I love the part where people come into the comments and immediately talk about how you can't be a real dj with a controller. A professional is a professional in the end regardless of the gear you play on.
This isn't true, you can dj on what you like, hell use sync if you want.but if you cant beatmatch. mix in key and in phrase then you are not a dj, if you use sync and can't manually beatch you have no right to be on any gear, you are only real if you can mix on anyhting

I used to have a bumper sticker on my car that says "Stock engine, modified driver" lol. I used to DJ back in the late 80's and 90's and started out with cheap numark turntables and a friend who also a dj had Technics SL1200s and expensive equip made fun of my equipment. I practiced every single day and got really good that I've gotten gigs every weekend until I was able to get the 1200s. Then my friend who had expensive equip asked me if he could partner with me. It's not the equip, it's how you spin.

Bro that "Allows Suprise" Thing happend to me when I played on a techno rave in Germany. I came with a Pioneer Wego 2 and next to me was a Denon Prime Player on which everybody before me played. After I played my set I practiced for 2 weeks including transitions etc. everybody came to me asked for soundcloud etc. because a lot of people were lightly said "suspectful" but we're suprised 5 mins into the set as I played the right tracks with simple but effective transitions. If you drive 300kmh with a Porsche nobody will be suprised, do it with an old VW and they surely will be
I was judged for using a small controller before, until I started playing my set. I was then given respect for my music selection, presentation and paying attention to the crowd . I ended up gotten more bookings from all those events. Believe in yourself and your craft.
I remember blowing people's minds with some of the tricks I used to do on an old CD mixer...it's true if you can DJ it don't matter what you use... I saved my niece's wedding last year using phones and an old mackie mixing board..it was a fun challenge..which sparked the desire to start DJing again I like that you just do you. Can't agree with what you said enough!
Great topic man 👍🏼. I’ll never understand why DJ’ing is really the only industry that judges it’s own on what equipment they use rather than the actual purpose of DJ’ing. Insecurity is my only assumption. Song Selection/Mixing and crowd reaction is all that should matter!
well, the entertainment industry in general is very judgy and filled with egomaniacs and hipsters that lack the ability to judge beyond just the surface. The music industry is probably the most superficial of all. But similar things happen in the fashion world. if something is expensive and you don't have it, there is pressure from peers and others to buy it. I never got with that mindset. I just like what I like...

Respect for this one! It's so true too. I have been Dj'ing for 20 years and from 2007 to 2012 I used a Behringer bcd3000. And I have the pleasure to rock many large Raves, festivals and even clubs like the old Mighty in SF with that small controller. Many people that had seen me throw down on it nicked named it my "Tonka Toy".I would always just show up with my backpack with It and my laptop and plug in and throw down. I used Traktor pro as my software and I had totally remapped the controller to do crazy things with a lot of modifiers. So I was doing a lot of crazy effects combo's and cue point jumping and crazy looping. It was a lot of work, but so much fun to watch people trip out when I busted it out. And for me, I also started from Vinyl back in 95, but I looked at this as the future. And I always say, "PROGRESSION, NOT REGRESSION!"

I have been using my same Pioneer Wego 1 for more than 5 years now. I have rocked bars, big clubs, and weddings. Doesnt matter what I use as long as I can play well n everyone enjoys the music. I love my controller because of the portability, i carry the controller, laptop, headphones, n various cables all in one bag. Thinking of upgrading by the end of this year tho LOL. Just to treat myself.
Bro. I'm the same like you. I started with technics 1200 mk2. However, I stopped djing for like about 18 years. I just recently started to get back into it. Bought my beginner controller witch is a DDJ Wego 4. I love it. I can do what I want on it. Made my transition back to djing very smoothly.
Exactly. When I used to DJ a lot I mostly used 1200s x2 and a simple Numark mixer. Did everything manually with simple techniques that just required practice to nail. I splurged on Technics decks from the get go but never upgraded a thing in years. When I wanted to play tunes for which I had no vinyl I become a fairly early adopter of of Final Scratch - then 'the day job' took over and DJing sunk back to being just a hobby. Eventually, having the decks but no time - or much space - become depressing so I sold them. But the point is this: The a small, cheap 'consumer' digital DJ controller with Serato (or the other major tools) can do 100x more than the kit I used for years more easily and more conveniently. I love mine (DDJ-SB3) and it's fun to show off at gatherings and do the odd set in local pubs and clubs. Ultimately, the skills and theory of essential DJing remain the same. It's just a tool.
@@12tribes61 to be honest I have never had a problem. If I DJ at a really big venue with big sound systems, they have always had their own mixer for the event and I just plug my cheap controller into one of their channels :-) I only get booked as a DJ and not for big events. I have a PA system that can cater for weddings, speakers and amplifier. My controller does the job fine.

