- The 'avant-garde' is often used to describe something new or cutting-edge in art but where did the term come from and what does it mean?
Who are the avant-garde and what did they do to become to be known as such?
Emerging in the mid-19th century, the avant-garde received their name for their fighting spirit. Avant-garde is French for ‘vanguard’; a military term used to describe the front-line of an army moving into battle. Artists were compared with these soldiers, as they were often a group force, challenging long-established concepts and ideas about art and fighting an entrenched establishment.
The early avante-garde artists such as Courbet, Gauguin and Kirchner were regarded with great hostility, because they pushed accepted boundaries. As these establishments denied the work public exposure, the avant-garde fought this censorship of their art.

Avant garde today is best illustrated in the novel "Confessions of a Flash Artist" in which what was traditionally frowned upon is elevated into an art form.

Great sound editing, r great performance.... either way!?! Great!!!!!!
Well done!
The music is a little bit too loud !
I always hear this term on music artists, films and arts 🌟
Hipsters love the term.
Avant garde in music means sound used to create emotion most of the time. Usually lacks structure and the sound and atmosphere tell more than the lyrics. Bjork and Julia holter are my favorites.
@@remaininlight9269 I thought it would be informative for an ordinary listener to differentiate in pop and disco .In a band 52 sth smone referred this phrase
do any of you know the title of the music playing on the background?
A rebellion surely metaphors means to abstract : wtf have I just said haha, parable, fixion, spelling, repeat, rewind, progress-ion Scientology meteorology ahhh...

Hi, what program did you use to make this?

Avant garde, postmodern, dada, surrealist
I personally find it hard to draw real lines between these, as they all seem deeply interrelated.
@@PeachPlastic they are. It's a fluid web between them really.
Post modern is post avant garde.
@@PeachPlastic they look the same at the end but the feeling that inspired them is the diference. avant garde like in this video is a challenge to standards and to the classic, surrealist is pretty self explanatory with the objective of representing something that would challenge our reality, postmodernisim challenges logic and reason, but for dada i dont have alot of expirience but it seems like a combination of all before with an intent to insult or make fun of concepts. (english is not my first language sorry but i hope that whoever reads this can understand you dont have to like this type of art and liking it is not proof of superiority over others art is subjective and you can love and appreciate whatever you like dont hate on others for their tastes and be mindful that not everyone has the same likes so use headphones when hearing music and apreciate art in private)
also this is my own opinion so its not like writen on stone and also this terms can be ambiguous and the people that used them may be smarter or dumber than us so use them whoever you like. language is flawed
Is taping a banana to the wall avant-garde?
No. It is conceptual art, an art style that is decades old.
Tell that to Spencer Shay from iCarly.
Avant garde sure breeking new greeownds.

Me: I give you "Teddy in acrylic cube"
Art connoisseur: ah I see brilliant, you're showing how the inner child that is trapped behind an invisible cell, that freedom is within sight but can't escape, and seeing that the bear is unraveling shows that it's aged and might come from a troubled home I say you did an excellent job.
Me: uh I just got bored and went to get resin and a thrift store bear to see what would happen, why am I even here for?

I asked my prof if the feminist movement is avant-garde and she said "no", but she has never given me an explanation. Is this true or false?
I would say yes. In fact one of the leading heads of futuristic (i think) movement wrote a statement (which helped to define futurism) where he mentioned his idea of futuristic woman decribed as open minded, clever, independent and just pretty much not so ,,lady“ like for that time. He also raised his doughter that way. So we could speculate that avantgarde brought the idea that helped to define feminism. Maybe the reason your profesor couldn't explain it to you is simply becouse it was only her opinion without any actual evidence. I am only not sure if it was specifically futurism or a different movement of that time. I think the artist mentioned it in his book called Supermatismus but that does not fit due to it being not futuristic. So I would recommend you to make a little research if you want to have more correct informations.
No, because here we are discussing artistic methods and forms of expression, not gender politics
@@gavinreid5387 I don't know about you but feminism is more outside the political spectrum. Little Women is a primary example of that.
@@poweroffriendship2.0 wdym feminism is out of the political spectrum? Ofc they are included in, it's clearly a leftist idea of equality
