This is no short of a university lecture...
I congratulate you and thank you for this wonderful presentation. May your words on the restoration be heard by those in charge.
Wow, to do that all in the time since the fire!
At first I had planned to do it in one week... But I have been working hard on my house, so many things had to wait.
Incredible work Matthias!! Well done. Will watch this more than once. Better than anything produced on this subject commercially!
Such a great channel.
Jim
Wow, despite the depth of the loss, how fortunate we viewers are to have you put together this documentation;, thank you, sir!
Absolutely fascinating and beautifully produced - thanks for making time in your busy schedule to put this together. I'm looking forward to the release of the two hour long "Director's Cut".
I hope you can still find time to make more videos - always informative and a delight to watch and listen - thanks again.
Many thanks Matthias great video, very interesting with some great photography. Your explanation as always was spot on, my family have been carpenters for 200 years and can only imagine how hardwhat people worked back then but what wonderful things they built regards John
What an amazing analysis. I enjoy all of your videos but this one left me in awe. Thank you for your time, effort and thought.
This is a brilliant treatise to Notre-Dame de Paris! I have enjoyed your videos for some time, and the thoroughness and thoughtfulness you share is fantastic. Thank-you, sir!
Huge thanks for showing a very interesting part of the building that only few people could see, and now is lost. It also shows how much was lost in "just the roof".
A superb and definitive Video that makes clear the extent of what was there, and what was tragically lost. It could have been a so much worse had the vaults collapsed (which thankfully they didn't)
Thank you Matthias
amazing video, Matthias! very educational!
As always a fascinating and informed analysis. Thank you Matthias.
It was a really good work this building. I think that Notre Dame, it´s amazing, because of the details and the way the arches are located, I think they give it a majestic view, somewhat impressive for it's greatness.
I'm happy because they are rebuilding this beautiful cathedral.
I am currently studying an architecture degree at ITCH II, in Mexico, and without a doubt your video helped me to analyze this building in more detail.
Thank you very much for the video.
Wow! What a documentary! I enjoyed every minute. A true privilege to watch. Hope to see more from you. Also something from your workshop again 🙂
Thanks so much for your work, Matthias, your videos inspire me a lot to get started with carpentry!
Wholesomeness lives in You /through You Matthias Burger. Thank you for your labour and time.
Einfach so viele Details.
Amazing information, I am from Chihuahua Mexico, student of the Technological Institute of Chihuahua II and I congratulate you, for your work. Help me a lot as an architecture student👏🏼
Very Enjoyable watch! thanks
To think that all that beautiful wood work was "seat of your pants" engineering, based on centuries of experience, held tight by Carpenter's Guilds. I am amazed that there is enough such knowledge left to rebuild it. All the world knows about it now, because of the fire, that wouldn't have had a clue otherwise. Thank you for the detailed drawings and explanations, like I have never seen before.
Thank you Matthias that was very interesting. It really is a shame it was so badly damaged.I guess there will be a huge rebuild in the near future.it will take a large force of timber framers a while to repair.
Excellent information helped me understand better about Notre Dame, I am from Chihuahua Mexico, a student at ITCH II
This deserves more views then it's getting so far.
Congratulations on the video. It's very interesting. Greetings from ITCH II from Chihuahua, Mexico.
Wonderful video! Do you think they will rebuild using steel or try wood again? I know originality counts but yikes!
9:48 So, basically the Eiffel tower was a large iron replica of the spire of Notre-Dame. Interesting!
Very nice video! Thank you for the English version!
I'm an studen from México and I think this video is amazing, greetings from ITCH II
Congratulations, I am an architecture student and watching this is very interesting, thank you for doing it. Greetings from Chihuahua México. Tec II
Wow. Very impressive, plus in two languages!
Thank you for bringing to us this important information, it's a big infrastructure and need a lot of explanation to understand ho hard it was for the engineers to build this artwork.
Greetings from Chihuahua, Chihuahua México. Tecnologico de Chihuahua II. Arquitectura.
Congratulations Matthias that type of of analising help me for my carrer of arquitecture im student in tec II in Mexico, Chihuahua thank you for the video ...saludos.
Congratulations, it's a great work, thanks for the informative video, I'm an architecture student at ITCH II and helped me a lot for my classe, greetings from Chihuahua, México.
Totally recognized #7 from the book Cathedral by David Macaulay.
Very exhaustively researched, with wonderful illustrations as always.
Some parts of the narration are difficult to follow and it would be helpful if you uploaded captions based on your script. If you work from the auto-generated captions, the timestamps will already be in place.