I'm a old school DJ from the 70's - 90's. Your last statement is the whole reason we play is to keep the people on the floor. I understand when other DJ's wanted to say something negative, I told my crew not to get on the microphone and say anything back because the proof is in the pudding, I never had any problem keeping the people on the floor, no matter if it were a fast or slow song. This was way before social media, all word of mouth. This is a true story, we didn't have a gig this one Saturday, but people had put the word out that we were going to play at this location that we frequently played and all these people were going now the word got back to us and we were able to get the building and packed it out. We used a small Numark mixer, two Technic 1200 turntables, a couple Peavey amps and some homemade speaker. Our bass cabinets we took two of the kitchen cabinet for your kitchen sink and made double woofers and early Peavey SP2 I think for the top and later we were able to get a pair of SP1's. We also made a couple light racks with color flood lights out of the metal center of some spools from my job and metal pipes, wire and wall sockets. The light box was a wooden box and I wired it up with some (on) and (off) switches and one of my partner added a neck tie so he was able to hang it around his neck. So I know it wasn't about what you had but what you could do with it to keep the party jumping. I've been looking into investing into the Pioneer SB3 or the 400. I haven't played in years but I had the opportunity play with someone's Numark controller and it stirred up the fire because I love to mix music. These new machine their is so many new things you can do now compared to back then.
i did that when i had my Traktor s2 mk11 . people was crazy when they saw what that "toy" can do. but he is %100 right.Most people really want to impress other Dj's or whoever and lose focus on the crowd. i use turntables cause that is the set up that i am most comfortable with. but the ddj-1000 is one for my future. love that thing and it is very easy to carry around with me.
as long you making people dance... who cares if you are playing from a toy controller, a lot of people lost sensitivity because on what expensive your gear it is... fuck is not about that is about making people dance have a good time, otherwise. if you just want to be the cool DJ, hey look at me, yeah get expensive gear and flex on people

I have technics. It's because it's from 25 million years ago. If I was a dj today, I wouldn't dare use turntables, unless it's timecoded because skipping records sucks. These controllers are awesome and would love to one day own one.

Yet another video I can 100% agree with! Before buying my Numark NVII, I used to DJ at all my gigs with just a Pioneer DDJ-SB2. Everything worked out perfectly fine, I didn't face any issues for more than 2 years and people were always satisfied with my performance. The only reason why I got the NVII was the XLR connectivity - it's just more convenient being able to plug the controller directly into large PA systems, instead of having to interpose additional amps or adaptors. The screens are also a major plus, since they make it easier for me to interact with the crowd, instead of having to stare at my laptop all the time.
couldnt of said it better myself and although, i do not dj anymore, there has been countless times in the past where I would just smile and nod, agreeing with what everybody else has to say, which in turn almost always usually, is just passively boosting them selves as being better then they really are. I know you know what I'm trying to say so I'll just end it there. So happy that I found somebody that actually nailed it, in terms of what a "good" dj is, and was able to explain it while staying 100% humble.
Damn brother you really spell it out well. I totally agree with all your points. plus I see it this way, if you are good with an entry level gear, chances are you are way better with a professional unit. At the end DJ is about putting up a good show that keep most of the people happy and having a good time. Most people at the event do not care about what you use but how you play and sound. I know this is an old video but definitely true. I started DJ'ing when I was 15, in 1986 with vinyl. My parents got me 2 sanyo belt drive turntables that had pitch and an audio technica mixer. I practiced for hours every day with Freestyle music. My homie who is a great DJ that had 1200's could never get a mix off on my belt drive turntables. I started again with a Numark Mixtrack Pro at 38 years old and had to learn all over again, but once I mastered the controller, I could rock that shit. Now at 49 years old I am using an SB2 and can still rock it. I played a party as a favor for a friend and was piggy backing off his $1000 Denon controller with my little SB2. He sounded like caca and I had the party jamming with my little SB2. You are right my friend, does not matter the controller, its how you use it..... I will admit, I just ordered the DDJ 800 though..lol
Mad props. There’s no better feeling then clowning well known DJs using way cheaper gear. I remember learning to beat match on *cough* BELT DRIVEN turntables. At an impromptu after party, no one had their turntables with them, so I brought mine. I got some funny looks, and even funnier attempts to DJ by the headliners of the event it was an after party for. One simply declared “its impossible to DJ on these crappy tables”. He couldn’t get a beat to match for even a few seconds. After that I got behind them and rode out mixes with both tables playing at the same time for over half the length of each track without a single trainwreck. I even did some elementary scratching and beat dropping. The hype from that after party got me my first booking at a real event, with the standard Tech 12’s, and truth be told it was only my 2nd time using “real” turntables when I took the stage. I crushed it, and realized, “holy sh*t DJing is soooo much easier with good equipment.” It wasn’t long after I bought my first pair of Technics, but still, if you get good on crappy equipment, you are setting yourself up to be more creative, quicker and better at fixing imperfections before they become noticeable to 99.95% of the audience, and the foundation it gives you sets you up to be successful on whatever equipment may be thrown your way. There’s a huge difference between entry-level controllers and belt driven turntables, but the same can be said about them. If you can outshine others with cheap gear, what may start as funny looks and people mocking you can turn into serious respect once they see (and hear) what you can do with it. At some point though, I feel like the limits of the equipment may make it worth upgrading as you progress, especially if it seems you’ve reached a plateau caused directly by it’s limitations.
Yes, I agree with the comments about your video. I was looking to replace my Denon DNMC6000 and Denon HD2500. But they still work awesome! Your video showed me that I can still rock the party with older simple gear and still be relevant. Thanks for helping me see how to use what I have well. Keep making videos.
Yo I tell people that alllll the freaking time that it DOES NOT, DOES NOT matter about the Gear you use people! It is the person behind the decks or the controller that makes the music play and does the mixing. And you dint need a big expensive setup to make a good performance. Sometimes it not necessary because that obviously means you are compensating for your lack of skills if you have to have a full expensive setup. And just because you use a "entry" level controller doesn't mean you dont know how to play on professional gear. Good video bro hopefully this motivates people to actually hone in on the skills of djing and not worry so much about the gear they have. Props man
Well said my friend. I own a DDJSX2, a Gemini G4V and a Numark DJ2Go. Had the Gemini first. Then I eventually got the other 2. I transitioned from the turntables to the controller for some of those same reasons. Mainly because carrying the gear and crates of vinyl were killing my back. Now everything is much easier for me to carry around. Most of the gigs I play they know my reputation. If I were to bring something small like the SB it wouldn't matter to them because they have already heard my sets except for the handful that never heard me, but I often tell those people that same thing you just said. I love your reasoning. I've been using the small and powerful Xone K2, which is $380. However when I've bought the big heavy and much costlier Traktor S4 Mk3, my DJing style changed and DJing became easier because every feature has a dedicated button or knob. I still use the K2 for traveling. Highly recommended.

