Finally... a podcast for a WW2 MAD FANATIC like me. Thanks Lads.
Am a great admirer of both of you.
Ravi from London in Australia
And you need to go to their real podcast “We Have Ways of Making you Talk”. they do this weekly on their Patreon site (which has a pay wall). Addictive.
Excellent book. Informative and entertaining podcast. These two gel well. You can’t help thinking a evening down the pub with them would be fun.
James, it was really super to meet you in the Cult gig in Cardiff last night. Thank you for being so gracious!
Thank the lord this book is on my xmas wish list.
Every page I read I sweat. It's December here in blighty. Damn fine read sir.
Wonderful interview and fantastic presentation. Mr. Holland is magnificent, as always.
Excellent talk. Covered so much that I haven’t heard before.
hurriedly listening to this book whilst on holiday in sicily! my trip has now overtaken where I am in the book but loving it all nonetheless. sorry waterstones, i do buy your other books from you guys
I'm an air power guy, but this overview of the land war on Sicily was enjoyable.
Always obessesed w/WW2 since the 60s (when i grew up (if only)), I read rise & fall of the 3rd as a kid, watched W at War w/ sir Larry O narrating, and course History Ch in 80s & 90s, but the Internet & modern Historians have made it great. It's Brits who I trust for details. Course Germans are top notch, and Glantz, Citino, House, make an American proud. Sound quality a yank ear listening meant I missed a lot.
Sicily 43 is masterly
Surely the big issue with the Sicilian campaign is that with air and naval superiority once the allies had drawn a reasonable proportion of the available Axis forces to face them on the ground in Sicily the Straits of Messina should have been closed and forced the mass surrender of the trapped troops. Time and time again the allied strategy was to capture territory and not to encircle troops thus severely reducing the Axis ability to fight the next battle.
We get it about factories it’s generalship that counts too.
Shouldn’t they set out some of the basic narrative of what happens, a la Melvin Bragg’s ‘In Our Time’? Seems like they go to informed comment and discussion straight away. They’re an enjoyable combo to listen to but are assuming listeners have a similar level of understanding of the events as themselves.
Dudes: what is with the all the hotties throwing themselves at you in the comments section?!?! Is there something I’m missing? WW2 groupies?
I have read the book and it is a great book on Sicilian campaign .Keep up the good work.
What Canadian 🍁 units landed on the first day(s) of the Sicilian invasion in 1943? Did they operate independently, or were they integrated under the British command there? Who was actually in command of them? Lastly, how well did they fare in the overall Sicilian Campaign?
Slowed it to .75 speed... helps as an elderly utoob watcher w/ pair Brit WW2 histies jacked on E. Grey
Late to this party but it was a very interesting podcast. A bonus seems to be that I can pick from any number of porn bots in the comment section.
I grew up hearing family stories of what they experienced in WW2. (They lived in Italy, however not Sicily). After the Italians switched sides the Nazis made their presence known and not in a friendly way. The depredations visited on the villagers in my family's town were minor in comparison to what other populations suffered at the hands of the SS, Gestapo, etc. However my family is just one of tens of millions who suffered devastating effects from a worldwide war that should have never happened in the first place.
17.15 US aircraft in North Africa.
I would love to involve an exercise where you act as both Coy and Cdo Commanders for Operations into Europe in 1945. As a former RM Commando our role is often over sighted,
Why is James wearing his watch on the wrong hand?
Wow the landlord does have hair
I wonder why the Allies didn’t harass and bomb Messina as the Germans were retreating similarly to the Germans attacking dunkirk during the evacuation
