I cry every time I hear it. Layne was a talent that will never be replicated. His and Jerry's song writing has helped me a lot in life

Alice in Chains is one of my favorites. HIs voice is amazing. Especially when you consider during that performance he was in the middle of heroin addiction and not taking care of himself well. You should check out Nutshell from that same Unplugged and also Love Hate Love live at the Moore.

Often as overdriven as it could be soft and soulful, Layne Staley's voice stretched from the middle of the 2nd octave high up into the 5th with seeming ease and endless power. Rest in Power for Eternity Layne, and thank you for every beautiful gift of song you blessed us all with.
Alice In Chains album Facelift was one of the first albums I ever owned. Their album Dirt is where I think they really found their unique sound. I suggest "Would" , "Rain When I Die" or "Rooster" as top three candidates for reactions and just pure listening pleasure. Peace/JT

I lost my son to narcotics and I can feel the truth in his voice, he’s down in a hole and losing his soul. My heartbreaks for him, AIC, and his family most of all.

next AIC song you should do is "Love Hate Love" live at the Moore. His voice was so powerful and emotive that all his songs are special.
The studio version is just as incredible. The electric guitar gives it a different feeling

This was one of his last performances. If you watched it live( was a young child when this performance was live) and some videos. Cantrell stops and asks Layne if he's alright after the song. This whole performance throughout the whole unplugged is just as haunting today as it was then. You can almost feel Layne knows he is losing the battle. Especially with this song. And I think it may have been three weeks, or three months after the unplugged that he passed.
The studio versions sucks honestly. Can hardly hear layne sing. This is so much better.

"Nutshell" is the other gem from the same show (MTV Unplugged), especially knowing Layne's tragic fate. It's short, but sweet.

I love this group man I'm soo missing Layne Thomas Staley Born: August 22, 1967, Kirkland, WA Died: April 5, 2002, Seattle, WA RIP Bro.
layne was a very complicated guy. very talented, while also very much suffering from a demon on his back. he was , in the last stretch / years of his life mainly a hermit and would play video games and use the money he earned from AIC to fund his debilitating opiate (mainly heroin) and crack cocaine addiction. i myself was an IV opiate addict and i know the hopelessness that comes along with it. ive always felt so sorry for lane that he could never find something or that someone who could bring him out of that hole. he really was 'down in a hole'' sad...he was so inclusive and lived such a lonely life near the end that his body wasnt found for 2 weeks, and i will not go into the details of what they found...as im sure the mental picture will suffice..... rest in peace Layne. PS: i only know all of this because my father was a close friend to Mike, the bassist who passed away from opiate addiction in the early 2000s. alot of sadness and darkness in the lifes of the band memebers in AIC. atleast hes not down in a hole anymore, or ever again. rest easy layne, Mike and most of all you too Dad. thank you for teaching me so much. i love you.
it's so hard to watch this performance. Layne was so sick with his addiction during this time.....but he still has that voice.
i cry when i see him toothless and nodding out while in his prime. its so sad to watch. but still he was SO damn talented. you HAVE to be talented out your ass to be that amazing while battling an IV heroin addiction that will ultimately take you one day. the last picture of layne, at a birthday party for a friend of his, is so sad to see. he looked NOTHING like the layne we all loved and knew from Alice. rip.

Layne's vocals were so hauntingly good in this song. However, gotta give props to Jerry for doing some of the heavy lifting in the harmonies, knowing Layne isn't feeling super well. Love this song and performance.

