It’s just a calling at this point, I remember buying my camera in December 2018 hoping to make UA-cam vids such a vlogs. Basketball IRL, Reactions, Gaming. Etc etc. one day I was at the park filming the homies hoop and a random guy asked did I shoot music videos. I replied no, but I had the urge to say yes. Fast forward a few months later I found myself in Texas helping a family member out with his hustle shooting videos around his town. Basically his right hand man sleeping in his studio. Now I’m in LA one year later with just a camera and laptop. I wanted to be the one in front, never in a million years I would think I’d be going down this path. Crazy how life just flip your world outside down and make you think outside the box to achieve your dreams.

Thanks everyone for watching! I hope this video gives you that little extra boost to take on your first music video set or gives you some tips and tricks for your next music video shoot!
I use tripods for studio recordings with multiple cameras to capture lots of b roll. It helps when you need to focus on solos and to cover performers' (or cameraman) mistakes. It makes syncing a breeze. Also grab stills of anything that has the band's logo or unique equipment.
I just acquired a Gh4 and I came here to get some confidence to gas me up to take up on my first gig. I really appreciate you. New sub from Nairobi, Kenya.
I just end a making 2pages of notes throughout this video... N really appreciate you man .. just in few days i m gonna film 1music video obviously for free😎😅😅.. but yes I'll let you know how its comes up.. one again thank you sooooooo much
Haha! Thats the best way to take in this content man. and nice work for booking in a music video! Comment again and let me know how it goes! Good luck with your shoot!
Great information! I will add for the blurred background effect, focal length and distance from subject make a huge difference as well. 200mm at f/4.0 or f/5.6 will look similar to 16mm at f/2.8 with a subject close to the camera. Just pointing out that the aperture is not the only factor Also, you said “DSLR recommendations” for all mirrorless cameras lol
If you do end up filming in a framerate that's too high for what you're going for, you can always reduce the framerate in your editing software. You can always remove frames but you can't add them back in if you do end up needing them.
Appreciate the love! It most definitely was like a free little masterclass haha. You should also take a peek at our new music video course we're releasing specifically tailored towards freelancers: www.learnfreelancefilmmaking.com/MVC-optin

I have very basic technical question, but I haven't found an definitive answer yet. Obviously you need to have one master recording of the song for good quality sound, correct? Now do you shoot performance scenes several times at different spots or locations and each time artists sing the whole song? Or do you just film first third at one spot/location, 2nd third at another etc? How do you synchronise that master audio to each of the performances? I don't expect that artists are so perfect that they will perform each time at exactly the same tempo? This is more prominent if you are shooting guitar of violin performance. Thanks for sharing you knowledge.
Hey! Yeah, so basically every single performance scene, no matter what, I make the artist sing the song from the very beginning, to the very end. In my editing program, what I do is create a 'multicam' clip. I highlight every performance scene in my editing program along with the mastered audio that the artist provides me with, and then I create the multi cam clip. The multi cam will auto sync all performance scenes along with the mastered audio of the song. I have an online music video course where I explain how to do this and so much more (so much more meaning there are over 140 video lessons in my course). If this interests you, you can check it out here! www.learnfreelancefilmmaking.ca/
I would try to switch it up between 24 and 60. It may look similar, but there is a very small difference. By switching your frame rates, this is what takes you to the next level as a filmmaker, trust me!

What do you think about adding photos to music video, I’ve seen it in some videos, like 3 fast photos on beat. You can see it in Ariana Grande’s ‘Positions’ music video. And if you've ever done it, you can do a tutorial.
Yooo ToniG! I have done this before, yes! Check out this music video we filmed a while ago: ua-cam.com/video/pEII4SVPVYo/v-deo.html.
When I edited this music video during the drop of the song, I actually took screen grabs from the music video Broll shots and used them as clips in the music video. I can make an editing tutorial on this! Great question!
Wow, very informative.
So I recently got a sigma 30 1.4 for my Sony a6300, do you think its a good lens for music videos? Thanks.
Thank you!
Yeah man 100%. The Sigma 30mm 1/4 is not only a great low light lens but because its a prime, you'll get solid sharp 4k footage
Im bout to get into this💎
Get itttt! We're rooting for ya!
This video was very educational and entertaining. It highlighted so many of the mistakes I've already made. Thanks! I appreciate this.
