Ishida Katsuyoshi of the Ishida Biwa Shop in Tokyo performs authentic seiha Satsuma biwa and shows some of the stages in making a biwa. The song is part of “Shiroyama,” written by the Meiji statesman Katsu Kaishū on the heroic death of his close friend and fated enemy Saigō Takamori in the Satsuma Rebellion of 1877. One of the last surviving biwa makers in Japan, Ishida Katsuyoshi deserves the blessings of Benten-sama and the thanks of all Japan for bringing the Ishida Biwa-ten into the Reiwa Era/21st Century. He is also a performer of the first rank. Yahari Nihon biwagaku ni wa mada mirai ga aru. - Kyokureki
