  • Vertical planting is a great way to save space and grow more crops and food. In this video I use some drainage pipe to make a vertical strawberry planter.

Brilliant idea for strawberry tower. I think it will look great when the plants fill out a bit. Loved the David Attenborough impression 😂

Thanks Mags. Hopefully they will survive the transplant this time of year

You've done what I do, worry about the birds eating my strawberries and put a bird feeder to attract the birds next to them 😂

Hi Paul. I was thinking that. Might need to move the feeder. lol

Hi. Lesser spotted lol. I was going to suggest a drain pipe, capped at one end with lots of holes drilled into it. You could sink it in the middle and fill it up with water and nutrients, which will leach out. Great idea though 👍 Elaine 🌱

I am trying to grow my strawberries 🍓 in hanging pots and raised pots this year. But that pipe will be awesome 😎. So took one day off 😂😂. Have a great week Jase, happy growing, Ali 🌞🇨🇦

Been down this Rabbit hole a few years ago and it didn't work for me. I hope you have better success. Something I wish I had done was to put a small (drilled) pipe down the centre, filled with gravel to make watering much easier.

Yea. Watering is a concern. I’ll adapt it if needed

Question: will the pipe leach any chemicals into the soil? If so, how will you mitigate to keep the strawberries safe to eat? Also, I expect with a shovel (or other similar implement) you could 'stir' the soil ever few years to refresh the soil the plants are growing in, and you can replace the older plans every couple of years with the baby plants that the plants you have now throw off annually. You wouldn't need to buy many to replace the older plants. Just me thinking out loud.

Hi Linda. The pipe used is 450mm unperforated drainage pipe used in many applications including stream and river culverts etc. Its is made from High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE), denoted by the number 2 on plastic containers, is considered a safe plastic for food and beverage storage. Unlike some other plastics, HDPE is not known to transmit any harmful chemicals into foods or drinks. It is commonly used for milk or water jugs, laundry detergents, and shampoo bottles. Unlke many cheap plant pots, trays, galvanised raised beds, painted steel beds and treated timber beds people are willing to buy. I will be producing new plants from the runners in 2 years time to produce the following years plants. However I think the soil will be best replaced at that point due to nutrient exhaustion. Please see the link below to a video I did on new strawberry plants from runners.

I am really trying to do much more in the way of vertical growing I was wondering if you think it would be a good idea to layer the compost, leaf mould, wood chips ,seaweed, compost, kitchen waste ? I might try I think that i have some drain pipes at work. I might use 3/4 recycled plastic board in the bottom and drill drainage holes around the bottom. What do you think.

Hi David. I think that’s called composting in place. I’ve not tried it bet others are. I’m sure a UA-cam search would throw up some more info