This song is a love song from guitarist Jerry Cantrell to the love of his life Courtney Clarke. Early pressings listed this as the 12th track in the album. Later pressings listed this as the 4th track supposedly to fit better with the band’s desire to have the album loosely tell a story from song to song.
Songwriter and guitarist Jerry Cantrell said of the song in the Music Bank box set liner notes, “Down in a Hole’s in my top three, personally. It’s to my long-time love. It’s the reality of my life, the path I’ve chosen and in a weird way it kind of foretold where we are right now. It’s hard for us to both understand…that this life is not conducive to much success with long-term relationships."
Once Layne got his voice where he wanted it, it stayed there with little effort. He was always better live than studio version. Layne's vocal range can run rings around any other grunge singer in my opinion. Layne could sing the phone book and never hit a wrong note. Even at the end of his life, with no teeth and a lisp, his voice, wit and humor were all still there. Layne's voice and vocal range was so powerful he did NOT need auto tune or pro-tools until he lost his teeth and had a lisp around 1998, and even then he still killed the vocals.
Barrett Martin (who played with Layne in Mad Season) said that when he stood to the side of the stage, he could hear the sound of Layne's vocal resonance come out of Layne's body LOUDER than it did coming out of the speakers, Layne's voice was that powerful.
Layne's story is more tragic and haunting because you can actually watch and hear him deteriorate over the 12 year span: from the mild use of drugs in 1990 all the way through 1996 when he was deep into a heroin addiction to dropping to 90 pounds by 1998 to 86 pounds when he died in 2002.
Layne was so much more than his drug addiction. He was able to come up with lyrics and harmonies off the top of his head. He knew enough to know that Jerry Cantrell was playing with the wrong people and gave him contact info for Sean Kinney and Mike Starr. He wrote the lyrics for the songs he sang on Mad Season's Above album and drew the cover art for that album. Layne was a genius in his own right. He still was able to figure things out in a snap off the top of his head. Layne just had his demons.
With MTV Unplugged, when Layne finally gave the Okay to do it. They were supposed to rehearse in Seattle but NO one showed up. Sean, Mike and Jerry would show up at different times but Layne would be MIA or Layne would show up for one or two songs and then leave. When they finally got to New York, Sean and Mike had an argument with Jerry because they thought with Layne's condition and addiction, he wouldn't be able to hit the high notes. Jerry was the ONLY ONE who was confident that Layne could do it. When you watch DOWN IN A HOLE Unplugged, and Layne hits that high note, you see Jerry look over at Sean and Mike with this "I TOLD YOU SO!" smirk. Layne did it again on ROOSTER Unplugged and Jerry did that same smirk.
The Unplugged show in 1996 is so heartbreaking to watch because Layne was deep in his heroin addiction (and yes, I know he was doing other drugs on top of Heroin). His liver was damaged and he knew it. He was just high enough to do the show to fight off withdrawal symptoms and he didn't get dope sick. He was such a ghost of himself during Unplugged. (Of course, Jerry had food poisoning) All Jerry saw when he looked over at Layne was his best friend was going to die soon due to the path Layne had chosen for his life. That show was filmed in April, 1996, premiered in May 1996. They did four shows with KISS in June-July 1996, after which Layne survived an overdose and became a recluse. After that, it was a six-year-long slow suicide.
MTV (and the music industry) has more or less blackballed Layne (and yet, they laud over Kurt Cobain every April 5th, because Kurt was the "face of grunge", meanwhile Layne gets a "by the way"). The Grammys went so far as to invite Jerry, Mike and Sean to the Grammy show in 2003 and then refused to put Layne's picture up in the memorial of the musicians who died in 2002. (Or they "forgot" to) which pissed Jerry, Mike and Sean off and they walked out on the show.
The friendship between Jerry and Layne was unbreakable. Jerry NEVER once thought of replacing Layne as the singer while Layne was still alive. He always wanted Layne to sing whenever he had AIC do something. If there were ever cosmic soulmates ... Layne and Jerry would be it. (And by that I mean, they were Sympatico with each other. The way they sang together was a perfect pitch where two voices make one. What you hear and see between Jerry and Layne was a genuine friendship. They looked after each other. When one had problems with a song, the other picked up the slack. They were a team.
Jerry was doing a solo concert in Charlotte, NC when he heard that Layne was found two weeks after he died and Jerry was trying to get through the concert and crying. He did shows between the time he found out about Layne until Layne's funeral because if he had taken a break then, he didn't think he'd want to continue anything later after the mourning period.
Alice In Chains was a band, but they were also a family. They had internal issues just like any family. When Layne died, it was like losing a loved one, a family member, you don't think of the fights you had with the person who died. You defend their memory. There is a reason Jerry wrote NO EXCUSES about Layne and the line "You, my friend, I will defend / And if we change, well, I'll love you anyway."

This song and its lyrics "i give this part of me to you" is what gave us the music needed for those of us who've survived what was the coming storm. Literally lost his life, apart of their band (prophetic) but in a sense gave his life. By putting himself out there with such major issues. Im talking about the opioid epidemic that's almost destroyed our communities and generation. Im a very blesses individual but have lost so many friends. But we're changing things, slowly but moat definitely. If anyone's fighting through this struggle seek help it is brighter on the other side. You can beat it I have!!!

Everytime i listen to it, the more i agree with some random comment which said " It is like hearing someone to sing at his on funeral. " RIP Layne.. you shone like a star, you sang like an angel.. and you went like a candle indle in the wind, yet you left a legacy which will live on.

As a kid of the 80s / 90s in the US... just wanna say thank you for keeping AIC and Layne Staley alive. Dirt is probably the heaviest / darkest, most raw / honest... and just flat out best albums of not just the grunge era... but all time. Music is pure energy that transcends politics, religion, race... and most importantly... time. This album can be hard to listen to for me b/c I've also struggled with mental darkness and I lost friends to drugs during that period... but I've learned to respect the darkness and embrace the light. Much love and respect my sister. @hvybalance
This was a barely present Lane Staley at 20% high as a kite, and the fact he was still able to sing this well while being so high is a marvel in of itself. If you want to have your mind blown check out 'Love Hate Love' live at The Moore when he was in much better shape....absolutely incredible singing there where he does a couple things that shouldn't be possible! One of the greatest rock singers of all time, arguably the greatest. RIP Layne 💔
There is a lot of controversy regarding this performance, as well as the Nirvana performance on MTV unplugged. Let's just say Layne was not 100% there but he still delivered.
fkn so sad Layne died c drugs... so many good ppl have died and just makes me mad and sad... some of the greatest talents have gotten caught up with either drugs or pressure in their industry. People need to first focus on being happy and at peace, then family maybe God if thats ur thing and last job & money. Unfortunately in US and maybe other countries, job & money rule our lives. Took me a while but i chose about 5 yrs ago to give up my career that paid over $150k a year after working about 15yrs... now make maybe $40-50k a year working independently but no stress and feel very happy and relaxed also more creative where i think i will get back to my career income but in somehting i will enjoy doing. More people need to reevaluate their lives - prioritize and do it early. In western countries they call it mid life crisis - but to me its more like reevaluating what r u doing - does it make u happy - if not change now. Around 40yrs of age is best to change if u need to. Money is not everything - being happy more imp. We as humans weren't menat to work 40hrs a week being bossed around and pressured, and only get 2-3 week vacation per year - thats modern day slavery. Choose peace/freedom/happiness over money and material possessions!!!!
This was shortly before Layne's death. Jerry Cantrell IS alice in chains. Everything is because of Jerry Cantrell. Layne was the greatest lead singer, but Jerry is the mind behind it all.

Layne was high on heroin when he did this concert. He had to in order to perform. He was literally down in a deep hole at this point. This was his next to last concert with them from what I understand. He then became a recluse and eventually overdosed.
