@@illbehonest The point is that he does not teach the work of the Holy Spirit in his talk. He attributes to our effort. Where does the fruit come from? This is characteristic of all Reformed teaching. Delimit the Holy Spirit in our lives because he has not had the baptism by Jesus.
I came from a pentecostal/charismatic background so I know where this is coming from. If you think that Geoff preaches that we serve God ONLY in our flesh you've obviously not listened to him. And if you think that he doesn't preach dependence on the Holy Spirit you're very mistaken.
@@johnnilan8240 I agree it's frustrating because of the contradictions. Ironically I have heard many people, from charismatics to Calvinists praying for the Holy Spirit to "fill us" and "come" etc but the Holy Spirit is either indwelling or not! Then, as he does here, they talk about the "power" of the Holy Spirit but give no indication of that power in the rest of their talk 🤷🏻♀️. I couldn't believe it when he said "we keep on sinning" when all of Romans 6, 1st John 3 thru 5 and John 8:34-36 say we do NOT! I only listen now and again to this channel because Tim Conway, unlike the majority of preachers, actually digs into 1st John and believes in what's written. Conway says, accurately, that we do NOT keep on sinning! Geoff says the opposite. And then, to top it all, he talks here about "secret shame". Whaaat??? That's all in the PAST, the "old man". Your life becomes 100% transparent when you're born again/born of the Spirit. You're the same person whether alone or in company. There are absolutely no "secrets". You have been HEALED, which in Greek means "made whole". NO MORE disjointed personalities (if people are in Christ). Sorry to say but sermons like this make the Resurrection power of the new life in Christ sound non-existent. And what is "good news" about living the same life as you did before you knew Christ?? Is that why he came, suffered, died and was risen?? No! It makes no sense. This is "Old Covenant Christianity", as one preacher put it. Obviously a contradiction but that's the point! Someone dead in sin, still in bondage to sin, filled with guilt and shame and unable to be a Christian WITNESS to the lost world (THAT'S the "proof!") does not, by definition, have Christ indwelling (2 Corinthians 13:5) through the Holy Spirit (John 14:16-17, Romans 8:9 etc). And JOY is part of the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23). The analogy of fruit was made deliberately by Jesus and Paul because the whole point is that it's there in the heart no matter the circumstances and is not dependent on circumstances or "reasons" 🤦🏻♀️.

That's what I see here and what I see waaaay too often from preachers. Like the man (a friend of a friend) who "preached" in a house group recently and prayed for "God to give us His Spirit" and "strengthen us" and "fill us with joy and peace and love!" I said "He HAS already if we're regenerate".. Then he said "yes, amen, thank-you Lord for the gift of the Holy Spirit and the fruit of the Spirit... Romans 15:13 -- Geoff finish the sentence -- by the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 8:9
If you listen to the first 20 seconds he does read the whole verse, but his version puts by the power of the Holy Spirit at the end of the text.
