  • I rejuvenated some of the soil that we used last year, and used it in our containers, grow bags, and in our straw bales. I had very good results with it, with the exception of one potato and one sweet potato. If you want to see some of the things we produced with the remixed soil, you can take at look at the 5:04 minute mark.
    I didn't use any nitrogen with the mix that went in the grow bags, because some the new soil I used had nitrogen in it. In later batches, I added some blood meal to go with the rock phosphate and kelp meal. Overall, I would say that it worked out very well, and I was really pleased with the result.
    The Yellow Jersey Sweet Potatoes we grew in the mix: • Grow Bag Sweet Potato ...
    The Yucon Gold Potatoes we grew in the mix: • Grow Bag Potato Harves...

    I never took that in consideration. But as I go through as many gardening presentations as I can, to learn as much as I can. I didn’t think of that. I love learning about plants. I’ve just been educated. Thank you.

      Well, I've found that I probably learn more from commenters than they learn from me. I hadn't really thought enough about those who find my videos that aren't subscribers. Your comment was very helpful in that regard. I actually made a change to my default uploads. Now future descriptions will have my location.

    Rejuvenating used soil is good info. We usually use worm castings and coconut coir, but a couple of the ingredients that you use we will have to look into. To not do it isn't always a problem for us, but when it is it quickly can become big problem. Good stuff. Thanks for the share!

      Those worm castings sure sound good. I wish I had a cheap source for those.

      Hey, thanks Duke! It's like any other year, some of it worked out pretty well, and a few things didn't. But we're happy with what we got.

      Thanks CB! It seemed to work pretty well on most stuff, but for a couple of the grow bags not so much.

    Well, I think the grow bags and pots are gonna work real well for me, but not right now. I just went out and found my baby collards and beets laying over like they had been treated with boiling water. It's 93 degrees in the shade here in NW FL. I took the thermometer off the wall and laid it beside one of the plants. 120 degrees. It just doesn't feel like fall here.

      Yep, those kinds of temps will cook plants in a hurry. We've even been pretty warm lately up here. You might have to try again when it cools a bit.

    Good morning. Thank you for sharing what you do. That really help us a lot. I used 5 gal. Containers. I didn't give anything enough nutrients as I see. Nothing really came out of them. So now I can do better. On yesterday I went outside and picked about 20 green worms off my cabbage and collards. I sprayed neem oil and dawn and water mixture over them. Now I saw a video that said to keep slugs off get sand and put that around the plants. So now I have a reason to go shopping. Lol. I also believe I see about 3 spinach plants coming up. Or it's a different kind of weed. So until I get to the store I put newspaper around each cabbage plant. Of course as always have an awesome day

      Well, we all have to make adjustments. I just do things, see how it works, and then go from there. Sometimes even with our best efforts things just don't work out. Like my two types of potatoes. They were grown side by side, and one of them did very well, and one did not. Cool that you might have some spinach coming up! When they first sprout, the leaves are very thin looking. Then the next set of leaves will get more round looking. Thanks for watching 😀👍

      Thanks Sasha! It was a pretty good year for most things, but for my tomatoes it was kind of a bad year. I'm ready for whatever mother nature has to dish out next year though :) When I mentioned mother nature, it reminded me of P.C. Have you heard anything for her/him? It's been several weeks, and I hope nothing bad has happened.

    Very prolific. Most gardeners don’ t give they’re zone and or state or town. Most soils are either clay or sandy or a combination of these in whatever percentage. When you say garden soil it may make a difference to some trying your combination. So many factors determine success. Porous soil and nutrients are essential. As is water and weather...not to mention diseases and pests to learn about. But my point is giving a zone or state a gardener is in is essential to understand that gardeners success. No criticism intended, it’s just that I watch gardening shows all the time and it would be very helpful if zone were given. Enjoyed your presentation. Thank you.

      Thanks Candy! Yes, all the variables you mention are important. Just changing a thing or two can make a big difference. I give my zone and state pretty often, so most of my subscribers already know it. I used to put it in the description for every video. I might start doing that again. Some of my most helpful comments are critical ones, whether intended or not :) I really appreciate this thoughtful comment! I will sure keep it in mind for future videos. Thanks again.

    All your plants were so loaded with fruit...do you add any other plant food during the season?

    • @MidwestGardener
      @MidwestGardener  4 роки тому +1

      I usually do a few times to the straw bales, but not too much out i the main garden.

  • @gforcekaras
    @gforcekaras 3 роки тому +1

    Do you amend the soil as the season progress? Or fertilize with on a scheduled basis?

    • @MidwestGardener
      @MidwestGardener  3 роки тому

      I usually do not. I have in our straw bales before, before I started growing sweet potatoes. Since I started growing sweet potatoes in the bales, I don't fertilize those....except for that is used when I condition then. It wouldn't hurt to add some fertilizer mid season though. I know that a lot of people use fertilizer on a regular basis, but if and when I use fertilizer, it might be once or twice during the season....depending on the plant. Many of the plants out in the main garden don't get any fertilizer at all, except for homemade compost when I plant them.

  • @billybass6419

    You don't add perlite or vermiculite to your soil mix?

  • @C3Voyage
    @C3Voyage 5 років тому +1

    Soil mix and a recap too. Bonus! Did you use regular watering with a liquid fertilizer? Or, did you add like a 10-10-10?

    • @MidwestGardener
      @MidwestGardener  5 років тому

      I watered the straw bales, grow bags and containers daily except when it rained or there was very mild temps. I did fertilize the straw bales on a fairly regular basis with liquid fertilizer, but I haven't fertilized them in a while. I hit the grow bags a couple of times with liquid fertilizer, but I didn't do them more because they seemed to be growing too much vegetation as it was. The containers I started out fertilizing every couple of weeks, but slacked off on that about mid summer and they haven't seen anything but water in a quite a while now.

      Good to know. I need to dial in the no-fuss garden containers (outside) a little better. I think I can go much weaker with nutrient if I enrich the containers with compost. Will give it a go.

    • @MidwestGardener
      @MidwestGardener  5 років тому

      Yeah, it might be worth at least testing a few to see how it works. I don't really have a set way of doing any of it. I usually just start with some kind of plan and then change and tweak as I go depending on what happens.