Good points and encouraging for me, as I couldn't begin to judge anyone else about this stuff. And taking your advice, not ashamed to say I'm a newbie. I already play/sing in a band, (where you def get judged based on your equipment) but I got a chance to dj a birthday party for about 75 people yesterday and I picked up an even cheaper, smaller controller (numark party mix), using Serato lite. I already had all the other gear I needed, mixer, laptop, PA, lights, etc. You know, looking back, it's funny, not one person there asked what I was using to go from song to song... they were too busy dancing and having fun I guess. I was being paid well to begin with, but they wanted more time, and so they paid me more. I'm planning on more gigs, like that and I just need to be able to "control" what's up next ....that's all I'm gonna be needing. I may move to the SB3 just to have access to 4 channels though and keep the little numark as a backup. Thanks.
Hey Scott, I also use a numark party mix and i do rock some crazy sets with it (the place i play ocasionally have a 800 people maximum capacity, and it's normally at it's full). I'm planning on switching because i do feel a little "blocked" by some of this controllers limitations (lack of dedicated loop deck and effects knobs/panel), but you got the gist of it: it's not the equipment, it's how you use it and how you rock a crowd! If you and your crowd are happy with how you sound, that's just what you need :D

I remember we would also cover the song on the Vinyl so people will not know what I am playing lol. I can look back now and say that was cocky lol. It got to the point where I realized we can help one another (or like the saying goes share the wealth). We can all learn from each other and that my friend can expand our knowledge of the craft!! Plus opinions there are a dozen at every corner. We forget that we are offering a service and atleast try to be a bit humble so we can accomodate the onses who are paying us. Just found this video in 2021 And I do agree using small compact entry level controller gives me lots of advantages Easy to carry all the gears all by myself, it is so safe to check before play. I can barely bring my Numark Mixtrack Platinum FX, laptop, camera, tripod, small balanced output mixer, and even my own cables in one way travel Moreover, I know my gears and I can maximize them because I acknowledged all the features and capabilities of that controller 🔥🔥🔥

Exactly man! I started off on my phone using the free Djay app. From there moved to a sb2 using serato. At first I was pretty trash. And I wanted to be able to make smooth transitions, like I would on the Djay app. After a while, I've gotten very confident using an sb2. It doesn't matter what you use, it's how you use it! Edit: I dj mostly techno and house. As low as 118 bpm to as high as 135 bpm.
Your video is on point! I couldn't agree with you more. I own a DDJ SX2 and DDJ SX3. There were many times I wish I had a "smaller" controller instead of hauling around a coffin with either of my SX controllers. I recently bought a SB3. It works out perfectly for bar gigs, small events, etc... where a full size, fully loaded controller isn't really needed. Bruh... it's not always about the gear, but it's always about how you use it... Excellent content!
Agree. I'm not bringing a super heavy expensive set up when I can bring a lightweight inexpensive controller instead. I can do almost everything anyone else can do with a cheap SB. yes I have tables, and a SX, but I find myself grabbing the SB because its light and cheap. If something was to go wrong in the DJ booth, just toss in the trash and grab another. DJs always have something to say, but I can do just about anything I want with a SB. They may be an intro unit, but they do a lot for such a small cheap product.
DJ CURRENSY I agree. Setting up my turntables consists of multiple trips to truck and lots of setup time. Hoping a new 2 channel controller hits the market with moving platters.

