Yamato - Positioning Is Difficult

- With all the DD spam as of late, I figured I'd feature the mother of all BBs, the Yamato, as a change. This game is rather interesting because it displays how difficult it can sometimes be to find a position to both tank for the team and not just eat unnecessary damage. You can find my recommended build at the end as usual.

Anyone can tank damage and die in a BB, but tanking damage just for the sake of tanking is pointless, making sure the damage you eat actually benefits the team is significantly more difficult. This game in particular is interesting because it shows just how difficult it is for me to find an opportunity to actually do something meaningful with my HP pool. Also I think I called the yugumo a fletcher at one point, sorry about that.

Flamu sir, i know you made your point about why not to do a Best T10 BB vid cuz of the conqueror and etc. and so on, but could you try atleast? Im really frustrated to play my Yamato now, and its my only T10. I know there is no real cause conquerer but still :/

You shouldn't be using the 'spood beast' on the Fletcher. It is fast enough, and DefAA (especially with the recent buff) is great for defending against CVs, or swatting down a pesky spotter plane to preserve your stealth.
I'll take my Z52 any day.

I linked this video in my clan discord only to find out afterwards that another clan member was on the enemy team in a Mogami and got deleted by Flamu. This makes this video extra special. We won't let our clan member forget. Like ever.
Dude, thanks for the vid! Recently I just got my Yamato, and despite doing ok in it (60% WR and 122k dmg in average), I find it somewhat difficult to play, especially positioning-wise. The worst thing is, I try to get near the cap as you did here and support my DDs, but the problem is that half the time team abandons the cap, and I'm left stranded because I can't turn as there are usually 2-3 BBs just waiting for me to show that juicy citadel. What I do is usually reverse and just hope that there aren't any flanking DDs. What I'm trying to say is that team usually does not understand how to support Yamato or make room for it to kick off its potential and that encourages passive, camping style of play that I really hate.
In those rare occasions when I get really good team that supports me or the other BBs, wins are usually so one sided its laughable. Thanks for the tips & keep up the good work!
Goran Radosevic How do you aim in Yamato? I just got mine yesterday and Izumo was so easy with hardly any lead but Yamato I find always has pretty rough dispersion at the range I’m forced to play at. My instinct is to get to mid range but that results in toro deletion so I’m not sure how to handle it.

This thing is awesome with the priority target that Flamu mentions. I particularly love playing DDs. I can imagine the mind games you can play on enemy BB players. Switching from torps to guns on a specific target making him go crazy with panic that he is being torped and then without switching off torps you launch at another BB. Brilliant!
I use AA over Reload upgrade because I can't stand that traverse and it helps a little bit with planes, not that there are a lot of those but still.

Montana can kick Yamato’s ass at range. Fire HE, the Yam can only hope to just penetrate you. Any slight angle will defeat the Yamato’s guns.

This is very best type of video from you. 2 other great examples were BB as top Tier and BB as bottom Tier. Positioning, use of islands, predicting and faking out torp DD, using terrain to isolate enemies, and lots more to learn.

Flamu what do you think about changing concealment for basics of survavibility and to make yamato full tank?
Walking the fine line between sniping and tanking. A hard skill I'm still trying to master...my personal preference is still too much YOLO. :)

You are inteded to freeXP through it and then use tank build on GK
Free XP the FdG ?? She might have terrible dispersion, but with the Tank/AA Build i ve used on her she was a Fortress ! 4,7 Planes shot down in my Stats thx to manual AA.
Try to get close together with others and tank.
I have the GK for a while, but my pot dmg Record still is 5,3M with the FdG :)
I run aiming systems on my FDG, leaving me with a 9.6 km secondary range but those guns now sing. Aimed properly they deal a lot of damage even at distances over 15km.
Since the reduced damage and fire chance on german secondaries I prefer to rely on my main guns.
I run the same module also on Gneisenau and I find it very useful while Scharn, Bismarck, Tirpitz and Kurfurst are full secondary build.
hello. I am new to the yamato and it seems like the shell flight time is faster than the flight time indicator is saying. For example it seems if the flight time would be 10 second if I aim for that mark that the shells are landing in front of the target. No the target did not slow down.
After listening to this while playing for a few minutes, all I hear is "The Yamato isn't good at..." "The Yamato is the worst battleship at this" "The Yamato is really vulnerable to..."
After playing it for some time now, I've come to realize that it's basically giant guns strapped to 50,000 tons of firewood and torpedo bulges. Wish Wargaming would change them so they have more of a proper role. They need support at all times, get focused down, their AA is too close ranged to defend itself until it's already taken damage, it's rudder shift is glacial. You really don't have much choice in terms of strategy, you have to stay near team 90% of the time or you are absolutely screwed.

All these Comments about flamu sniping must be from em salty cruiser and DD Captains who think BB's should charge head first into everything and tank the entire team on one flank and then proceed to complain about them commiting suicide.
sometimes feel Flamu's shot always get a 100knot more velocity.or maybe ive accidentally open x0.25 video speed.
The most difficult part about me for Yamato is maneuvering into a good position to tank. I will shoot at DDs if I can get a good salvo off two minutes into a game, but at the start I usually try to force radar ships and capital ships to stop or retreat, preventing them from supporting their team

Great video. Flamu pretty summed up every single points to be a good Yamato player, which is what the most Yammy players are lacking.

i sometimes do that as well in any bbs. there are times when setting a fire is the best option. maybe no in the yamato tho, ap is so good.

