- The deadliest tornado in US history began in Missouri on March 18, 1925. Known as the Tri-State Tornado, the twister went on a path of 219 miles all the way to Indiana.
Lasting just over three hours, the twister broke records for its path and duration. It had winds above 300 miles per hour, and was said to be between 3 quarters of a mile or 1 mile in width. In total, the Tr-State tornado killed 695 people across three states.

This tornado killed my great grandmother. She lived in Parrish, Illinois.
So sad😢
Tri-State tornado may have looked like the Hackleburg-Phil Campbell tornado
I’m thinking it looked like the may 3rd 1999 Moore tornado or the joplin f5.
The tri state tornado is a record holder in some places. But a near record holder and a historical record holder in others.
Tri state tornado 1925, super outbreaks of 1925 and 2011 worst on record
The things Ive read from witnessrs at the school haunt me. People ask why Im so freaked by tornadoes...this storm is my answer.
Tri state tornado 1925, super outbreaks of 1974 and 2011 Joplin, mo
How do you think this event would have stacked up against the El Reno, OK tornado of 2013?
The el reno tornado of 2013 was at 2.6 miles wide twice the width of the tri state tornado which was 1.3 miles wide. Though in 1925 there was no professional or even amateur weather warning system in place also the communication equipment to warn people was lacking the only way was by radio or telephone but these could have been cut off due to the impact of the damaging weather.
el reno was just freaky and massive, damage wise it would be pathetic compared to what tri state did. now el reno at its full intensity and 2.6 miles wide going along the tri state track... obviously it would be pure obliteration
There were areas where people didn't even know that it was a tornado and not a large black cloud or mist until it was almost on top of them during the TriState tornado.
Terrible storms
Now, there is the quad state tornado, from AK, to KY (Mayfield).
That tornado was found to be at least two separate tornadoes.
Unfortunately this will occur again.