You've made remind myself that i've actually FORGOT this kind of thinking. I've started djing with a ddj sb 1 just for fun, 4 years ago, then i updgraded to a ddj sx2, replaced the windows laptop with a mac and started to get gigs, so i started to pursuit "the other djs respect" by mixing within every platform (vinyl, dvs, cdj, controller), then i bought a pair of plx 1000, now an allen & heath xone 43c mixer and an addon controller (pioneer xp1), and i still have plans to buy another entire setup (2 xdj 1000 mk2 and a djm 750mk2). I just forgot what i said to my friends, something like "rock that party no matter what setup do you use". I've rocked a lot of parties with a sb and an windows laptop, now i have a bunch of fancy, expensive and heavy cases/gear, hard to carry, hard to store, hard to mount/dismount... =/

The basics and foundation of any concept , idea, philosophy always rely on mastering the basics. Any " advancements" are really costumes hidden over basics . Doing rooftops and private and beach parties with it connected to an external mixer via AUX cables because o could afford a dj controller. And i did great. Now that i have a controller - hercules inpulse 500 - i dont see myself buying an premium one anytime soon because i love it and it works great for me !!!!
100% respect brotha. I couldn’t agree more with you. I love seeing whack ass wedding DJS come with full Nexus setups and use timecode with no mixing. Or the typical “ I started on 1200s and vinyl” bro-dude that has to first justify what he started out with and now uses a “controller”. I guarantee you that if the technology today in 2019 was available back in the 90s those same DJs would be using it instead of bringing milk crates of vinyl, turntables and mixers.
Ryan J lol timecode on Nexus setups is one of my pet peeves. Don’t get me wrong, sometimes there are needs for it. But most times, they just don’t know how to setup HID mode.

I started on a controller and moved to turntables. I still have my ddj-sr 2 but really prefer the moving platters but hate setting up my rig and balancing my tone arms etc etc. I’m really hoping Rane comes out with a 2 channel controller with moving platters or Numark down sizes the ns7 II because for a controller that big and heavy I’ll stick with my turntable set up.
I use my SB3 when I travel and it's awesome. I also own tables, cdj's and the Roland 505 and DDJ-SX3 but for traveling and smaller gigs the SB3 is perfect to travel with even on the plane.
This guy is amazing and very accurate. I started off on vinyl, then got into virtual dj and then serato on a borrowed NS6 controller. I saved up money to buy the NS7II, a monster of a controller and difficult to carry around especially when you add the weight of the odyssey flight case. That controller was my baby until it began to malfunction. That's when I purchased the ddjSB3 and my life changed forever. I seriously wish I discovered the sb3 before. The functionality rivals the high end controller and it's so light you can carry it in the case with 1 finger. He's right, people judge and pass remarks until I spin and rock the house. I love the before and after reaction.... Priceless! You're one of my idols dude. Peter Piper routine was totally kick ass. I want to improve my scratching and I can only hope to be as good as you one day.

Great video! I was at a party once and the dj was using the Pioneer WeeGo and he turned the party OUUUUUTTT! So much so I took an interest in seeing this little controller and true it is nice to have something small to go with at times. You never know how things will be at a location. This was not at a club but a theatre event. Yes yes....props for the music and that is what matters most. In fact, I did not look down at him it made me more interested in his work and the controller. I was actually part of the tech crew and helping set up for the event that time instead of dj'ing. A DJ is a DJ bcuz anyone can call themself a DJ these days. There are many but the real DJs are few. So a professional DJ can use any equipment and rock the house. I remeber my buddy useto say its the Driver and not the car that wins the race.....Nice video Bro. 99% of the people on the floor could careless about your equipment as long as you are rocking the house. I do a weekly livestream at Ruff Start Radio. One time I was going to be out of town for my night, so I did a 2 hour recorded set on a Numark Dj2go2. The owner of the station loved the set because my song selection was on point and my transitions were tight.

I used to make the mistake of listening to everybody about everything. But when you qualify the advice you are learning, it’s easier to wade out the bad advice. You don’t owe it to anyone to impress them. Do it because you love it despite what anyone else, including other DJs, think. Good luck!

