Ganguly was without doubt the greatest captain amongst all four who led to overseas victory in test and odi. He has all the ingradients of a great captain. Kapildev won the wc 1983 with the help of many all rounders, captains inning against Zimbabwe by himself and poor play by WI in final. Ganguly lost against a mighty team of Australia who won 3 WC and many test. Dhoni had the advantages of poor opponents. Dhoni is best keeper, useful batsman and tricky captain. Ganguly was far better captain, great batsman and useful bowler than Dhoni.

Kids of this generation criticize Ganguly for WC 2003 defeat and also for not winning any ICC trophy.(Yes he is the joint winner of Champions trophy). But what they don't know is Ganguly is the one who built the team which reached the Final of WC 2003. It is not easy to take a team to this level which was so ruined and confidence less. Before his arrival, India was playing for draw in overseas tests. But Dada is the one who taught the team that they should play for the win. While in this effort, even if u loose, that is also fine. This attitude has raised the Indian team.
Raising a average team to the champion level is not easy. We have seen many captains who were failed in doing so. Respect dada. Understand his role.
Where as Dhoni is the one who took it in to another height. Even this is also not easy. If India didn't had MSD, the history might be different. We have also seen some captains other than Dada and MSD who failed in doing so.

All 4 are great captains, role models, stood from the front, led by examples. But Kapil and MS had something that Ganguly and Kohli didnt. That is taking decisions on the spot to turn the match in our favour. Few call it luck, few call it masterstrokes, few call them genius. Those split second decisions were the ones which won us 3 world cups. Dada could have had a world cup had he batted in 2003 WC final.
Best captain for me will always be Kapil Dev only because i saw him first. Maybe a tie between Kapil and MSD. Kohli and Ganguly maybe a micrometre below but for me they were the best unlucky captains. Great collection

Motivate the team for win.
Make or push the selectors for a compact team.
Lead from the front.
Tactical mastery over opponent.
Win the faith of team men.
To me, Ganguly was a true leader and great batsman because team men have great faith on him and changed the attitude of team though Dhoni a best keeper and useful Batman was tactically very sound and used the resources very well whereas Kapildev, a great alrounder showed us leading from the front . Kohli is great batsman with never say die approach. They all have contributed their best.

The kind of cricket played during Kapil's era is in no way comparable to the present day.. at least Saurav's era can be a compared a little. Back then there was not many international games / series played like now, there was nothing known as a home ground advantage because almost everything was played outside of India in unknown pitch and field conditions. India has always been very much of a batting side and less dependent on it's bowlers, so invariably due to the unpredictable international conditions batsmen would more often fail to perform, and bowlers only did the least they could, which is the main reason India kept producing only Batsmen for a long time even during the Azharuddin, Sachin & Saurav's period as captains. And to take into account the type of other team's bowlers during Kapil's era in their own home, then Kapil's captaincy have to be listed out as a separate comparison..maybe with other country's captains from the same era.
Ganguly sowed the seeds of success and tended d garden immaculately. Dhoni reaped d crops and kohli is continuing d tradition well. It's Ganguly who taught how to win outside subcontinent under his wise captaincy.