Can we have DM Donskoi next please? I don't think you have covered it in a long long time, and I consider it one of the strongest T9 cruisers in the game.
I think German BB HE is okay ... for the one situation it´s meant to be used in ... on an angled enemy BB ... otherwise it´s pretty weak yes.
When I face angled BB I just aim higher with AP. Hopefully disable their guns too.
I do that too if i happen to have AP in the barrels. If i can que up the next volley though (seing enemy turning) i have at least 1 volley HE ready to go (hopefully get a fire) and when his turn is through i have the qued up AP for the next one ready again.

I want to snipe in yamato.. But the problem is everybody likes to follow my example.. Also I seem to get cyclones more then half the time.. Ship choices are sometimes handicapped by a random change of cyclones

I still think lowering the citadel on the Iowa and Montana was a mistake, they were fine before now its on par with the Conqueror in therm of BS. Tier 9 and 10 nothing has a citadel appart from Yammy
I still get citadels on broadside late tier US BBs tho, even in Amagi, I think their citadels are fine

Well, in fact you don't need premium spotter plane at all, because you can barely use 4 of them during a 20 min battle ... the only interest is the shorter cooldown but ...
I know it's not a lot of money.

Mirdwen at tier ten you might as well run all premy, spotter is still very useful
but your spotter plane can get shot down. then is nice to have one spare.
plus premium reduces the cooldown. i agree its not top priority tho
This boat is a good example of the ebb and flow of power in this game. She used to be the best BB in the game but with revisions and additions of other BBs that power has shifted a bit. Its likely that she will get some revisions in the future and perhaps once again rise to power. Many boats are like that in this game.
Mostly Japanese ones tbh. Less than a year ago Kongo was to many the best t5 BB, but now with Oktober and Cesare, she doesn't really come too close

Flamu, as you always refer to the priority target perk with its changeing count (torps to guns and vice versa) - you could do a commentary on how to abuse people that are running PT and are paying attention to it. I find it very useful to just not aim at them at all while not in torp view. So they will never know i am there and i aim at them or i sent my torps at their direction. Works good. Just a suggestion.
If you target them with torps it doesn't show in the PT count, only gun does. That's why when you go from 1 to 0 and there is a DD nearby you know torps are coming your way.

Royal Navy Syndrome...is a real thing. Except that IJN BBs do HE pretty well too. 9/10 when I play my Kongo in RB, I'm using HE to start off with. I would say only about 1/2 the players know how to deal with fires in the most efficient way, so using HE with IJN can end up working out well.
As a new player the tactic i use is identical to what i did when i started wot three years ago.. Always watch more time of videos with skilled players than actually playing the game. At least for the first months to get knowledge without finding it out the bad way :)

If he was ambushed by Kurfurst and have tried to turn - he would have been nuke by that Kurfurst, if he reversed he would be torped from A by Yugumo or would have been sniped by both Yamato or NC...

There are situations where using he with the yamato at another bb is a better than using AP. I play my Yamato in CW, and i had to fight GKs so many times and tho i had a lot of pens less than a half of them did avtually damage the ship this happens mostly when i'm far away from it but i don't have other targets to shoot at. So i just load HE which is f*cking strong on the yamato thanks to the high caliber and i burn the GKs for half of their hp till they can't even shoot back. :D

Typical NA matchmaking 5 DDs and BBs per side, and two sorry cruisers, especially those Mogamis, I mean the only way the mm would have been worse is if instead of the other cruiser there was a CV, and I bet the first ship the carriers would have deleted would have been the mogami.

Well he chose Vigilance over Basics of survivability... I guess that 10 second reduction in dmg control is not as good as having a better chance in detecting and dodging torps early.
Either way both are good options... you just have to pick either one.
Plus he chose Fire Prevention as opposed to not having Basics of Survivability by trading off AFT.

So basically, with Yamato it's better to sit further back in the beginning rather than move too far forward.
In the past it was the opposite... You rush in a Yamato with beast mode secondary build and wreak havoc to anything that even attempts to angle with your LOLPEN guns...
Then German and British Battleships came in with Citadel-proof armour and now American Battleships have their citadels lowered below water line too...
Indeed, I never experienced that because I got Yamato at the same time as the Iowa&Mont citadel lowering, but I remember the days when Yamato was considered the ultimate BB in the game, and people even talking about secondary build being viable. Then came the German BBs with Kurfurst and everyone was like "No way, a T10 BB that's a better brawler than Yamato?". It's a bit sad to see Yamato being somewhat pushed out of the meta, where adaptability and volume of fire means more than fewer but more powerful strikes. It's ironic that the negatively viewed "BB camping/sniping meta" (which I agree is rather boring) is actually the one that fits Yamato best. I guess I just have to accept the meta change, learn to play her despite the difficulty and keep looking for opportunities to use her strengths. She was one of the reasons I started playing this game after all.

Tbh I would argue the Yamato is a very bad solo random ship.
Something like Montana can perform substantially better and can offer better team play and can do more active things like brawl with cruisers and other BBs. Yamato can’t really do that.