This. I started on Gemini mixer and belt-drive decks. by the time i could afford tech12s, i knew wth i was doing already and knew how to take advantage of the better performance. kids who get given a $1000 guitar don't get better faster than a kid who bought a $200 squire with his own money. the latter person is motivated and will learn on anything.
I love the part where people come into the comments and immediately talk about how you can't be a real dj with a controller. A professional is a professional in the end regardless of the gear you play on.
This isn't true, you can dj on what you like, hell use sync if you want.but if you cant beatmatch. mix in key and in phrase then you are not a dj, if you use sync and can't manually beatch you have no right to be on any gear, you are only real if you can mix on anyhting

I used to have a bumper sticker on my car that says "Stock engine, modified driver" lol. I used to DJ back in the late 80's and 90's and started out with cheap numark turntables and a friend who also a dj had Technics SL1200s and expensive equip made fun of my equipment. I practiced every single day and got really good that I've gotten gigs every weekend until I was able to get the 1200s. Then my friend who had expensive equip asked me if he could partner with me. It's not the equip, it's how you spin.

Bro that "Allows Suprise" Thing happend to me when I played on a techno rave in Germany. I came with a Pioneer Wego 2 and next to me was a Denon Prime Player on which everybody before me played. After I played my set I practiced for 2 weeks including transitions etc. everybody came to me asked for soundcloud etc. because a lot of people were lightly said "suspectful" but we're suprised 5 mins into the set as I played the right tracks with simple but effective transitions. If you drive 300kmh with a Porsche nobody will be suprised, do it with an old VW and they surely will be
I was judged for using a small controller before, until I started playing my set. I was then given respect for my music selection, presentation and paying attention to the crowd . I ended up gotten more bookings from all those events. Believe in yourself and your craft.
I remember blowing people's minds with some of the tricks I used to do on an old CD mixer...it's true if you can DJ it don't matter what you use... I saved my niece's wedding last year using phones and an old mackie mixing board..it was a fun challenge..which sparked the desire to start DJing again

well, the entertainment industry in general is very judgy and filled with egomaniacs and hipsters that lack the ability to judge beyond just the surface. The music industry is probably the most superficial of all. But similar things happen in the fashion world. if something is expensive and you don't have it, there is pressure from peers and others to buy it. I never got with that mindset. I just like what I like...

Respect for this one! It's so true too. I have been Dj'ing for 20 years and from 2007 to 2012 I used a Behringer bcd3000. And I have the pleasure to rock many large Raves, festivals and even clubs like the old Mighty in SF with that small controller. Many people that had seen me throw down on it nicked named it my "Tonka Toy".I would always just show up with my backpack with It and my laptop and plug in and throw down. I used Traktor pro as my software and I had totally remapped the controller to do crazy things with a lot of modifiers. So I was doing a lot of crazy effects combo's and cue point jumping and crazy looping. It was a lot of work, but so much fun to watch people trip out when I busted it out. And for me, I also started from Vinyl back in 95, but I looked at this as the future. And I always say, "PROGRESSION, NOT REGRESSION!"

I have been using my same Pioneer Wego 1 for more than 5 years now. I have rocked bars, big clubs, and weddings. Doesnt matter what I use as long as I can play well n everyone enjoys the music. I love my controller because of the portability, i carry the controller, laptop, headphones, n various cables all in one bag. Thinking of upgrading by the end of this year tho LOL. Just to treat myself.

Bro. I'm the same like you. I started with technics 1200 mk2. However, I stopped djing for like about 18 years. I just recently started to get back into it. Bought my beginner controller witch is a DDJ Wego 4. I love it. I can do what I want on it. Made my transition back to djing very smoothly.

Exactly. When I used to DJ a lot I mostly used 1200s x2 and a simple Numark mixer. Did everything manually with simple techniques that just required practice to nail. I splurged on Technics decks from the get go but never upgraded a thing in years. When I wanted to play tunes for which I had no vinyl I become a fairly early adopter of of Final Scratch - then 'the day job' took over and DJing sunk back to being just a hobby. Eventually, having the decks but no time - or much space - become depressing so I sold them.
But the point is this: The a small, cheap 'consumer' digital DJ controller with Serato (or the other major tools) can do 100x more than the kit I used for years more easily and more conveniently. I love mine (DDJ-SB3) and it's fun to show off at gatherings and do the odd set in local pubs and clubs. Ultimately, the skills and theory of essential DJing remain the same. It's just a tool.
@@12tribes61 to be honest I have never had a problem. If I DJ at a really big venue with big sound systems, they have always had their own mixer for the event and I just plug my cheap controller into one of their channels :-)
I only get booked as a DJ and not for big events. I have a PA system that can cater for weddings, speakers and amplifier. My controller does the job fine.