I am an architecture student at Tec II in Chihuahua, Mexico. Congratulations, the documentary is very interesting.
Congratulations, this video was very useful for my critical analysis subject in the architecture degree. Greetings from ITCH II
Thanks that was cool. Have you done a world trade center analysis?
Amazing video, congratulations! I´m study architecture in Tec II in Mexico and this video help me a lot of for my class " Análisis Critico".
Excellent information, greetings from the Chihuahua Institute of Technology !!!!! From the subject of Critical Analysis of Architecture

absolutely fantastic video. Thank you for your effort bringing this insight and instruction.
Interesting vídeo, fascinating architecture, currently studying architecture at ITCHII , greetings and thanks
Great video, very well explained and researched!
Ausgezeichnet. Danke für deine Arbeit 😁
Fantastic education. Thank you
It was an unsettling day watching the fire spread in real time from NZ. My first thought was "bloody contractors" being careless and not respecting the extreme fire hazard presented by the attic.
In my humble opinion, those who constructed this cathedral had the easy part. We have the difficult task of restoring the Notre Dame de Paris. Can we succeed? We can try. Thank you for this engrossing video.
Fascinating, thank you Alan
Thank you Matthias 👌👍
26:00 I wouldn't put that failure on the mortar. Between the rapid heating from the fire, and rapid cooling with water, it is very likely that stress cracks were created in the stone. Also noteworthy is the fact that the stones would have been unevenly heated, with the center being cooler than the surface, further weakening the stones.
amazing information about arquitecture of notre dame
Thank you for this very good information!
Super robota bardzo dziękuję
Thank you for sharing.
Thank you.
If it cannot be rebuilt in part due to weakened structures, then build a brand new exact replica from the ground up, with latest structural technologies and materials, incorporating salvage materials if possible.
When I see presentations like this and see the drawings of the original construction I often wonder how much cursing went on from the tradesmen about the designers and how it "should" be done, because I know it goes on even today. When I saw the drawing of the wall construction it was a wonder it stood on its own with no apparent support, which was added later. You can see from the drawings why the flying buttresses were necessary.
The problem with any old building is the absolutely dry wood, even today when old buildings are renovated the lathe and plaster walls are usually removed and the wood used for fire kindling.
Just a weird French note about these old buildings. When you go into very old buildings the attics have a particular odour from the accumulated dust. I was at a function in Colmar and I discovered 7yr old Chartreuse, I took one sniff of it and passed it to my friend who recognised the smell but couldn't put his finger on it, old attics! So, I bought the 5 yr old as I could never get past the smell of the 7 yr old.
Excelente video, muy interesante y educativo!
Thank you for the informative video on the timber frame construction. If rebuilt will need to use 'modern' steel frame, too large and complicated structure, too few skilled timber framers, too little raw materials. Unless of course a modern timber frame manufacturer with computer driven joinery cutting equipment would re-tool for a huge 'custom' timber job.
Timbers MOVE over the years/centuries. and, they burn. perhaps like god intended.
Woow, sorprendente información de Notre-Dame
How did it catch fire?
Muy buen video, Daniela salcido del tec 2
Very nice video!
I would hope that the person who decided the first smoke alarm was a false one, has realised the error of their ways.
Buen video 🤩
Excellent!
How does this simple construction validate the construction similar to the cost of a nuclear powered submarine.
Reconstruction and restauration is har and time consuming job, that needs to be made from scratch, by masters who have certain skill no one other has nowdays, so they need to be payed good, and no compromises and cost cuttings can be made, especially when construction is already is quite an expensive process, so the costs are so high
Still haven’t heard a definitive answer to how the fire started.
@DefinitelyNotDan don't believe everything you hear on Fox news. www.snopes.com/fact-check/france-covered-up-bataclan-victims/
Buen videos👍
Thank you
Where are you?
@@BarniRepairs Oh. Sorry, I misunderstood...
Having moved to a not perfectly finished house, I am a bit behind with making videos.
.. meanwhile Macron "assuming the lyre-player's garb, sang the 'Capture of Troy' " from the Élysée. (Cassio Dio, Roman History, Epitome of Book LXII)
What a tragedy
Thank you Macron!
Guten Tag!

Excelente. Saludos desde Bolivia.
An unusual long video, I know. And with many details which might be irrelevant. But there were so many interesting aspects, so I couldn't make it shorter.
I'm totally cool with long, well-thought-out videos.
I was hoping you'd do a video like this.
Any chance you'll ever do a video on Wealden-style hall houses?
@@timwrigley102 That would be a great matter. But I will have to come to England for some research. My wife would love that, so: maybe...
