The finale you see on tv is significantly shorter than what goes on in real life. Jakeyonce was at the season 11 finale and said it was like 4-6 hours (I forget the exact number). You really think they final 2 queens have like 20 minutes to change elaborate costumes and change makeup?
Danny Carrington live shows are MUCH MORE expensive. Incomparably.
Ru is a cold business person to keep the actors union out because they would demand food, breaks, and handle a lot of issues with those contracts 💯
Ru came to shop where I used to work (in Paris) on NYE 2018 and he's the most obnoxious customer I've ever had to serve. His husband was nice tho.

One thing to note from this video is to love the queens when they are on the show and off it. Go to their shows, tip them, see their online shows, buy their merch, etc. We've only seen a fraction of them and not the *real* them. Even if they are given a villain edit, you don't truly know them. They put up with garbage to entertain you and get famous. At the end of the day, they are human and deserve respect regardless of what a tv show tells us. Support drag performers.... and dammit someone fight for them so future performers have better conditions on this damn problematic show.

I have worked my entire adult life in art and entertainment. None of this surprises me. I once was a production designer for a feature lenth film with zero pay (with the promise of "exposure," "credibility" and "great opportunities for your career;"), and after the first three days of 22-hour workdays, most of which were done between the hours of 16:00-06:00, and I went into sleep deprivation psychosis and spiraled down from there. It took me years to crawl back into a place where I could work again. Creative people are extremely exploited, and their struggles are often overlooked because it can look cute and easy and light hearted on the outside. Well lemme tell ya: if it's easy to look at, it probably took years to master, and countless hours to make.
There's no way in hell I would ever go on this show or want anyone else to get on because these restrictions are insane and disgusting THEY DON'T EVEN GET RESIDUAL COMPENSATION FOR THEIR RERUNS
No wonder the queens snap back and get emotional under these conditions

It's easy to look at this video and say "God damn, Drag Race is cruel, brutal, and torture." But what people don't seem to grasp is the rewards that come with being on the show. Drag race has essentially pulled these girls out of poverty. Chichi Devayne went from working two full time jobs to doing drag, Katya was able to pay off her student loans, and Kennedy saved her childhood home. In the Devil's Wear Prada, Emily Blunt's character says "You work a year for her and you can work at any magazine you want." That's Rupaul's drag race, it can makes dreams come true.
Your totally right and if you look at the other queens some of them literally became famous. I'm not gonna judge the show based on what they've said here. I'm just gonna enjoy it and watch them turn themselves into a living art just like Sasha Velour has mentioned that she's a visual artist.

Doesn't just effect contestants but has a knock on effect with the staff. William said on the Race chaser podcast that when they wanted more time to get ready they'd just all do their make up a little slower and demand more time but now contestants can't get away with that and they run on stricter schedules as they can't keep the crew working past certain hours
That's why this season widow von du just got eliminated because she got in her own head. They keep them locked up like that all that stress and stuff get to people head. Some people when feeling down need comfort from others especially family to boost them up but locked up away and no cell phone man that's not right.
