Watching Josh play is just beautiful. The concentration, the composure he regains (pun intended) right after a missplay or a match loss, the souless stare, the precision and mental strength is just kind of art. Bravo.
Josh is absolutely playing out of his mind but he isn't being sarcastic calling it "accidentally". I count his unfavorable matchup because he post all of it in his twitter and for 18 of all match that ycs he genuinely just got 6 bad match and he lost 2 and draw 1 out of it. In top cut he only have to face 1 R-Ace and fortunately lucky to draw the out basically. He 100% deserve the win but he can't just replicate this in any format and any day because of how random the variance is. That's why he's right about just play what he like so even if the luck isn't in his favor at least he have fun.
Tbh it is not true. I am not saying that Bystial Runick is not a good deck because it definitly is. But you have to keep in mind that josh is just a different breed.
I really have to say the cool part of this deck is how everything ties together perfectly. Especially looking at the extra deck and side deck. They feel not like toolboxes but extensions of the actual gameplan & main Deck.
Josh is such a goat for winning with a deck that he picked solely because he likes it, more people should play the stuff they like even if they're not "meta", you can tell how much fun he had with his deck when he talks about the plays he did and the cards he chose, the man is even smiling when he describes how much fun he had, it's so cool and wholesome to see.
To be honest that's a good factor in big tournaments. I saw a sky striker list where the guy ended up in top 32 in a regional where I cant remember (this was months ago) and he said this deck is by no means a meta deck but he only chose to play it because he likes it and is comfortable with piloting it against purrely. Same thing with another branded chimera list, the player said that fatigue does come into play the more rounds you're participating in, so something that you like, are familiar and comfortable playing with definitely helps give you an edge.
That’s what makes these sorts of broad formats good, you can play decks you like without feeling like you’re putting yourself at a massive disadvantage.
My favorite deck to play at the moment is Supreme King (no pend magicians). It’s not meta by any means but it’s decent post AGOV and I personally enjoy dropping Z-ARC on people. And I somehow do way better with that than when I play R-Ace or Lab!
You are an absolute legend. After all your testing, you decided there was no definitive Best Deck that was likely to spike the event, so you literally played a deck you liked that felt on par with the rest of the field. You put in little innovations that made you happy but also gave you strong gameplans against problematic opponents. You are simultaneously the "Respect the metagame. Cards and decks are popular for a reason" and ALSO the "play what you like, play what YOU are good at" and then won the whole thing. Inspiring, wholesome, and completely badass. Thank you for sharing your experiences with the YGO community. My hero!!!
Josh is a true "professional" in every sense. He understands completely how his deck operates, but also understands every other deck he was going to play against and had multiple plays built into his deck that could contest any other deck in the format. This isn't an accident. He likes the deck, because the deck is fun. It has a bunch of non-linear combos, niche interaction points, and an impressive recycling engine.
@_kenemon_ one day on stream, Josh was checking out new sky striker support and said that the only people who get excited about new sky strikers are the ones who see this and go "Oh my God I love Raye I will die for sky striker ace Raye this card is going to change my life .." etc etc. Obviously he was joking around but it became a meme and now that he won with quem people are replacing Raye with her in his copypasta
I've been labbing this concept for the last 6 months, super gratifying to see the theory was actually solid enough to win a ycs. Great win from the world champ.
Literally just wanted to play a deck that made him feel good. Thank you Joshua for reminding us that enjoying the game comes first, winning is just a byproduct.
Duality is one of those cards that no one expects despite how useful it can be when you know what you're doing. And Regained is just stupidly good, not just for recurring your self-banishes, but for occasionally shuffling back an opponent's things that have better utility in both the GY AND banished than the deck(where worst case you can Ash to prevent it from coming out again).
What are you talking about? Duality was very much hyped and expected to be a meta card when it was first revealed. If anything it's kind of a flop relative to how much meta relevance it ended up having.
Usually YCS are won by the strongest decks in their specific format. I think in this case the player really won the tournament and really made the difference. Huge congratulations to you Joshua you absolutely deserved that win
Oh my god yes I love Quem I would die for Guiding Quem The Virtuous. This support card is going to win me a YCS and it's going to be the most expensive card ever.
This is the second time this year that Joshua has caused a card to spike in price everywhere, which isn't a lot, but it's weird how it happened twice :)
like the comment about Branded Regained. I realised it's actually a card that goes kinda crazy even outside of the bystial synergy since some costs/engines require you to remove some of your engine pieces and such but this can help you recycle them and get you a draw, then you add the synergy with bystials and the card is insane.
I think everybody is surprised to see this deck win even after seeing the matches. It can brick and the powercap is not very high, but it has a great grindgame.

But a lot of decks cant really use it that well. Like Josh mentioned duality main point was to dodge effect negation, the metamorphosis effect was a bonus
I mean I use it in Cyber Dragons. It’s really good there because the extra deck monsters in Cydra all mirror each other’s levels. However in terms of actual meta decks many struggle to either find space for it or have good targets.
It’s so bitter sweet for me having built this deck 2 formats ago thought it was such an awesome concept but not the right format I had since quit the game and come to see my idea was the right one Congrats!
I don’t like Runick, but I love Josh’s philosophy of deck building, especially in leaning further into the strengths of the deck with more engine rather than try to fix a problem with the deck that you’re not going to fix with non-engine.
It's so amazing how a good player can make a difference and how this deck was build just with engines that are really well by themselves that can be together in a deck. Also the extradeck is so full of good cards that can be used thanks to duality and full of level 8 synchros. I think it's insane and is an example of a really good player with a really well build deck.
I frown when he starts the video discussing about how open the format is in a negative way after tear and Kash format BUT actually thinking outside the box and playing something like this is why I respect Josh as a player. I hope he continues to play interesting decks to get his wins instead of simply the meta. It’s refreshing to see.
As a bystial enjoyer I approve of this message. And I love that Josh came to my preferred bystial ratio even if it’s just because he had one extra deck slot 🤣

I love runick cuz it prevents the modern yugioh snowball effect of decks and makes the opponent really think about any other plays aside from their standard combos. Feels like old school yugioh even for a little bit.
This winning for me is the representation of what yugioh should be. You pick up the deck that you like, turn it the most competitive as possible showing your skills of deckbuilding, after that, knowing the deck weakness and strongs, play conscious demostrating your skills of playing the game.