I'm a old school DJ from the 70's - 90's. Your last statement is the whole reason we play is to keep the people on the floor. I understand when other DJ's wanted to say something negative, I told my crew not to get on the microphone and say anything back because the proof is in the pudding, I never had any problem keeping the people on the floor, no matter if it were a fast or slow song. This was way before social media, all word of mouth. This is a true story, we didn't have a gig this one Saturday, but people had put the word out that we were going to play at this location that we frequently played and all these people were going now the word got back to us and we were able to get the building and packed it out. We used a small Numark mixer, two Technic 1200 turntables, a couple Peavey amps and some homemade speaker. Our bass cabinets we took two of the kitchen cabinet for your kitchen sink and made double woofers and early Peavey SP2 I think for the top and later we were able to get a pair of SP1's. We also made a couple light racks with color flood lights out of the metal center of some spools from my job and metal pipes, wire and wall sockets. The light box was a wooden box and I wired it up with some (on) and (off) switches and one of my partner added a neck tie so he was able to hang it around his neck. So I know it wasn't about what you had but what you could do with it to keep the party jumping. I've been looking into investing into the Pioneer SB3 or the 400. I haven't played in years but I had the opportunity play with someone's Numark controller and it stirred up the fire because I love to mix music. These new machine their is so many new things you can do now compared to back then.
i did that when i had my Traktor s2 mk11 . people was crazy when they saw what that "toy" can do. but he is %100 right.Most people really want to impress other Dj's or whoever and lose focus on the crowd. i use turntables cause that is the set up that i am most comfortable with. but the ddj-1000 is one for my future. love that thing and it is very easy to carry around with me.

Yet another video I can 100% agree with! Before buying my Numark NVII, I used to DJ at all my gigs with just a Pioneer DDJ-SB2. Everything worked out perfectly fine, I didn't face any issues for more than 2 years and people were always satisfied with my performance. The only reason why I got the NVII was the XLR connectivity - it's just more convenient being able to plug the controller directly into large PA systems, instead of having to interpose additional amps or adaptors. The screens are also a major plus, since they make it easier for me to interact with the crowd, instead of having to stare at my laptop all the time.
couldnt of said it better myself and although, i do not dj anymore, there has been countless times in the past where I would just smile and nod, agreeing with what everybody else has to say, which in turn almost always usually, is just passively boosting them selves as being better then they really are. I know you know what I'm trying to say so I'll just end it there. So happy that I found somebody that actually nailed it, in terms of what a "good" dj is, and was able to explain it while staying 100% humble.

I totally agree with all your points. plus I see it this way, if you are good with an entry level gear, chances are you are way better with a professional unit. At the end DJ is about putting up a good show that keep most of the people happy and having a good time. Most people at the event do not care about what you use but how you play and sound. I know this is an old video but definitely true. I started DJ'ing when I was 15, in 1986 with vinyl. My parents got me 2 sanyo belt drive turntables that had pitch and an audio technica mixer. I practiced for hours every day with Freestyle music. My homie who is a great DJ that had 1200's could never get a mix off on my belt drive turntables. I started again with a Numark Mixtrack Pro at 38 years old and had to learn all over again, but once I mastered the controller, I could rock that shit. Now at 49 years old I am using an SB2 and can still rock it. I played a party as a favor for a friend and was piggy backing off his $1000 Denon controller with my little SB2. He sounded like caca and I had the party jamming with my little SB2. You are right my friend, does not matter the controller, its how you use it..... I will admit, I just ordered the DDJ 800 though..lol

Mad props. There’s no better feeling then clowning well known DJs using way cheaper gear.
I remember learning to beat match on *cough* BELT DRIVEN turntables. At an impromptu after party, no one had their turntables with them, so I brought mine. I got some funny looks, and even funnier attempts to DJ by the headliners of the event it was an after party for. One simply declared “its impossible to DJ on these crappy tables”. He couldn’t get a beat to match for even a few seconds.
After that I got behind them and rode out mixes with both tables playing at the same time for over half the length of each track without a single trainwreck. I even did some elementary scratching and beat dropping. The hype from that after party got me my first booking at a real event, with the standard Tech 12’s, and truth be told it was only my 2nd time using “real” turntables when I took the stage. I crushed it, and realized, “holy sh*t DJing is soooo much easier with good equipment.”
It wasn’t long after I bought my first pair of Technics, but still, if you get good on crappy equipment, you are setting yourself up to be more creative, quicker and better at fixing imperfections before they become noticeable to 99.95% of the audience, and the foundation it gives you sets you up to be successful on whatever equipment may be thrown your way.
There’s a huge difference between entry-level controllers and belt driven turntables, but the same can be said about them. If you can outshine others with cheap gear, what may start as funny looks and people mocking you can turn into serious respect once they see (and hear) what you can do with it.
At some point though, I feel like the limits of the equipment may make it worth upgrading as you progress, especially if it seems you’ve reached a plateau caused directly by it’s limitations.
Yes, I agree with the comments about your video. I was looking to replace my Denon DNMC6000 and Denon HD2500. But they still work awesome! Your video showed me that I can still rock the party with older simple gear and still be relevant. Thanks for helping me see how to use what I have well. Keep making videos.
Yo I tell people that alllll the freaking time that it DOES NOT, DOES NOT matter about the Gear you use people! It is the person behind the decks or the controller that makes the music play and does the mixing. And you dint need a big expensive setup to make a good performance. Sometimes it not necessary because that obviously means you are compensating for your lack of skills if you have to have a full expensive setup. And just because you use a "entry" level controller doesn't mean you dont know how to play on professional gear. Good video bro hopefully this motivates people to actually hone in on the skills of djing and not worry so much about the gear they have. Props man

