Zoom F3 // Still a Powerful Compact Audio Recorder

- While its been two months since my last video, I wanted to jump on here and discuss why I believe the Zoom F3 might just be one of the best audio recorders/interfaces on the market today in comparison to bigger bulkier audio recorders.
Again, this is a "prosumer" audio field recorder so it won't have some professional level features, but the fact that you can have something this compact with 32 bit float recording, two XLR inputs that can provide 48v phantom power and with relatively reasonable battery-life, says a lot.
Mics used in this video were the DJI Mic 2 kit and the Sennheiser MKH416.
Wow! Great quality sound!!!
Thanks!
F3 is still the best value and performance for a small form / portable recorder with good preamps.
Agreed
Very good!!!!
Thanks!
Dang - it always floors me how amazing that mic sounds - especially compared to lav mics.
It’s a classic.
Thanks for the video
Thanks for checking it out
Mixpre 6 II vs F3 in terms of audio quality in 32 bit float , thoughts ?
I would say the Kashmir preamps are better and a bit cleaner but I don’t think the vast majority of people could tell the difference. One advantage of the Mixpre is that if you’re not recording in 32-bit, it has analogue limiters.
@@xdanielpatrick And my preference is 32 bit float
Oh, the 416 sounds like a 416, i.e. GREAT. I have an abundance of recorders, including the F3, I got it 2nd hand at a good price, and I love its simplicity and size. No MixPre in my arsenal, my top recorder is the F8nPro, but if I had to keep just one device for travels, it would probably be the Tascam X8. It is so much more in functionality than any other recorder I have tried. But the F3 seems ideal for 90+% of youtube projects. Sometimes I do need more than 2 channels, but that is rare, and the BT timecode function is superb useful if I want to sync with my Zoom F2 , Zoom F8nPro or the Tascam X8, literally allowing me to have countless channels :)
@@ww1wwwhave not tried the Tascam recorders yet but I’m glad they are working for you! I hear the dial on the x6 or x8 is a little gimmicky but otherwise it’s a great recorder. That F8Pro does look enticing for the dual sd card recording (for pro work that requires redundancy) but I have to admit the zoom f3 could totally suffice as my only audio recorder at the moment…
@@xdanielpatrick Not gimmicky, but people do not understand the purpose :) Everything is intended to be used and adjusted through the touchscreen, the big dial helps to adjust the selected sliders very smoothly and precisely. Now, as the X8 can be used not just as a recorder, but also as podcast studio, mixer, DSP processor (eg. set manual EQ), sometimes you need more precision than what you would achieve by sliding your sticky fingers on the LCD. :) Anyway, I am planning to play with my F3 this weekend on a project in which its size and form factor might make it a winner.
Can't get mine to work. I'll figure it out no mic signal with 48v... Lav mics are not directional,.. Too much background noise... Keep it up!
Appreciate it. Could it be the XLR cable you are using?
