Interesting video. I'm kind of obsessed with it too despite never really having done it. I wish there were easy to access adult classes near me

    UCHIMURA KOHEI! 2:04
Best vault of all time, you're welcome.
FREAKING 2023 AND I STILL MISS HIM. Gymnastics is nothing today without him.

Another topic? What about pain and endurance in gymnastics. Going through the pain and keep going. Or to know when to stop?

P.S. luckily your obsession with the sport didn’t take away from your humorous, playful, sometimes enjoyably silly side!

    QUESTIONS:
what would your obsession be if it wasn’t gymnastics
how do you think your career would have been different if you were born in a “gymnastics country”
Do you think gymnasts who burn out don’t have an obsession or does the obsession become to much?

I'd like to hear you talk about various body shapes and how each is better suited to a particular apparatus, e.g., does having long legs help or hinder one's performance on the rings, horse, high bar, etc.. What would the ultimate all-rounder body type look like?

I'm a competitive swimmer and I would say I'm obsessed with swimming. I watch it, I analyse it, I watch swimming youtube (and spread out to other sports when I ran out, how I ended up here) and follow the world's best on social media. I analyse my races in fine detail, from splits, stroke rates, stroke counts I watch the videos of my races over and over all so that the next time I will be faster. I would say I'm more obsessed now than I was when I was younger. When I was in my early teens I was short tempered and stubborn so usually in training I would get annoyed at something and then not do the session properly, I also didn't like training it was a necessary evil, as I got older I almost had to teach myself to work hard again. Now I've learnt to train well and so my racing has improved and although I'm 21 I'm improving like a 13/14 year old. I've always been passionate though and I've always had big goals so I get so frustrated that people don't have the same dedication my brother and I have. I train 19.5 hours per week, 7 swim (6x5km + 1x10km), 1 gym, 1 dryland (body weight, ab work, stretching) and I coach 3 sessions per week. As I've gotten older I've learnt that true passion is rare I see it in the junior coaches in our club as well as the swimmers and it's so frustrating. I want to write and direct movies when I'm done with swimming but I'd definitely be happy with coaching if filmmaking doesn't work out because I love analysing swimming and finding ways to get faster.

I think that being obsessed with gymnastics has a lot of benefits and can be the source of a very happy life when gymnastics is going well. But I also think that it makes the lows very low - if you’re so emotionally connected to gymnastics, and then you fall at a comp or have a bad training session, it feels like your whole life has taken a big hit, since obsession creates such a narrow focus around gymnastics.

An obsession can be good in that it can get you the best that you can be like getting a gold in competition. However this can have a negative affect on everyday life with loved ones, friends and other healthy activities that take you away from being too caught up in the "obsession". There should be a balance and if not your physical, mental and emotional states can and will be affected.

i think to be world class in anything whether as an athlete or coach, you need to be a little bit obsessive about it! And a little crazy! I mean that in a good way! So not just gymnastics but to be the best in the world at anything. Keep on Keepin’ on! Love your videos!

From what I've seen from you I would say you are devoted and dedicated to gymnastics. I think if it was an obsession you would disregard everything else in your life. In previous videos you've worked on your house, enjoyed coffee in the morning while playing with your dog, and walked to training because you wanted to appreciate the natural beauty of wherever you happen to be. You have positive relationships with your friends and family. If you stopped doing these I would worry that you are becoming obsessed.

I think for most athletes that reach the real top, as you for, the obsession is what makes the difference. The trying-to-be-perfect is what you really makes stand out. I liked to hear the different opinions on it. Your trainer was correct saying that it is understandable that you are not into people who are not mad about the sport, but you also need to have a healthy mix in your surroundings, in your group of friends, to keep you "sane".

My thought: how to overcome mental blocks/the other mental health issues that come with the sport (eating disorders, depression, ocd, etc.)
Thank you for your videos and continue to be a light in the gymnastics world

Whoa, way heavy . . . there's a fellow just east across that strait named Adam Peaty. He's obsessed with one race: the hundred breaststroke. He has spoken lately of his obsession and the intense ambivalence wrought by it. There's a rather trite but nevertheless affecting poem by Housman, To an Athlete Dying Young. It contemplates the death of a young athelete as distinct from ones "whom renown outran and the name died before the man." There is a bittersweetness to knowing one day you will retire from sport still a young man. The awareness that life is about loss comes at a price for all of us.

My question: What do you define as "being fit"? e.g. being able to run a kilometer without blacking out or being able to run a marathon
and I know that obsession from unicycling, with the problem that every injury or sickness that stops me from training can trigger a depressive episode...

    Which apperatus is the easiest/hardest?
How to reduce the pressure on competition days?
Best to do after gettings scraps on your hand after highbar etc.?

To be at the highest level you need it to be an obsession to be your best. Looks like you take time off when needed and the videos are great.
Do you go visit gymnastics friends in other countries and see how they train? It would be great to see them visit train in the new gym with you

Before the last 2 years (prior to competing in the Olympics), since he's had Eamon & Adam around, he trained more on his own. He definitely shot some Vlogs visiting & training w/ some friends in Sweden & England that you can search for. The pandemic certainly complicated that too

Great video Rhys, obsession can mean a lot, with gymnastics for you I think it means passion, enthusiasm and infatuation, you said people have said you have natural talent of course you do, most people natural talent at something but not many have the obsession to become a world champion, well done my superstar nephew and you have been an inspiration for me to change my life around

Obsession with an individual sport is necessary. You are competing against other individuals who are also dedicate, concentrating and obsessed. If they are NOT, they do not put 100 percent into the sport and are pushed aside by the guy who is obsessed where nothing else is as important or detracts from his absolute concentration, strength, resolve and training to achieve the best he can be. By obsessed, Rhys, be the winner. You will always be better than those who do not care in their totality for this demanding sport, the most difficult of all.

  • @organbuilder272
    @organbuilder272 Рік тому

There is another question here Rhys. Is it OBSESSION or DEDICATION. Both suggest an unwavering participation in a sport or point of study. What separates the two is the knowledge that there are other things to do and think about. These distractions are used as Vacations but are not allowed to overcome the need for constant and consistent practice. Obsession is a mental attachment to a subject or activity that does not tolerate any distraction for any reason. The obsessor lives in a world which exists only in a particular subject or sport and there is no room for anything else. You like to travel, you like to do things other than Gymnastics. You recognize that there are other sports, hobbies or activities to occupy some time away from gymnastics - they let you recharge your batteries, to make a comparison. You are not obsessed rather than dedicated. It is the lack of the same dedication that left many of your early friends in this sport, dropping by the wayside as you progressed to becoming a champion on several levels. They might have been obsessed for a time, but they were not, unlike yourself, dedicated to the sport, training, gaining skills and recovering from injury, failure and the boredom that often invades the need for constant practice. You are not obsessed, Rhys, you are dedicated, devoted and enthusiastic about Gymnastics - which is why people not enthusiastic about this sport are of little interest - because they do not share your feelings, though they don't physically participate, or, maybe they do and are, unlike you, heading for the quitters box. Remain dedicated, Champion Rhys. There are greater prizes in your future.

I m definitely obsessed about gymnastics even though I m just a hobby gymnast who trains 2-3 times a week a couple of hours. But if I had the time, the resource and the body, i d spend every waking minute in a gym 😅 even when I was injured I had to go to the gym even though it hurt so much to watch the others train. Just to BE around gymnastics felt necessary

Not always the case. Look at the old Communist countries that took talented children, with the potential to became a star, away from their families, & put them in national training centers. They were mistreated & forced to compete. Some greatly resented the separation from their families. It's far less common these day, but plenty of documentaries on this subject.