Well said my friend. I own a DDJSX2, a Gemini G4V and a Numark DJ2Go. Had the Gemini first. Then I eventually got the other 2. I transitioned from the turntables to the controller for some of those same reasons. Mainly because carrying the gear and crates of vinyl were killing my back. Now everything is much easier for me to carry around. Most of the gigs I play they know my reputation. If I were to bring something small like the SB it wouldn't matter to them because they have already heard my sets except for the handful that never heard me, but I often tell those people that same thing you just said. Just sit back and listen. Thanks for the video.

I love your reasoning. I've been using the small and powerful Xone K2, which is $380. However when I've bought the big heavy and much costlier Traktor S4 Mk3, my DJing style changed and DJing became easier because every feature has a dedicated button or knob. I still use the K2 for traveling. Highly recommended.

Good points and encouraging for me, as I couldn't begin to judge anyone else about this stuff. And taking your advice, not ashamed to say I'm a newbie. I already play/sing in a band, (where you def get judged based on your equipment) but I got a chance to dj a birthday party for about 75 people yesterday and I picked up an even cheaper, smaller controller (numark party mix), using Serato lite. I already had all the other gear I needed, mixer, laptop, PA, lights, etc. You know, looking back, it's funny, not one person there asked what I was using to go from song to song... they were too busy dancing and having fun I guess. I was being paid well to begin with, but they wanted more time, and so they paid me more. I'm planning on more gigs, like that and I just need to be able to "control" what's up next ....that's all I'm gonna be needing. I may move to the SB3 just to have access to 4 channels though and keep the little numark as a backup. Thanks.
Hey Scott, I also use a numark party mix and i do rock some crazy sets with it (the place i play ocasionally have a 800 people maximum capacity, and it's normally at it's full). I'm planning on switching because i do feel a little "blocked" by some of this controllers limitations (lack of dedicated loop deck and effects knobs/panel), but you got the gist of it: it's not the equipment, it's how you use it and how you rock a crowd! If you and your crowd are happy with how you sound, that's just what you need :D

I remember we would also cover the song on the Vinyl so people will not know what I am playing lol. I can look back now and say that was cocky lol. It got to the point where I realized we can help one another (or like the saying goes share the wealth). We can all learn from each other and that my friend can expand our knowledge of the craft!! Plus opinions there are a dozen at every corner. We forget that we are offering a service and atleast try to be a bit humble so we can accomodate the onses who are paying us. As I stated very well said on this video!!!!

Exactly man! I started off on my phone using the free Djay app. From there moved to a sb2 using serato. At first I was pretty trash. And I wanted to be able to make smooth transitions, like I would on the Djay app.
After a while, I've gotten very confident using an sb2.
It doesn't matter what you use, it's how you use it!

Your video is on point! I couldn't agree with you more. I own a DDJ SX2 and DDJ SX3. There were many times I wish I had a "smaller" controller instead of hauling around a coffin with either of my SX controllers. I recently bought a SB3. It works out perfectly for bar gigs, small events, etc... where a full size, fully loaded controller isn't really needed. Bruh... it's not always about the gear, but it's always about how you use it... Excellent content!
Agree. I'm not bringing a super heavy expensive set up when I can bring a lightweight inexpensive controller instead. I can do almost everything anyone else can do with a cheap SB. yes I have tables, and a SX, but I find myself grabbing the SB because its light and cheap. If something was to go wrong in the DJ booth, just toss in the trash and grab another. DJs always have something to say, but I can do just about anything I want with a SB. They may be an intro unit, but they do a lot for such a small cheap product.
DJ CURRENSY I agree. Setting up my turntables consists of multiple trips to truck and lots of setup time. Hoping a new 2 channel controller hits the market with moving platters.

You've made remind myself that i've actually FORGOT this kind of thinking. I've started djing with a ddj sb 1 just for fun, 4 years ago, then i updgraded to a ddj sx2, replaced the windows laptop with a mac and started to get gigs, so i started to pursuit "the other djs respect" by mixing within every platform (vinyl, dvs, cdj, controller), then i bought a pair of plx 1000, now an allen & heath xone 43c mixer and an addon controller (pioneer xp1), and i still have plans to buy another entire setup (2 xdj 1000 mk2 and a djm 750mk2). I just forgot what i said to my friends, something like "rock that party no matter what setup do you use". I've rocked a lot of parties with a sb and an windows laptop, now i have a bunch of fancy, expensive and heavy cases/gear, hard to carry, hard to store, hard to mount/dismount... =/

When i started dj- ing, i only had a laptops. Doing rooftops and private and beach parties with it connected to an external mixer via AUX cables because o could afford a dj controller. And i did great. Now that i have a controller - hercules inpulse 500 - i dont see myself buying an premium one anytime soon because i love it and it works great for me !!!!

I guarantee you that if the technology today in 2019 was available back in the 90s those same DJs would be using it instead of bringing milk crates of vinyl, turntables and mixers.
Ryan J lol timecode on Nexus setups is one of my pet peeves. Don’t get me wrong, sometimes there are needs for it. But most times, they just don’t know how to setup HID mode.
Pri yon Joni I agree, why spend $6000 to just look cool and not know how to use the gear. Especially when your not even mixing. Crossfader left to right side? LOL
Couldn't agree more with this. Sometimes i trek it out pretty far into the woods for some renegades and its so much easier with a light controller.

Respect. Had to sell my mixtrack pro III a few months ago.. now looking to get back into it. This makes me feels way more comfortable about not having the space or money for a flagship..

The DDJ-400 is good too!
I started on a controller and moved to turntables. I still have my ddj-sr 2 but really prefer the moving platters but hate setting up my rig and balancing my tone arms etc etc. I’m really hoping Rane comes out with a 2 channel controller with moving platters or Numark down sizes the ns7 II because for a controller that big and heavy I’ll stick with my turntable set up.
watch out for the ddj-400...it's a rekordbox controller, so you're prepared for playing on Cdj's also when it comes to it...
I use my SB3 when I travel and it's awesome. I also own tables, cdj's and the Roland 505 and DDJ-SX3 but for traveling and smaller gigs the SB3 is perfect to travel with even on the plane.

This guy is amazing and very accurate. I started off on vinyl, then got into virtual dj and then serato on a borrowed NS6 controller. I saved up money to buy the NS7II, a monster of a controller and difficult to carry around especially when you add the weight of the odyssey flight case. That controller was my baby until it began to malfunction. That's when I purchased the ddjSB3 and my life changed forever. I seriously wish I discovered the sb3 before. The functionality rivals the high end controller and it's so light you can carry it in the case with 1 finger. He's right, people judge and pass remarks until I spin and rock the house. I love the before and after reaction.... Priceless!

I used to mix and scratch on numark axis 9s and always loved when someone mentioned how they didn't understand how I was doing that with the equipment I had. Best feeling in the world.

I'm getting back into dj-ing after many years, in fact the last time I dj-ed in a club. the standard gear was the Denon twin CD decks...Recently purchased a Denon MC4000 and am finding it a great way to reacquaint myself with playing music! Yes, one day I will upgrade to CDJ's and when I do I've already decided to keep my entry level controller, once again, Gratitude!

Great video! I was at a party once and the dj was using the Pioneer WeeGo and he turned the party OUUUUUTTT! So much so I took an interest in seeing this little controller and true it is nice to have something small to go with at times. You never know how things will be at a location. This was not at a club but a theatre event. Yes yes....props for the music and that is what matters most. In fact, I did not look down at him it made me more interested in his work and the controller. I was actually part of the tech crew and helping set up for the event that time instead of dj'ing. A DJ is a DJ bcuz anyone can call themself a DJ these days. There are many but the real DJs are few. So a professional DJ can use any equipment and rock the house. I remeber my buddy useto say its the Driver and not the car that wins the race.....Nice video Bro. 99% of the people on the floor could careless about your equipment as long as you are rocking the house. I do a weekly livestream at Ruff Start Radio. One time I was going to be out of town for my night, so I did a 2 hour recorded set on a Numark Dj2go2.
The owner of the station loved the set because my song selection was on point and my transitions were tight.
Thank you for this video. I learned on Gemini turntables, then learned cdjs on Numark. I got myself a pair of Gemini cdj 700s 3 years ago and still use them today. I got a small Pioneer controller that I use as well and yes, I get a lot of judgment by other djs. So I can relate to this video. Thanks again.

If I may offer a piece of advice that I wish I got as a beginner: Only listen or take advice from folks that have the results you are looking for and are practicing that advice. I used to make the mistake of listening to everybody about everything. But when you qualify the advice you are learning, it’s easier to wade out the bad advice. You don’t owe it to anyone to impress them. Do it because you love it despite what anyone else, including other DJs, think. Good luck!

This. I started on Gemini mixer and belt-drive decks. by the time i could afford tech12s, i knew wth i was doing already and knew how to take advantage of the better performance. kids who get given a $1000 guitar don't get better faster than a kid who bought a $200 squire with his own money. the latter person is motivated and will learn on anything.
